    Professional Graphic Design Forums?

Anyone know a good professional grade forum like CA that focuses on graphic design? I want to work on my graphic design skills a bit, but need some good inspiration, and a forum with some great artists would do the trick.

    Hi Dfacto

Unfortunately there aren't a lot of sites, that i know of anyway, for graphic design. If you're looking for some inspiration check out www.Commarts.com, www.adobe.com or www.visualeditors.com

Commarts has a design portfolio area, mostly for designers looking for jobs, where you can view a lot of new work. If anything it's good for inspiration and to see what's being done RIGHT now in the design world. They do have a small "forum" there, but it's nothing like CA. (Actually, if you ask your question there, you may get better links to real design forums)

Visual Editors is a forum site...and is so/so. There just aren't a lot people there, but, if you're lucky you can get one or two responses from some very talented designers.

There are probably a lot of other sites out there, but these are the ones i know of.

I'd say this though. If you really want good design inspiration, just walk into a Borders. Go to the Design section and just sit there for an hour. Look at every annual. Write down the names of the designers you like, then see if they have website.

    Good luck

I'm piggybacking on dfacto's thread, anyone knows a place with good info on type? I know a few very basic things about the use of type but I think I'd benefit from learning more.

That's a good request qitsune. I need that too, since all I do now is use canned text and maybe stretch or squash a bit.

Thanks for the replies so far, especially groover. I thikn Howdesign.com fits the bill pretty well so far.

Here you have some nice general typography sites (most of the ones I have bookmarked are about designing typography itself, if anyone is interested on those I can post some as well):
    http://www.typeculture.com/
    http://www.typographi.com/

http://www.typophile.com/ ---> this one is down atm, but is a very good site, so I added it just in case they put it back up again.

This one has lots of stuff, but I find it a bit weird:
    http://cg.scs.carleton.ca/~luc/fonts.html

And if anyone knows Spanish, this is my actual favourite, has lots of very varied info:
    http://www.unostiposduros.com/
you can get a Google translated version, but it's not very good.

I wish I could be more helpful, but most of what I've learnt about the subject was looking to A LOT of work, reading many books and magazines, making lots of mistakes (and sometimes having them pointed out by my teachers), going to workshops and stuff, and not so much on websites.

Maybe we could have a GD subforum here at CA... ahem...

http://www.typotheque.com/site/index.php <--- kick ass type articles. About the GD subforum, it actually isn't a bad idea.. but i think it would have to be related to illustration in a more intimate way then normal. Normal graphic design really doesn't use illustration much. But maybe we could emphasize in certain aspects like correct type usage (something that a lot of people are clueless about), portafolio design, personal promotion design, & portafolio website design. All stuff that an illustrator/concept artist/art director would consider useful.

Concerning these things, don't rely on the web. Books are better resources. Of course, it's not cheap. Graphic design books are expensive.

    ÜberSchrift - Erik Spiekermann - 29,80 €
This one is a good start. It's easy to understand and is written by one of the best type-designers (I think he re-designed the Deutsche Bahn-type and corporate design this year).

Detailtypografie - Ralf De Jong, Friedrich Forssman - 98,00 €
This book is a blast. It's the first and best typography lexicon out there. Explains everything concerning how letters should be placed, letter-spacing, rules concerning special characters and all that stuff. Great stuff.

    Anatomie der Buchstaben - Karen Cheng - 68,00 €
Another masterpiece. This time dealing with the creation of typefaces. I took a look at this book in the bookstore, really detailled.

Concerning graphic design, there is a good series of design books and magazines. First of all, you should buy NOVUM magazine. The best design-magazine in Germany. http://novumnet.de/

Next thing: "Best Of Brochure Design" - A great series of international graphic design collections.
Best Of Brochure Design 7 - 25 bucks
