Another *cough* figure study from photo reference. Been doing these a lot looser than before, no more measuring! Just getting right too it. Enjoying the freedom this allows me, the extra expression it allows as well, not only in brushstrokes but with a shorter amount of time spent on these I of course feel freer to mess around. I'm rambling, time for sleep I think.
Face is bunk, min told me the texture made it even more bunk too. Lots of other bunkness too... Hehe, o'well all in the name of experimentation.
Yeah, texture may have been a mistake - but it's through rampant experimentalism that we learn ... about mistakes. And the best mistakes are those we learn from... I think I was trying to cover up some sloppy brushwork actually. But messing with textures is fun too.
Very nice tutorials, all of them, I learn a lot looking at them. I'm very impressed. Nice similarity too with the portrait ref. You got it all, Tom, you just need to discipline yourself about saturation . You are overusing it in your enviros and cartoons., IMO. Everything is focal point, you don't allow your viewer to have a moment of rest on something soft and indefinite.

Thanks Sveta! Glad that you are getting something out of them. Haha, discipline with saturation? I like eye burning colors. I do know what you mean though, Mr. Blonde has been on me for the same thing. I'm started to experiment with it more and more, but there is always a place for eye burning colors I think. Cheers!
I was watching your second demo (probably you have moved forward, and have no interest in this), but I was thinking that it would be great if from that aerial view, you show, blurred, and behind the clouds, some ground. You know, houses and farm deliniations, of the ground far far away.
Anyway, as I said you probably have moved forward.
PS: It's great to see someone that make a real step-by-step, and I apriciated much.

Thanks allot, humongous amount of thanks ! These help so much, they're really really of great use, thanks for your trouble ! Now first step is buy me a new Wacom, do many of you use a tiny one A6 or A5 or is everyone drawing on bigger Tablets ?

If you are broke, buy a Graphire4 - I used a Graphire 2 4x5 for years and didn't have any problems. But I love my Intuos

--- Notes: You will need the capability to decompress .RAR files. Codecs are included in each .RAR. For this set there are 2 codecs, parts 1-2 use the CamStudio Codec; parts 2-4 use the msu-sc Codec. Both codecs are lossless however the msu has a smaller file size and better capture I believe. Installation is very simple. Videos are sped up, exact times I don't know. One or two of the files doesn't seek as well as I would like it to, but the issue is fixed in later videos.

Let's just say, technical error for the last part . MikeCorriero asked me a few questions I'll try and answer them as well as I can;
The brush I used 99% of the time in this was a default round; size, opacity and flow set to pressure. I almost never use the manual opacity and for this particular style I found it best to use 100% flow as I didn't really have to 'blend' much. After the initial sketch I used an abstract brush with many hard edges to sort of lay down a base coat of the primary color I had envisioned for this painting. Directly afterward I used a soft light layer and the same brush to create even more variety in color, overtop of which I also use an overlay layer with the same method. Here I was establishing the general palette I used for the next several rendering steps. It can also be great to use the clone brush with these methods as it adds another layer of grit, grime and variance. Now, next came something I've really been enjoying lately something I saw Andrew Jones demonstrate at the recent San Franciso workshop. Duplicate your layers, or hit ctrl+alt+e. Flip this duplicate canvas, set it to either lighten or darken and experiment with it's position on the canvas, you may also want to enlarge your canvas by 200% in each direction. I think you'll find that some things work quite well symmetrically and others work best if you stretch and distort the canvas. Overall I really enjoy this technique - it's helped me see many possibilites that I would otherwise never see. I think it's also a great tool for conceptualizing. Moving on I used a 'dirt' brush, very low impact with essentially small bristles to add even more grit to the canvas. Afterwhich came one of the most drastic changes done with the editing modes; curves, color balance and selective color. If you have Adobe CS or above you will be able to click on these adjustment layers to view them in more detail. These are very handy tools if you've changed your mind about what colors/values you want as well as changing mood etc. Even if I haven't changed what I have in mind, I will still experiment with these and most often find something that I think works even better. The next steps are just more rendering and in the final just a unsharp mask to help visibility for web as well as tweak some edges.

Okay! Figured I'd write this up while it was still fresh in my mind; happy that you guys are interested!
So, always nervous about sharing 'trade secrets', feels like a rumpelstiltskin moment - that and you find out just how much of a hack I am...
Notes: Final result is flipped horizontally. I actually worked back and forth at times, I felt it worked best as flipped in the final. Brushes used; default round brush! hehe. Settings; size at 70% minimum diameter, size to pressure, flow and opacity to pressure. Manual Opacity always at 100%, manual flow at 100% or 60%.
1 - Previous image used as resource, normally the borders would be transparent but saving as a JPEG doesn't allow this.
2 - Something a little new for the process, just adding in some backdrop. This is a previous version that didn't pan out.
3 - Check the PSD for more steps; here I am just playing with shapes some more. Duplicating parts of the canvas, flipping and transforming sometimes and using darken/lighting layer modes to combine.
4 - More shape play, I have some idea of what I want at times and other times no clue; just experimenting until something catches my eye. Note the crappy sihoulettes of that man popping up :|
5 - Clone Stamp and repainting. Covering seams and fleshing out the terrain a bit.
6 - Refining, painting. Note the cave in the bottom right, was again just playing with shapes but later decided against it.
7 - Oo, big change. This layer is actually a duplicate of all that is above, stretched out and transformed on a lighten layer. Take a closer look in the PSD if you please
8 - Little bit more refinement and then a higher value slightly warm 'glaze' using a multiply layer. I did this not only to change the palette a bit but also I wanted to paint in some clouds and had lost my upper value range.
9 - Started the clouds, still taking it easy on my value range and not really committing to any firm shapes at the moment.
10 - Refining the clouds and 'glazed' a bit, this time with a soft light layer. I had felt that the eye wasn't too contained in the composition and was experimenting with a bit of a vignette.
11 - Adding more form to the clouds and giving them a base. I always struggle with giving clouds perspective. The offkey patch you see on the right is where I decided to make a new layer to experiment a bit before committing.
12 - More refinement on the clouds and another 'glaze'. Colors are really out of whack at the moment but I wanted to explore another feel.
13 - Again, refining and cleaning up the out of key color from the previous edits.
14 - Added a strip of blue, this is something I think was directly influenced from my weekend trip
15 - Refinement, pushed the end of the clouds back a little (I hope) and a slight color balance it looks like.
16 - Lots of color edits; color balance, curves, selective color. If you have Photoshop CS or higher you can take a closer look at the adjustment layers in the PSD.
17 - A few more tweaks and *gasp* a little dodge tool. Maybe that was a mistake I don't know
And here is the final; Looks like I toned a few things down.

Ah bummer, I had thought the mac vs. pc wars were over; never thought for a second that it wouldn't work on both. I'll look into other lossless codecs, or maybe just use xvid in the future. Really wish I had a clue to what I am doing haha.

Sorry didn't read the whole thread if you posted this but.. so you're using both hard and soft fuzzy edged brushes in photoshop? I have this huge problem of when I work in photoshop, I use a hard edged brush mainly and it just ends up most of the time looking too "thin" or something, 'cause of the opacity being on pen pressure. Should I not do that? Blending takes FOREVER when it is like that, but I'm not sure how to do another way..
Painter I use the charcoal most of the time, and it achieves the look I want so far closest. Hmmm - something is just not clicking for me ! A lot of images now I go in and put down colors in painter, and then do a little bit of color tweaking and/or smaller details in photoshop.
Sorry if this is vague, I'm not sure what I'm asking, haha.. if it's unanswerable I'll go and demo what I mean in photoshop.

Yeah I use a basic round brush in photoshop, this allows me to quickly change the overall hardness of the brush with ctrl+[ and ctrl+]. Generally I like to block at full or near full hardness, a little softer for finer rendering and much softer for blending.

I have a few settings on, I find this is the most efficient and most natural feel for me - allows me to vary how much paint I put down not only with pressure but with speed. The settings I usually use are as such; size to pressure, minimum size to 70% (lower and I find it harder to control when blending), opacity and flow to pen pressure, manual opacity always at 100% and flow I have lately had at 40%. Think of flow as controlling how much paint comes out in relation to time, very handy for finer control.
I'm not sure what you meant by thin, I think maybe you might set your tablet up to a "softer" feel so you don't have to press hard to get full opacity - it's better for your arms too, we have to worry about carpal tunnel and other RSI enough
I'm not surprised you jump between Painter and PS, I did too. I find it really difficult to get the edges I want in Painter, really you need at least two brushes - one soft and one hard to get what you want. You really can't beat PS's color editing either.
