Badger Yeh your right, usually what tends to happen is that I do the line drawing but then I dont have enough time to render anything, however now since Ive purchased some softer pencily things I can cover surfaces much quicker its really fun too.

    BlackGuy Cheers danny!

Tiny uppy. These two were sort of an experiment with some new pencils.
Ive been trying to get the effect of a slimey/shiny surface but its been abit tricky. Do I need a more extreme contrast?

nice update. i love the character of the last one. as for slimey textures definetly push the contrast but also try and smoothen out your lines, your sketch feel is giving it a rough texture (which is really cool though!) also most importantly i think is the extreme highlights, esp when working w pencil you have to keep brining those out w your eraser. if not guoache or whatever medium you are working with.

hey, nice creatures, but yeah atm the texture is looking a bit dull, not slimy, like you said, i think you do need some more extreme contrast, shiny objects have more solid highlights -

    Thought I should post somat
I have a couple of pieces from my Final Major that still need posting, however I dont think I get them back till october or somat ridiculous which totally sucks balls. Btw thanks for the help everyone with the hydra, the final piece still wasnt quite shiny enough but I had a much better understanding than before.

Alot of my stuff at the moment hasnt been worth posting up, its just been anatomy studies really. I should post them up though I suppose.
My goal this summer holiday is to refine myself before university. Ive made myself a timetable which I shall try to stick to. This timetable is mostly based on improving my figures and character designs. Here it is so far, please feel free to slip in some ideas. It is still rough and I havent fully tested it out yet.

    Obsy 2 hours
Anatomy (Anatomy for the artist) 1 hour
    Clothing 1 hour
Anatomy (Anatomy for the Artist) 1 hour
    Gestures 1 hour
    Character design 1 hour.

Anyway somat to post, here is a pair of my dads goggles. Having mirrored this bastard and stuck it on here ive started to noticed quite a few errors. The goggle eye thing on the right has some screwed up perspective. I really need to work on my textures as well still.

    2 hours ish

    Uppy

Ok first of all Id like to apologise for the crappy photos, I couldnt turn the flash off my cam and my pc monitors gamma is fooked so I could only judge if the image was too bright or too dark and unfortunatley the possibilitie of an A4 scanner scanning an A2 pad is highly unlikley hehe. Alot of the anatomy studies are simple sketches just to understand the structure etc so the qualitie isnt too great either.

I have been doing atleast 2 hours of observational drawing daily starting in the morning and then the rest of the day is pretty much anatomy studies and gestures (posemaniacs). Ive also managed to get my hands on Bridgemans complete drawing from life bookie from the lib, so hopefully this should improve my figurative work.

I think this is pretty much it.

Wow, look at all the sketches. If I sketched as much as you I might actually be getting somewhere, like you seem to be. I really like all of the goggles sketches. They are really solid. The anatomy and figure sketches are just plain fun to look at.

VampireHungerStrike Thanks vampy! I feel like im sloooowly improving.. still need to draw more though

    yanino Thankies!

Pistol Good to see you pop by mate. The sheets are A2 I think, pretty big. Im not used to working on a large scale but it really gives you alot of freedom, your less caged in and it gives you more arm control.

Small uppy, mostly Obsy stuff. Im trying to neaten up my shading, but my hand isnt having it...*sigh*

page 1) Outside table with cloth and cuddley cow.
page 2) Half reference half doodle.
page 3) Skull with bog roll around it (didnt want clean material on my dirty skull lol) Abit of a texture experiment.

I think I might see if I can post an obsy drawing each day, seems to be set into my routine now. Well see how long I keep this up...

My trainer, seems a little too light as it is actually black. I might come back to this one another time I think. The rendering still looks shoddy!

If you happen to crit please feel free to rip the shit into me. Learning is brutal but fun!

    Good progression throughout the sketchbook!
My favorites are the stuffed cow and the skull.
Definitely work on some line exercises though, you don't seem to have a lot of line weight in your sketches. Overall its great to see someone with so many sketches from life with determination in getting better at anatomy!

ChaoticKnight Thanks for the encouragement! Weight of lines is certainly something that is bafflng me abit latley. You see recently im trying not to use too much line to define a shape, however in some of my sketches I feel like I need to sneak in certain lines to bring out the image, but I try not to if that makes sense. Do you know of any artists that show alot of this wieghted line control that I could perhaps take a peek at?
    Thanks for the advice!

Brush and a nectareen (spelling) a peachy fruit anyway.

Not best pleased with these really, I think I could have brought out the highlights of the shiny brush on white paper more easily, however perhaps I just need more contrast (again..), darker midtones, darks and also a darker background. Its so hard getting a balance sometimes.

One thing I have been dying to get my hands on and experiment with is a brown sketchbook. Using the brown of the paper as a midtone and then adding highlights with a white chalk or similar medium. Where I find such a book is a pretty hard task, no where near me sells anything like it and the internet is abit vague.
Im gonna have to ask around.

Might post some Anatomy stuff up later.

    Thanks

    Rich.

Hey there! Long time no chat

holy poo, Mr Man! That's a lotta figures The first page is great, but in the subsequent pages, it looks like your hand got tired, or you looked less at reference... the anatomy isn't quite as good. (I noticed some HUGE bubble butts... lol ) You have improved from the last time I checked in on this sb, tho. You should do a full page of hands and/or feet next. It helped me a ton!

    Keep on posting!

BohemianChaos Ah hey Janae! Man it has been a while hasnt it hehe. You know I thought your idea of drawing feet was great so I had a little play around drawing my dads/mums and my feet, Gotta do some more hands next

The paper I used for the inks was pretty shitty and It hardly absorbed any of the ink... Its as if it didnt want me to draw on it. That is the problem with cheap paper from college, it sucks. I feel so guilty wasting a book though so I gotta use it.

    Stuff...

holy shit man, so many studies! no comments on them, just watch on some of your sketches that you don't do an outline around the whole object.

hp Cheers hp, I'm gonna have to wrap my head around this line lark sooner or later

Small uppy, just some characters doodles. I really should tighten up the rendering on the last image....

My next step of study is heads and faces, I absolutely suck at them! I'm also considering getting a larger sketchbook.

Dammit, Mr. Man, it's been way too long. I'm seeing a freaking huuuuge improvement since the last time I visited this sketchbook. Jeepers creepers, you've noticeably improved between your last two posts! You've got dedication, and it shows. Your concepts are more exciting, your pencil technique is much more subtle and sensitive to form, and your knowledge of anatomy has improved by leaps and bounds. Rock on, Mr. Man!

Moai Hey bro its great to here from you! It has been a while hasn't it I'm gonna have to sneak into your sketchbook asap!
I really appreciate the comments, It feels to good know I'm on the right path. I have to admit though that I have been slacking a bit lately. Once I slip out the groove its hard to slip back into it sometimes.
Thanks again for the comments matey, really appreciate it!!!

Today has been a tin study. It was actually supposed to be a simple forms study such as Spheres cones and cubes, but a tin was the closest thing I could find to a cylinder.

    My ellipse's suck ass!

Hey again, Mr. Man. Sweet update, once again. I'm not sure what to tell you about those ellipses. I don't really know the correct technique for those.
Anyway, some good animal books are How to Draw Animals (what a generic name) by Jack Hamm, and The Weatherly Guide to Drawing Animals by Joe Weatherly. They both have their strong points. I wouldn't necessarily recommend one of those big "Atlas of Animal Anatomy" books, because they're about as fitting for artists as a human biology textbook. They have incredible detail, but it's really more information that you need, and it's not laid out in a fashion particularly suited for artists.
    Hope that helped.
