I learned that he hates oils, loves gouche and has only done 3 acrylic paintings.

And thinks photoshop and a wacom are inprecise for painting.....for him.

    Typical entertainment designer type attitude?

Despite all that, he still kicks your ass.

Is it just me or do other people expect these " heroes" to look like the cliche wise old sage... ready to spout wisdom as if they were just uttering normal grumblings. This guys looked like your everday normal guy. Thanks for posting this!

Speaking of Syd Mead, does anyone have any of his art books (eg. Sentury)? Are they good? They're expensive though

To what Chingwa was saying. Your right. These people especially one of them being Syd Mead, are my heroes. I didn't expect him to be this all knowing wizard, the reason i look into these guys myself personally is it's always refreshing to know a lot of good artists are just normal people and started out just like you and me.

I love doing this, and I'm glad to know I dont have to be born with a super inate ability to have the potential to create something enjoyable, and to recieve appreciation for that. Just be persistent and always do better than what you did before.

but yeah chingwa i agree with you about him being a normal every day person who is just insainly good at what he does. its also inspiring to see someone of his age still having a passion for what he has been doing for so long.

We all saw the same interview, didn't we?

I just thought it was strange that he was very paticular about the mediums he uses, and how untraditional they are........he thinks like a.....designer. It seem contrary to traditional training pertaining towards medium.

It's like industrial art training makes a certain mindset from traditional artists?

umm... Don't most people have one medium that they prefer over others? I think focusing on an artist choice of medium and pinpointing him under a label of a "designer" is missing the point of the interview. Does it really matter if he uses oils, gouache, or watercolor??? I think what is more interesting is hearing this man talk about the industry he's been working in for 40+ years... seems he has a lot of insight into a lot of things.

In any case... the best fine artists are also "designers" and the best "designers" are also fine artists, or so I always thought. The more you know.... ya know?

for those of you in the NYC area, or looking for an excuse to come up (like you really even need one), Syd Mead is doing a lecture at the Society of Illustrators on OCTOBER 19th. This really is the greatest city in the world.
