whipped this badboy up in about 3 hours. got a little more into the rendering of this one, but im happy with the looser results im achieving. i'm steering well clear of any soft-edged brushes, this is all with the basic round brush and a few texture brushes for good measure.

as always, 10 points to the first who can name the movie its from.

10 points to Mr Delicious for being a big enough nerd to know Diphallia, you probably haven't seen it cause it was a little before your time.

for anyone who hasn't seen it, i seriously recommend it. a youngish bruce willis, a drop dead gorgeous milla jovovich, and a slightly fruity but always hilarious chris tucker. also has LOTR great Ian Holm and a few other familiar faces. full of aliens, cool guns, hover cars. good inspiration.

So stoph graphic novel as in comic? or more like a childens book.
You know that Comics is like a boat trip you can take, just try not to become the captain of the ship! Its so hard getting free from comicbook style drawing. But its a good exercise for compositions, like your DVD exercise is as well. Im gonna give that a go looks like the most fun you can have with studying digital and color pieces. DO you work with Painter or Photoshop? I find it helpful to mix a bit.
And hell yeah you improved. just look at those eye picked colors in the DVD frame paintings. Thats color improvement.
Good luck with the writing, And post doodles or I might date your mom.

B-Man: my mum is taken, but i'm sure she'd be flattered graphic novel as in comic book. the good thing is that in pairing up with one or more people for this project means i dont call all the shots. its handy to bounce ideas off of each other too. today was no exception. no doodles yet, but were up to (very very) rough storyboarding now. its exciting, im seeing all these frames in my head and i cant wait to get them down! i use PSCS3, used to use Painter but i never got round to updating and now PS is my staple diet.

heres a crappy little doodle, not really worth sharing, couldnt be bothered rendering in full, it was really a loose figure study from my head. just felt like drawing hands, to be honest ill do a serious update soon

    stoph,

I was looking at your movie stills, was really impressed, kept going back in posts... wondered why the change... then read the first post and it all made sense. I think people with a graphic design backgrounds have a good eye for composition and effective use of communication through images, not to mention a better use of typography. I thought I would suggest a list of films that have good imagery/photograhy...

    Young Frankenstien
    Jason And The Agronauts
    Vertigo
    Psycho
    Rear Window
    Strangers On A Train
    ...
    well, any Hitchcock movie... hmmm...
actually there is a few paintings in his movies I would really like to have
reprints of but cant find. The first one is the clown laughing in Blackmail
and the second is the portrait of Carlotta in Vertigo...

    http://faculty.cua.edu/johnsong/hitc...portraits.html
(Blackmail one... I imaged a blue and orange color scheme on it.)

    Back to that list...

    Dr. Strangelove
CITIZEN KANE!!! or any Orson Welles film
    Nosferatu,
    Metropolis,
    Potemkin,
Any of the Universal studios monster movies (1930's-50's)
Casablanca, Maltese Falcon, The Two Mrs. Carols... or any Bogart film
Any film done by Felini, Fritz Lang, Sergi Eisenstien, Robert Wise, Truffaut, or John Ford...

The list could go on but thats just me wishing for film paintings. Your work already looks beyond any criticism I could give so I'll just say good work and keep it up.

Have you done comic book stuff before? Its good that you wont have to worry about writing, that gives you more time to draw. I know how it feels to be so eager to start drawing all the cool frames you have in your head. Thats what I liked the most in comics, when someone hand you a script and you really cant wait to start. To bad I was so bad at drawing when I started doing comics. I guess I have come a long way since. Are you gonna do it in your "gorrillaz" style drawings? That would be awsome.
Will you be able to post your drafts, Will they let you?
Post sketches and concepts! Or I´ll date your Dad! and if hes taken Ill date yor sister!

otsopsanig & Coinpurse: never saw the show personally. wont bother colouring the piece, was just a silly little wind down for the day.

Munghard & hurricane: cheers fellas, always appreciate the support

Slechtvalk: i agree about your observations regarding composition and the communication of ideas, it was something that was drilled into me and i've made a point to retain it. design may be boring at times, but it has a lot of good principles to remember when it comes to illustrations (especially ones from the imagination). i cant say i've ever sat down to watch anything of Bogart's or Hitchcock's at length, maybe a snippet here or there, but never anything substantial enough to give a fair grasp of the photography used. iirc, they dealt with film noir for the most part? i do enjoy a well composed and shot scene with stunning values - especially if the effect that is aimed for by the director can be achieved without colour to emphasise. i'll have a look at a few of the films you listed when i can have the chance, if youre nice i may well paint a scene or two thankyou for your contributions here!

B-Man: haven't done much in the way of sequential work before, but i've read enough (and own enough for reference) to understand what works and what doesnt. i have those that i look up to - Hewlett and Wood being the main benefactors - when it comes to telling a story through sequentials. as such, i think the style of the novel will be a homage to them.

i want there to be sketchy, raw panels, spliced with fully rendered, more realistic panels. i love the juxtaposition of the two. provides dynamic and interesting contrasts. also, it allows me better control over the pace that it is both completed and read. the sketchier frames do a great job in conveying movement, as they encourage the eye to flit quickly over them, as opposed to the carefully rendered images that encourage the eye to linger and take in all the detail, all the while processing what has just happened. Wood is a master at this, and i hope to master it myself during the process. i also want to put my design skills to good use, so i will push myself when it comes to composition and cropping, as well as contrasting forms and values. overall, i want it to be very much so like its being viewed through a lens.

since its my brainchild, and there arent any strict lockdowns on what i can and cant share, i will post small samples of both roughs and finals to whet the appetite. i dont want to give a lot of it away, simply because i want it to be seen in its entirety. i can see it becoming quite lengthy.

oh, and my sister says youre not her type. my dad is getting the axe....

    .. run.

Wood as in Brian Wood? I love his style but I guess its not easy to controll the messyness. My geuss is this will be you biggest challange in this. Considering your graphic background I guess you might just pull it of. Are you gonna work digital on it or just get all the oldschool stuff like indian ink and big silverblade-papers. Digital right? easier to correct errors.
I understand that you want people to see it when its a finished piece but make sure to save progress-shots of it. Would make an awsome dump if you plan on posting some finished stuff.
Oh damn. Why is it you australians grab the axe when a man just wants a little man-love.

B-Man: nahh Wood as in Ashley Wood, better known for his work on the Metal Gear Solid graphic novels and his own series, Popbot, Robots vs. Zombies, and recently a re-make of Tank Girl comics. i'll probably do a majority of it digitally, but i wouldnt mind doing some analogue stuff to bring in some gritty-ness here and there. i will save progress shots as often as i remember, dont worry. i've been toying with the idea that, when its all completed, we release a limited edition complete version with additional material such as cover variants, character sketches, early concepts and so on and so forth. the idea is not only to create a novel strong in story and artwork, but also to generate considerable monetary proceeds for the charities the Salvation Army runs (money is always sorely needed). so i figure some limited edition stuff right at the end with easter eggs and all should not only complement people's collections, but make them feel better for forking out a bit more for charity. the only thing im getting out of this process is the experience and the enjoyment of doing what i love to help others. thats all i ask, thats all i require.

heres an update for tonight. feeling a little forelorn, so it isnt one of my better attempts. got very lazy towards the end. about 1.5hrs, i wasnt paying attention. decided to choose a scene i've always liked, and figured it's obscure enough that it may take a couple of goes to guess where its from.

10 points is up for grabs!

hehe, i painted this to help you guys guess the origin of the last painting. theyre from the same movie. i predict a "OHHH YEAHHHH!!" of realisation, followed by a roll of the eyes, a click of the tongue, possibly even a slap on the forehead. this piece taught me a lot in regards to depth of field. i found it most interesting that, though certain characters in the shot were completely out of focus, they were still immediately recognisable as that character. something to draw upon later, methinks. was kinda bummed at the lack of colours in this one, but oh well. about 3 hours on this one (i actually tried for once!)

20 points up for grabs - come on guys!
