    What videocard is everyone using?

Hey everyone. I was just wondering what videocard everyone is using? Currently I'm using an ATI Radeon 9600xt (256 mb model) and it's time to put the old thing out to pasture. Too slow for many modern games (unless the games video settings are relatively low) and if I try to paint digitally with a high resolution canvas it takes a second or two for the stroke to appear, and if i make more than a few of them at a time photoshop freezes for a minute or two sometimes, so I'm in the market for a new videocard. The rest of my system isn't bad perse, all drivers including the video drivers are updated. So what video cards are everyone using? I'm currently looking to upgrade to a Radeon x850 (the agp model, because my motherboard dosen't support pci-e). Is the investment worth it? Or am I looking at another upgrade in a year? If so what can anyone recommend as a budget upgrade?

    Thanks!

The rest of my system specs are follows:
    AMD Athlon 64 3700+ (socket 754 version)
    Seagate 7200rpm 80gb SATA hdd 8mb cache
    1.25 gb kingston hyper-x pc3200
    DFI Lanparty NF3 250gb
    Saphire's Radeon 9600xt 256mb AGP
    450w power supply

I've got the ATI x800 GTO Radeon. Just got it a few months ago and LOVE IT! (Apparently the 800 and 850 are pretty much the same)

Very cool, thanks for the suggestion. What did you pay for it? The x850 i'm looking at now I can pick up for right around 200$, which I know isn't a bad deal. Do you know some of the main differences between the 800 and 850(pro)?

evga 7900GT KO "reloaded". I guess evga's 7900 series of cards had all kinds of problems, the "reloaded" series fixed all that. No problems here. Me likey!

As a side note, if I were you I'd go for the Nvidia 7800gs since you're still using AGP. I think it's the fastest of the dying breed of AGP on the market right now. I had the ATI 850 pro and it was a nice card but a little slow in the newer games. A buddy of mine has the 7800gs and it was quite an improvement over the ATI card. I don't think you're going to see the gains you want from moving to a 9600xt to an 850 though. I moved from a 9800 pro to the 850 and the gains were pretty good but not really mind blowing. Going from the 850 to the 7900gt was a nice improvement however. Good Luck!

ATI x700 (256MB) in my lappie, it runs everything I throw at it.

The canvas problem is actually because of your RAM, get more of it and the fastest frequency that your MB supports. I have a very old GPU on my other PC and it opens very hi-res images with no problem because it has quite a bit of RAM.

Let's see, I don't know the differences, but I payed just under $200 with tax and everything for mine. You can always compare all vid cards here: http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics.html

My husband got lucky and bought the ultimate badass of all cards for a huge discount. The ATI Radeon X1900. OMG. It runs graphic heavy games so smoothly, it's absolutely amazing! If you can afford that card, get it! You won't be sorry.

Thanks for the responses everyone, i will shop around a bit and compare the cards you mentioned (against my starving wallet).

AngryScientist - How much ram you got packed in your laptop? I'd imagine that the 1.25 gb ram i got in my desktop should handle the high res canvas without much problems, especially considering that I have a pretty fast processor with a decent fache (1 mb l2 cache). Nevertheless more RAM can never be a bad thing, right? Thanks again.

the Ram shouldn't be the problem...the graphic card neither, i think since 10 years in 2D ALL graphic cards are on same performance, the difference is in 3D power...

I only have 512 DDR2@667MHz, but it's a bit bad at times, I'm upgrading that as soon as I make some money. My old PC had 1 gig and it runs very smoothly for such an old PC.

Indeed you have plenty of RAM on your PC, are you sure it's all working? Some cheaper RAM can give errors and stop working, causing huge problems. This is a good prog for testing that - Memtest. Apparently you need to run it twice for proper results.

But I'm just pulling these things out of my @ss, so there's a very slim chance that that is the problem.

I'm running a quadro 1500m in my laptop. It's equivalent to a 7900 gt, but it's the workstation version.

450 mhz gpu, 600 mhz memory, 256 mb ram.

It's embarrasing but I just put together a new machine and there was a discounted 7950 when I bought the mobo on Newegg.

some weeks ago i was using a ati 9600pro and was quite satisfied with it, but when i upgrader to amd 64(x2 4600+ , 2gig ram), I didn't choose a motherboard with an agp slot because i'm going to upgrade graphics later, so right now i'm using my inegrated geforce 6150 an dual screen setup, and in default applications it's great hehe, but not any good for games, i can barely play ut2004 anymore .
but for photoshop, the graphics cards isn't that important (other than color quality).
sometimes i need more ram really, photoshop got a bad habit of shutting down when there is no ram free, and that happends quite a lot.
I'm thinking of buying a graphic card for about 100E later on, at christmas maybe, or in april if i can get some posters sold thn at the yearly rpg convention in gothenburg.
