The sand hunter camoflauges himself as a camel... his real head emerges from his fake ass and he mauls you and chomps on your bones! the bulk of his neck and head is hidden inside his hump. His tail is used to mimic the silouhette of a camel's head.

    Sandstorm Walker
Sandstorm Walkers are among the deadlier hazzards facing travellers who attempt to cross the desert that lies between the cities of Great Wheel and Mosaic. These highly intelligent pack hunters use the sands of the desert as both weapon and camoflage. Much of a Walker's internal structure is a complicated system of hollow tubes which allow a Walker to syphon sand up through its feet, while openings located higher on its body draw in air. The walker uses this stored air both to expel sand and reshape the flow of the wind around it. Packs of Sandstorm Walkers work in concert to craft small, localized sandstorms that mask their numbers and exact positions. Walkers also use these blasts of sand to disorient and disable prey.

    Journal (1844, Zaire, Africa)
You know, this creature ain't that bad at all. just staring at me with them glased eyes... You whouldent tell it could kill me in a split second... Man its hot out here. Hmmmm, i was lucky- it's just had its meal. Poor African. It's a shame these are becoming extinkt, after all, the villagers hunt them down just for there beautiful red fur... Hmmm might be the last one i will ever see. Funny fackt about this creature is- the locals here in zaire call it "sandhunter", becouse it hunts the sands of the desert for humans. It's digestion system can't digest bones. They spectacurly grow to his own wich creates fantastic forms. Wow, wish you where here to see this Elize.
(Jonathan Holmes never returned from Zaire)
One year later the last Escapolus Nescutus aka "sandhunter" was found near Boende, Zaire dying from severe stabs to the stomach by African spears.

    The desert devil
This large creature, from one to three meters long, lives primarly in South Africa deserts, people from the African villages calls it "the desert devil" and says that they can kill from foxes and rabbits to camels and humans. This creatures predation method is fascinating and almost perfect; they dig a hole in the sand or some times wait for a sand storm to get 'em covered and then they get their back and elbow thorns out and wait for their victims to get near, once the prey steps anywhere near the thorn their tail moves at 45 meters per second and sting their victim filling its body with a neurotoxic venom that interfere with neurotransmissions and paralyzes it within seconds, then they just come out to have their great banquet or to save it at the hole in where they'd been...

    DANDUNE CHACK
(Farsi for "tooth of the sand")
These huge creatures live in the large equitorial deserts of New Persia, a planet circling around Zuben-el-Akrab (scorpio's scissor).
They hunt their prey by waiting in the sand for some victims appearance.
Their body is very adapted to the desert's live so some body appendages change into special formed shapes
    1. The upper limbs change into fins with leather like skin
the lower limbs seem to disappear from the outward appearence,
actually scientis believe that the DANDUNE CHACK 's ancients had
2 legs shaped like the arms in the past, which grew together and form
    it's fluke like tail
    2. The fur is reduced to a tight mane on the DANDUNE CHACK 's back.
The hairs can racognize smallest shocks in the sand when the DANDUNE
CHACK lays deeper in the sand waiting for some victim stepping around.
    3. The two antennaes in the neck are snorkels for the time the DANDUNE
CHACK is waiting for it's victim coming around.
    4. The eyelids are very thick and protect the eye against sand and sunshine.
Some of the younger ones are even not able to open their eyes because
    they don't really need them.
    5. The nasal cavity is placed on the head to get a mantle of air around the
body for swimming through the sand at low friction.

    Bone Jackal
Through burying itself in the sand, the bone jackal's protrusions and armor plating create the illusion that it is nothing more than a creature's skeleton.
This deception allows for prey to pass within striking distance, such as the delicious dune bunny. The Bonejackal can remain concealed for up to several days, using a pair of secondary nostrils located in the false "eye sockets" of its head protrusion.

    Pygmy Desert Demon
C-3PO may not have been able to abide those Jawas (disgusting creatures!) but even Jawas can't tolerate these imps of the Tatooine landscape. Pygmy Desert Demons stand about two feet tall, can run at speeds up to 50kph even in the most extreme heat and will eat just about anything living or dead, even bantha poo-doo. No one really knows if they are indigenous to Tatooine or not, as random additions to the biosphere often arrive as stow-aways on a smuggler's less than tidy ship. Most creatures who arrive this way don't survive the desert, but the Pygmy Desert Demon thrives. Often running in packs of twenty or more, a kabal of Pygmy Desert Demons working together can drop an unattended baby dewback in minutes. Generally, Pygmy Desert Demons are content catching smaller prey, and attacks on Jawas are not unheard of. Pygmy Desert Demons cannot be domesticated, do not make good pets, don't taste good any way you try to cook them, and have a nasty sting on their tail that detaches and burrows into the skin like a small worm. Though not fatal to most creatures larger than themselves, the sting of the Pygmy Desert Demon is very painful and hard to remove. Most human inhabitants of Tatooine try to avoid them.

So the Miragia is the an escaped spieces that alien visitors to earth lost control of while doing genetic experiments with in the Saharah Desert. The Miragia has been dubbed the sand hunter for its ability to voluntarily shed its skin revealing a layer of skin that makes in invisible to all forms of detection. It only has this ability when in extremly dry and hot environments. The Miragia main diet is military personel assigned to captureing the beasts before they mate and their numbers become to great.

    Taklamakan Torment
Those that traveled the silk road through the Taklamakan desert knew of it's names but dared never to speak them aloud.
Scribed on scraps of roughspun in a shaking hand and staked to long poles in intervals; flags fluttered from the baking heat that read 'son of Moros' or βασανιστής, (torment).
Moros, his name in greek legend was 'doom' itself. βασανιστής, (torment) was his son, born of a desert nymph, and was said to have fled to the east after being accursed by Apollo on his wedding day as his mother raised her voice in singing praises.
Sadly, over aeons of living alone among the brutal sands, he was slowly hammered into madness and corruption. Brutal death would befall any that would pass the time of their long journey in song or prayer; for they were a bitter reminder of the day his life was forever bound to it's hellish fate.
Those Tocharian elders of the silk road that knew when the west wind flowed, would never travel no matter how desperate their need, for the dunes came alive in song and 'torment' rose.

Unusual sand sifting feeding behavior. It's lower jaw is built to cut through the sand. As it runs and plows through the desert, it opens it's mouth to sift sand for organisms. Sand is shunted out behind it's jaws through gills on the side of it's head, while creatures larger than sand grains are retained in it's mouth to be swallowed. It posseses telescoping eyes that can view above the sand when on a feeding run. Hinds legs are use to power jump the beginning of it's feeding session.

    The Sandhunter (Incultus Onis)
This creature lives on the desert planes of the african continent and is known to kill all things living that cross its path.
Its origin is largely unknown but some crossbreeding between pigs and a large predatory birds is expected.
Very little is know of the sandhunter. All biologist trying to study it in the past have either gone missing or were found dead.
It is suspected that the sandhunter has a very bad temper.
Its habitat is in scattered parts of central africa, mostly in the area of the Zambia-Botswana border.

    concept:

The "Sand Hunter" of the desert. Looking a bit like a small goat, it carries two big plant-look-a-like balls with it's long tails. It has a blue fur which gives a very nice "cold" impression. Especially in the middle of a desert. People/ animals almost dying of thirst starts to hallucinate when they see this creature and will most probably follow it.
The Sandhunter will run ahead to set up a trap. It leaves 1 of the two balls behind, which folds open. It's like a flower with WATER in it ! When a creature touches the yellow poison (the flower can even fold up if it's still attached to the sand hunter) it'll faint. The sand hunter will wrap it's prey inside the ball (if it's too big, it wraps half of it, then dragging it along)
Everything inside the ball will be melted and formed into liquid after a while. It's used to fill up the other ball (the storageroom), which turns the liquid into water. Water is used as food and bait for this beautiful creature. When it's hungry, it suks the water out of the ball with the yellow stick. (It looks like a coconut drink )
When attacked, it uses it's horns and bone parts to defend. (it's ass is important, the tails are attached to it)
And OH BTW: might you ever have a chance to drink some of it's water, don't think what's in it. It's said to be quite healthy though...

    Dunemaker Churl
The Dunemaker Churl is a fierce sextepedal insect creature that hunts with four harpoonlike tongues that shoot forth using quick, concentric muscular action. Prey is speared with a tongue and drawn back to the waiting mouth, which is lined with inward-facing "teeth" that do nothing but anchor the prey within the jaw while the prey is digested. As its name suggests, the Dunemaker can create "dunes" by drawing loose sand up through a vent in its belly and dispersing it over itself through six muscular tubes on its back. In this way, a Dunemaker can become completely covered in sand, providing both camouflage and protection from the deadly desert heat of the sun. Stalklike eyes sit atop the dunes from the creature's rear and watch for passing potential prey.

    concept:

This odd creature is commonly referred to as "Nature's bear trap" or the "Sand pancake". It hides in the sand and waits for its prey to walk onto it. Once the prey is on top, the Sand pancake encloses; like petals retracting on a flower. This forms a bulb or "stomach" with the prey inside. At this point, the prey is digested.
The Sand pancake has two main features about it's digestive system. Firstly, the skin of the creature is lined with orange spores. These spores emit emzymes as well as acids for digestion. If you look at the underside of the Sand pancake, you will see that there is a redish mouth. This mouth swallows sand, and during digestion, spits it over the prey. The sand acts as an abrasive, helping break down the food. Eventually, the digested food passes into the blood stream.

    Mammoth Neuroptera
Mammoth Neuroptera’s are the giants of the desert. A special species of Mermexleon’s (Antlion’s), Mammoth Neuroptera’s, known as the whales of the sand, dwell deep under the sand dunes; however, these giants are also capable of boring through rock. Rather than waiting for food to come to them Neuroptera’s will hunt to satisfy their cravings. The tentacles that branch off of the beast’s abdomen are capable of extending up to 150 meters and can sense vibrations from up to 3 miles away. For small meals it is unnecessary for the Mammoth Neuroptera to make its presence aware to the surface; its tentacles can simply pull prey underground. For large meals, such as camels and horses, the Mammoth Neuroptera must spring from the surface. Desert Nomads describe the experience before a Mammoth Neuroptera as a localized mini-quake.

    Salt Lake Huntress
This female of the MSI species is a tracker, using her advanced skills and highly evolved senses to track prey animals for days across empty salt pans and sandy plains. Apart from their tool making ability and high intelligence, this species has numerous physical adaptations to help it survive here: The skin is partly reflective, acting like a mirror to deflect solar radiation. The ears, held high above the head, can detect the faintest sound, and numerous sense organs hang beneath the mouth out of the sun, able to detect tiny concentrations of scent molocules. Her eyes, placed around the mouth, evolved originally in deep forest, so many desert MSI become sunblind in at least their top eyes. The spear she carries is largely ceremonial: the kill itself will be made by a much larger male, who in this image has gone off to collect some drinking water from a nearby salt spring evaporative filter the harem set up years ago in the area.

Sand Hunters are fast running bipeds that live in the desert areas of Kol'rah, which connect to the southeastern beach where some similar species also reside. With their long legs, they can reach speeds of up to 65 km/h (40 mph). They chase their desert preys, which include smaller warm-blooded animals (and sometimes careless adventurers). Claw attacks are their primary weapon. Their hard exoskeleton provides a natural defense and a resistance to the hot climate.

Used heavily by the desert prison system as a means to stop and discourage breakouts, the Sand Hunter is a large beast with a mounted rider. The Sand Hunter evolved into a creature that can digest sand in order to extract nutrient and any moisture that it might hold, it also has a light fur that keeps it from freezing in the cold desert nights. The rider uses a sonic rifle to "shock" the sand while the creature uses it's acute hearing to listen for changes in density on and in the sand, allowing it to find objects and people hidden in the sand or escaping on foot.

Beasts of the sky, and the sand dunes. The local people of the desert have recently discovered that these beasts are skilled hunters, from the largest foes to even, the smallest Ox! They have stunning precision in their capability to pick out small targets....making them pretty dangerous.
They rest on the dunes during the day, with their body semi submerged in the sand. And when they see a target they launch out of the sand and swooop through the sky.
As you see here, there is a large doorway which is the kingdom that touches upon the territory of the sand dunes. The people come here to watch the game.....where a participant rides on the back of a Borse, the beast shown in the picture....and they have to see if they can survive the sand beast's attack! Many have died, fallen off or just run away never to be seen again!

    ...Tv zap in....
"Well, if you think this is some kind of mixture between a crumpled bag and the ugly dog from the lady living next door, let me tell you that you are wrong.
This, my dear friend of discovery television, is one of the most dangerous hunters living in the deserts of our planet. You are not believing me? Don’t let the cute exterior of this little guy fool you, he IS a mean little critter.
To catch his prey, this creature has developed a very special way of hunting its prey:
In it’s stomach, the common sandhunter generates some sort of smoothening liquid. When he has generated enough of this extreme secretion, he vomits it out on the plane desert sand. The sand covered with this secretion then actually turns into a small area of quicksand. Yes, frankly wicked, dear audience! Quicksand! Afterwards, the creature hiddes near in the normal sand and waits until a unsuspecting victim gets stuck in the small area of quicksand. While the prey is trying to free itself, the sandhunter jumps out of his hideout and injects a fast reacting poison into the victims bloodstream with its scorpion-like stinger. The effect is similar to the one which turns the sand into quicksand, literally liquifying the inner organs of the prey.
After that, the creature feasts on the prey.
What a horrible death, don’t you agree? I can see you are stunned beyond recognition...
By the way, he does use a similar strategy to multiply, namely to stuck the female in quicksand and get a hump on it... truly, a nasty little critter!
Sooo, coming up next, the three-headed bounce-snakes of Katamarong...stay tuned!"

    UHICHI aka SAND HUNTER
These small creatures live on the Sohak desert. Usually they hide in the shadow and come out only at sunrises and sunsets. They hunt for small organisms. Uhichi use for that small rocks and sand. In the back of their body, they have an “air-sack”, where store air. They can use this air for breathing for a short time under the sand surface (they do that, when they want to hide from predators or sun rays) or for shooting rocks. Shooting mechanism looks almost the same as in pneumatic rifle. They store air and when they release it, rocks can fly from their trunk for long distance. Uhichi usually just stun their preys but sometimes they even kill them. They hunt for small insects and lizards.

The Carcass King is a batlike creature that feeds on prey eating animals. It wraps himself in his fleshlike wings and places itself in the carcass or skeleton of dead animals. He looks like a big meatchunk. Then it waits until animals are going to feed on the carcass, that's when the carcass king goes for the kill. It can also be an undercover rock. The little hairs on his wings can catch sand and thus make him look like a big sand rock. With his strong tail and arms it launches himself at the creature (it can jump through a cows ribcage.)and grabs him with his claws and bites down in the neck of his victim. When encountering a big prey eating creature he can be in serious trouble, he then tries to fly off. (although he can't fly for long periods of time) The carcass king is known for eating children that are playing with dead animal carcasses. He can be found in dry area's and there have been cases where the creatures attacked farmers (and there were some investations of little farm towns).

    Shadowlovers Doom
A huge reptile, we can say dinosaur - the so called "Shadowlovers Doom" - is burying itself under the sand at the hottest and most abandoned place in the desert. It always position itself looking away from the sun, this is because the Shadowlovers Doom has a second tail which developed into a huge rock-like shape.
Thus the "rock" drops it shadow right on the back near the creatures head.
If any emaciated beings (poor nomades seen here on the image) settle down in the shadow for having a rest and colling down they practically pronounced their own sentence of death...
The reptile will shoot up by pulling itself with its arm holding the "rock" and grabbing his little snack, salty and hot, just as snacks has to be.
This trick works for each stage of the creatures growing phase, small "rocks" drop smaller shadows brings smaller prey, when being juvenile and bigger "rock", bigger shadow, bigger prey when grown up.
Biologists assume, that the reptile is wandering to the sea sometimes and luring for prey with the same methods, just burying itself under the sand underwater...prey will settle down there not for shadow but as a hiding or sleeping place or maybe seeking food for their own...
    C.O.W. - #054: Sand Hunter - Voting!

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    artist: 0kelvin
    concept:
    The Behemoth under Hole 14
The strange creature was first discovered as a pup, curled up in the third sandtrap of Hole 14 of the Hidden Butte Country Club Golf Course, by the course groundskeeper Applesweep. At that time it was no bigger than a small dog. Mr. Applesweep took the timid creature back to his shack and shared his lunch with him. They formed a bond immediately, and Applesweep would find the creature sitting in the bunker every day, waiting for him.
Over the following months, Applesweep realized the creature was growing at an alarming rate. It would soon be far too large to keep hidden at the golf course. He tried to take it home one night, but in the morning there was nothing in his yard but a large hole, and when he arrived at the golf course that morning he found the creature waiting in the third sandtrap of Hole 14.
After the fatalities began to happen, Applesweep came to regret letting the creature live underneath Hole 14. But even more than that, he came to regret teaching him how to play fetch.

OK - before voting/posting read this!!!

    1. Please give c&c or a reason why you voted for the image!

    2. Feel free to comment on any or all entries, the artists will appreciate it!

    3. No voting for your own entry!!! If a participants votes for his own entry, every member has the right to call him a stupid lame morone in this thread! And i will delete his/her vote anyway...

    not accepted entries:

    All WIPs

    ah.heng, vaughany_boy

improper effort for a weekly activity (read the rules!)

    spiritform
I can't spot a creature (design) on the main image, 2 images are not allowed, especially not if 1 is only a rough sketch.

    Erilaz, NukleoN
    same here, no creature design.

    ATLAS2900
Your nick is in CAPS!!! REJECTED! hehe, no, just joking...but still rejected...it's the same criteria as i wrote for Reality Forge (char/unit), but you have to work more on the presentation - it seems that you rushed your entry (strange cropping, not cleaning lines etc), i don't talk about skills, because i can't judge regarding the skills, it's not fair. But if you break rules, you have to come up with something which will straighten it out.

    michamachtlos
You're better than what you showed with this entry. If you don't have time just skip the round

    close to rejection:

    Reality Forge
Your entry is close to a character. Even if it is not a single char but a unit, which is not describing a creature in terms of a species, it's showing a unit...i will accept it this time, because you put much effort in it and i can't deny that it's technically and design-wise top-notch

    special note:

    White Wolf
    Only 1 image please!!!

    ThrillzillA
your rendering skills are very good...but why wasting your effort with a poor design...actually it's an ordinary bat with no interesting differences...pity...

phew, what a bunch of work...didn't read all concepts in detail, scanned the obvious ones...

Here are my favs, from which i will choose the one i vote for:

    great designs
    AztcFireFlower, Dr Midnight

Dr. Midnight don't vote on yourself dude.

First of all. Congrats everyone making it to the Poll

I voted voor Jackass. Although his pose was on the side I find it a great creature with nice colorings. My intuition goes for him.

Lol, Dr Midnight, nice vote hahaha.
A beautiful first vote indeed XD

    I voted for Tom Garden.
Well, first of all, I love the creature alot haha.
The main creature looks very good and the overall picture just fits, no comments for that.

I wish you had spend more time on the environment though. Especially when you chose to make it a big picture.
It just feels a bit empty. Either put more work in it or keep it smaller I would say.

    Furthermore:

Helzon and Supervlieg almost had my vote. Supervlieg for the great rendering and Helzon for the awesome creature.

    o and,
    Thrillzilla ! Hiya ! XD

hey most presedents vote for themselfes aswell. hehehe but in this case it's not about winning(or is it?)...

voted for supervlieg, great partisipator and as fossybar said, great rendering. also very funny- "Its origin is largely unknown but some crossbreeding between pigs and a large predatory birds is expected." Whahahahahha

and BTW dark sephiroth, it's JakkaS NOT JACKASS

    Yay thanks B!

My vote went to Spraynation, just because his scene was most complete and well rendered.

I have feedback for a few of you in the other thread. Some comments got lost while I tried to post during the closing of the thread.

Supervelig, Simonl, Spray Nation, Pose, Tom Garden, JakkaS, Rawwad You guys really made this a mind screw of a decision, which involved numbers in a hat, a professional bingo caller, and some good old fashioned brain wracking (with blood pouring out of the ears). Thank you for the pain and the joy of these stellar pieces.
    Honorable mentions: AztcFireFlower, brokk, 0kelvin
brokk, your skills are really coming along the progress from your first entry in Cow to now is something to be proud of. Congrats man.
0kelvin, always thinkin outside the box...and this one is no exception, awesome sense of humor, and skillfully rendered.
AztcFireFlower: I like how the form of the head followed the function. The stance of the body is a bit awkward, but the rendering is excellent.

So ultimately, Spray Nation got my vote. It was the sum total of all the parts.

Supervlieg: Thanks for taking the time to crit. I appreciate that and will work on that piece.

Reality Forge: Bro if you just dropped the spear and reworked the leg you would have had me.
As always those that entered have my respect, takes huevos to pony up and put a piece in.
    Cheers!

I gave my vote to the most unique concept. I had a tough choice between Helzon, Supervlieg, Reality Forge, Tom Garden, JakkaS, redhelert, and Fozzybar. Tide's and Mr. Blonde's were pretty entertaining as well. Haha, there's a continuing trend here of predator's attacking bunnies for some reason (from seeing previous C.O.W.'S)
    best design: Helzon
    best color: JakkaS
    best concept: Reality Forge

I gave it to JakkaS for the really great presentation. Helzon and Reality Forge were up there though!

i voted for tom garden, i liked how he presented his creature.

for everyone who want to see a more finished version of my critter, pleas go check out my sketchbook.

My entry is a strange worm like insect, wich hides and lives inside huge desert storms. Some say that it's not hiding inside storms but causing em, however there is no proof. A matter of fact is that it will hunt and kill everything foolish enough to "enter" the storm.

I gave Rawwad my vote; been reading about dinosaurs and its fun to see someone postulating dinos that may never have fossilised. I like the motion too, and the sinewy muscles visible in the rendering.

Supervlieg: Very cute and scary at the same time, you were one of my favs. Beak seemed a bit huge to be practical :p, but still sweet.

SimonL: Beatiful critter; the mouth reminds me of one from a Gnomon tute I saw once. Skin very well rendered but the background looks a little incomplete is all.

Tom Garden: Very scary animal there, I would have liked to see the whole thing tightened up a bit but the mood and the concept I do really like.

JakkaS: Without a doubt I think this is the best rendered peice. But I never was a fan of mammalian critters :p

This was my first C.O.W and it was great fun. Thanks to everyone for comments and competition!

I'm feeling the need for a bit of whimsy today, so I am going to vote for redehlert. It's a cute creature, and a funny concept. I really like the little set-up illustrations.

    Tough vote.

Supervlieg gets mine. Nice design and great execution, lots of character

Helzon - I love it! Nice design, great colours, awesome lighting and brushwork. The subtle internal glow is especially nice!

Tom Garden - Nice critter and amazingly atmospheric!

Jakkas - Beautiful work as always. My only crit is that the main picture looks a little stiff in comparison to the smaller pics.

Dreckster - Nice critter design and nice brushwork. The yellow of the critter is a bit strong though, and could stand being broken up a bit.

Aztcfireflower- Beautiful critter! Nice distinctive design, nice linework. Colours look a little rushed, but that's getting picky.

Michael Jaecks - THere's a whole lot of really nice stuff going on in this picture, but I think the centaur body gets in the way. THe head is really nice, as is the tail and the patterns on the body, but the humanoid torso kinda makes it all look glued together.

RedEhlert - Really cute critter, lovely body language, but it looks like it's chasing toasters!

Rawwad - I really like the dino. Plausible anatomy and the start of some nice skin detail, but he would have benefited from some more rendering

Reality Forge - Nice lighting and beautiful skin textures on the abdomen!

Hwango - Beautiful skin textures and colours, but he looks a little fly-swatted

SprayNation - Great rendering, beautiful colours and great narrative! Only quibble is the spiky hair on the foreground tentacle which could do with being a bit more varied (very minor quibble)

I don't even know who the hell I'm gonna vote for, so I'll just go through and do my comment/critique thing and let my subconscious do the decision making for me.

Mr Blonde- Nice idea! It's obvious that inspiration struck you. Sweet camel study you posted, too.
Hwango- I like your creature's legs. Nice neck, too.
Bryno- You captured that dark, supersticious Africa look very well. So, let me get this straight, he can't digest bones, so he just assimilates them into his own body? Weird.
smoscar- It's a nice idea, but you need to work on anatomy and contrast. Add some deeper shadows and some brighter highlights to your creature, and study the musculature of creatures that resemble yours. For example, its hind limbs somewhat resemble those of a greyhound, so you could do an image search for some greyhound reference, or better yet, observe one in person, if at all possible. Just keep at it!
fughi form yuggoth- It's a good idea, and you obviously thought about its biology. However - it hurts me to be this blunt - it just isn't drawn very well. The only thing I can give you is the cliched "practice, practice, practice."
Kujo- Cool idea! Bone-mimicking creatures are tough to draw. The foot that's holding down its prey is pretty iffy, though.
Michael Jaecks- Once again, it was cool to see the progression of this piece. That was true of a lot of the drawings in this round. All I can say is that I like all the bits and pieces of various animals, and if the pygmy desert demon is as bad as you say it is, I wouldn't want to meet the regular-sized one.
depleteD- Could you give us more of an explanation about how shedding its skin makes it invisible? That left me stumped. Good drawing.
Helzon- Excellent drawing. The description is very well-written too, which is always a big plus.
AztcFireFlower- What a marvelous head! This was another drawing that was nice to watch progress. The only crit I have is that the stripes could have been more carefully drawn.
Supervlieg- This picture made me happy. I've been wanting to see some unlikely bird evolutions for a while now. We have diving and swimming birds, so why not some four-legged crawling ones? Excellent creature design. The only thing that's bothering me is this "crossbreeding with pigs" business. What up with that?
KaWaii- This is a weird idea. Dettachable plant balls? It doesn't seem very plausable to me, but then again, nature has come up with weirder things. Nice creativity.
Dr Midnight- I love its little green eyes peeking over its body. The four killer tongues would make Wayne Barlowe proud. (Alluding, of course, to the arrowtongues from Expedition)
Tyde- Too monochromatic, and the creature is pretty much featureless. There's no interest. Sorry.
SimonL- What a great picture! The subtlety of the rendering is beautiful. It's a shame that you didn't do more with those toes, though. That's my only crit.
SprayNation- Very nice drawing, and I always like it when people take the time to classify their creatures into existing phyla.
Reality Forge- Yeah, it's almost a character, but it's a great drawing and an awe-inspiring concept description. It's obvious you put a great deal of thought into this species.
Pose- Cool drawing. The idea of scientists unearthing and reviving this beast is fairly ominous.
Brokk- Nothing to crit here. Cool.
Blue Tiger- I like it. It looks like a big, killer sloth (or a Kodiak Marmoset from Ren and Stimpy). The colored version doesn't seem finished, though.
Alayna- Nice idea and presentation. My only crit has to do with the creature's anatomy. I think it would make more sense and be more visually pleasing to have its limbs shorter and stockier, rather than long with flippers at the end. Nice rendering of the desert environment
Dreckster- Here's what I was gonna say: "More colors! Where's the description??" But then I looked in your sketchbook, and there it was. It's a shame that the final version didn't make it in time. But hey, at least this version made it to the poll!
Tom Garden- This is awesome. To bring up Wayne Barlowe again (I'm obviously a big fan), this reminds me of his Leviathan painting, in that it shows a huge creature with a tiny human element that isn't noticeable at first. My only crit is that the wings of the main creature don't seem quite finished.
White Wolf- Funny description of your killer quicksand chihuahua. I can't say I approve of what he seems to be doing to that poor skeleton's arm, though...
JakkaS- Even if you hadn't put your name on it, I think everyone would still have known who did it. It has the creativity of design and vividness of color that are your trademarks. Very good.
redehlert- Cute critters. I like the nice, simple pencil renderings.
ThrillZilla- Its hind legs are kinda awkwardly drawn and there's nothing really distinguishing it as a sand hunter. Other than that, nice painting.
rawwad- Again, you prove yourself as a force to be reckoned with. Excellent creature design and sense of movement. Plus, made up dinosaurs are my favorite. Perhaps it would have benefited from some more colors, but it looks great just as it is. Also, he reminds me of this dino doodle I sketched out a year or so ago.
    C.O.W. - #054: Sand Hunter - Voting!
Because it's not only a great drawing in itself, but also reminds me of one of my own favorite creatures, I think you may have just gotten my vote. Haven't decided yet, though.
Fozzybar- Nice face and long, whip-like tail.
Okelvin- I think you may just have the most creative and orginal idea here! I certainly never would have thought of a sand trap in a golf course. Great story, great creature, and great humorous depiction.

Aaarrggghhh! I still can't decide! Oh well. I'll vote soon enough.
My own too-late entry will be put up in my sketchbook, if anyone wants to take a gander.
