    late night painting(s) +1

Had a bit of insomnia the past couple days...So I've been drawing thought it would tire me out but all it's been doing is making me more awake...

hope this is alright anyway...wanted it to be a junkyard-ish summoning scene...

crits and comments very much appreciated...

You definitely have the depth of field going on! Your composition is good too, leads my eyes around. The red stuff though....looks nice enough but only nice enough that I can't help but think it could look *better*.

    Good work!

Love it GT. The giants motifs, graphic shape and colour pallete are my favourite elements. Maybe some markings on the pillar wouldn't go amiss?

Awesome, can't really figure out what the background story might be, which only makes it even more interesting, and gives me yet another reason to look at it a little longer. Great colours, great concept.

Love it, and god I wish my insomnias produced that kind of stuff!

greentopaz.. your stuff is always interesting.. nice concepts{though i cant be sure what they are...} and nice colours.. the one thing i can see is that the stone guy up in the foreground has a much shorter head than the others..

my crits and comments are that it's f*ckin' dope
I might have liked to see a pose or something else from the character in the middle. if she's summoning giant guys, she looks pretty friggin indifferent about it, which muddles the read.
i think a pose would help fix it, but what about something else? maybe her eyes could be glowing a certain color, and so are all her golems' eyes... anyway, i love the mood, style and execution of this. i'll just say that i didn't know it was a summoning until i read what you wrote.

*edit: !!! I don't mean to impose here, but after looking at it longer i think there's a really clear way to show she's summoning the giants. trail the red ribbon up their bodies to imply the clear "connection" between her and them. i couldnt put my finger on it until now but looking at it i couldn't help wonder where the ribbons go...

Topaz, those are the most adorable garbage monsters I've seen in my life

I have to agree with Kress, that she looks pretty nonchalant about the whole thing. I think it's a pretty nice picture, though. Great work, little champ

    Wow, awesome!!

That's all i was going to say, however what Kress said about trailing the red up the giants got me thinking. Perhaps it could flow up the channels on their bodies, 'powering them up'?

This could also help show why they're all in static poses (except the closest one and, to a lesser extent, the one behind [it's hand]). You could make the closest one's grooves filled with red and show the one behind it with the red just reaching the thighs maybe

Just a suggestion, it's still an effing great illu

I totally see what you're saying Kress. However, I feel the mood fits perfectly with the emotion insomnia would bring. The indifference of the girl is, to me the xfactor of this image. Having giant stone creatures coming at you, while appearing apathetic and indifferent, totally make it work. Its a very subtle but powerful concept in my opinion.

Edit: Also, its a late night insomnia drivin image, it doesnt have to make complete sense. Which is it's charm.

Kian, I see your point. Now that you mention it, the indifference of the girl (as expressive of an emotive state) is rather charged with meaning in the face of these oncoming giants.
But is this piece about a girls powers, or insomnia (or both )?
I'm really just talking about making an illustration vs. a fine art piece. An illustration should, in some way, communicate something clearly for all to see. A fine art piece is at the whim of it's creator, and can express things any way it wants.
In terms of this being an *illustration*, I think it could benefit from being "clearer" by showing, without a doubt, a connection between the girl and the giants. And I'm only emphasizing this because the artist mentioned that's what this is about. So my critique is about making a clear and narrative image. The emotion content is all there, and I'm totally on board as far as that's concerned
OK I've said way too much, sorry if I'm coming off hooty-tooty

I love the way the lines wrap up around her. Love the monsters as well? Happen to work at 1600x1200 for a good desktop version?

Very cool. Sort of reminds me of the novel Perido Street Station in a weird kinda Mayan way! ...Okay that probably didn't make sense.

Love the foreground, and although the background is well faded to get the depth, it probably doesn't match the vibrancy of the former. Perhaps it's because the girl draws too much focus away from the rest of the image. It would be almost better if she were more obviously directing your eye towards the creatures in some way.

Having said that, I still love the image.

This is great. I actually like her nonchalent pose - I think it fits in well with the overall image. In a way, it looks as though the monsters are checking up on the girl by will, rather than the girl summoning them.

Man, you have no idea how unsettling it is for me knowing we're the same age xD Keep on rockin', girl.

I have to agree with Kress' first point- I really think it would have been better if the girl at least had some sort of movement or action- even if she still looked indifferent (think Raven from TT... I know you know!!)

Looks great, Lizzy. Really awesome trash golems. My only crit is that there is a tangent where a cone shaped piece of trash touches its tip on the edge of an arm.

    Awesome stuffs

Sweet, Great colors palette. I like the static pose. The giants design is awesome. If anything the two big dark shape in the foreground. Are a tad to symmetrical, non descriptive and maybe to "black". But they do work good as framing device so...

    Liking it a lot.

Really nice work! I love the stonemen! I think you could either add in a shadow for the red ooze and maybe even saturate the reds to really make the image pop!

Green Topaz i love this piece

I'm starting to believe that great art is "1/3 technique" and "2/3 idea." You definitely have a gift in your imagination, keep it fresh, keep it exercised because we all want to see more! I agree about "something needed to make it pop" the reds might do it.

Thank you for sharing, I am inspired to make something.

Thanks so much for all the crits and comments and suggestions everyone...they make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside XD I'll take them and see if I can't make some improvements, but the nonchalance thing was intentional and I'd really like to keep it...anyway:

Interceptor: aren't they? but really...I'm not that little...

J.Kei: yeah though I guess it doesn't look too different from my OC stuff does it...? I'm finding it hard to break out of the single brush, but there is a little bit of paper texture in there.

Amish: dunno...Is there some reason I'm not old enough now? I didn't know there was an 'nyc crew'...

BlueMech: I suppose I could send you a bigger version if you'd really like...but I wanna try and fix it first...=d

Pixel: I know! XD but TT's an action cartoon! She'd have to be actiony no matter what her personality was like =O

I.was.ink: inspired to paint over my piece...heheh...but thanks, really, it is helpful

It seems like I've had another late night/early morning, and since I hate to post in my own thread without any art...here's what I spent the time on: (hope it's okay)

well, gonna try to get some sleep...thanks again and apologies for being so smiley-whorish

I totally agree with this, that's the first thing I was drawn to.

I also agree with the changes I.was.ink made, I think some more angles would really help the composition.

That being said, both of these pieces are absolutely fantastic. You are incredibly talented and I'm sorry I didn't get to talk to you more at the workshop
