My name is Rick. Im a 17 year old Florida State University Freshman currently, but I really want to go to Ringling for Illustration and Computer Graphics. My girlfriend is going in this year as a photography major. I am thinking that maybe if I work on my art alot this year, I can perhaps get a transfer...if accepted, of course.
My forte in art is mostly conceptual art, anything ranging from warriors, soldiers, weapons, mecha, airship designs, and other vehicles. I like to do alot of modernish art, like soldiers or cars, and sci-fi art, like futuristic soldiers, weapons, and machines. I also have drawn fighters that use old fashioned weapons, but I dont like the fantasy genre unless i get to put a bit of my own spice in.
I also do comic books based on a set of animal characters. Its meant to be a funny strip, and in the past Ive done 65 4-5 page "episodes". In other words, they are lengthy [I draw about 20 boxes per page on average], not the three-box web comics. Ill post some of them up sometime.
I describe my art as American-comic book style with anime influence, since I started with anime and drifted more into realistic stuff.
I have decided on this SB mostly looking for critique from the other members of these forums, as I have seen some pretty awesome stuff on here. I think my areas of improvement may be in anatomy and dynamic poses, mainly. I can draw a person but I couldnt draw him doing a backflip or throwing a baseball or swinging a sword for my life.
I like to use references right now, either photographs or sometimes other people's art. I want to drift away from that.
Without furthur ado, I present to you my sketchbook: heavy critique encouraged, links to other people's stuff [when helpful or related] welcome.

Starting Off: Older Art
An idea that I just had one day...looked cool in my head, so I decided to put it on paper.
A character from Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. Thought I would give him a shot in a realisticish form...notice how undynamic it is.
A character of mine. He has alot of backstory, I wont bore you with it here...reference used.
A WW2 soldier I thought Id draw. I love the military. One of my own favorites, but once again...undynamic. "Old picture" filter applied for effects.
March Across The Desert
An unfinished Iraqi War pic. Inspired by a scene in the movie Jarhead.
A little off topic, a graffiti piece I did.
Same deal, different design.
A crazy one-man killing machine. Character inspired by a Fall Out Boy song title, but not by the actual song.
Another of my finest moments in art up to this point. One of my first "scene" drawings [I usually just do single people posing...I like this better though]. I got about 30 favorites on dA for this one...
Two secret agents clad in shiny leather with big weapons. What's not to love?
A mecha of mine. Like her?
Based on someone. Thats all you need to know.
The Alley Catz
Characters from the "funny"ish comic I mentioned earlier. A whole gang of em.
An FMA pic. One of my only computer-colored attempts.
A demon concept of mine for a story [the one involving Alloran from earlier]. His name is actually "Scary Demon" spelt backwards...heheh...
Its an F-16.
An oldish design of a character. He is in the same story as Alloran...same universe, I mean.
Older Fukai, Colored
An older picture of a colored-pencil version of Fukai. I kind of still like this one, even though it is primitive...
One of my best mechs.
I think I got this idea from someone else but its still my drawing..whatever, its old anyway.
A photoshop colored Vash pic I did. Pose taken from the manga.
Centaur Beast Thing
I dont know what it is...looks to be loosely based on an Andalite.
I think I took this pose from the manga but Im not sure.
A character from my comic Total Chaos!.
Hope I gave you all your fill...this is all already completed stuff. From here on out I will attempt to update every time I do a new piece. Hopefully, it will be more often than I think...heheh.
Please give me crits and comments on this stuff though.

well i can't say much, i'm not brilliant at critique @ sketchbooks, i'll just say if you want to advance, then i suggest you drop the copying of the official art of other cartoons and get right down to anatomy and so forth. loomis' books, bridgman.. all standard anatomy fodder whatever. buy. learn it inside out.. draw from life. a lot.
also no i'm pretty sure that picture of haruko you copied came from the official artwork of the anime

Yeah man...I dont really copy official art like I did a couple years ago, now I like to use photographic references for perspective...but I dont really see a problem with that.
Ive seen Andrew Loomis's books, he is really good...cant find them in stores anywhere, though.

man you got some great ideas in here. the children watching the mushroom cloud is especially powerful IMHO.
Try and do alot of practice sketches from life, and some anatomy books. You've got great ideas, but need some more on your technique to back it up ^^
Wow 17 and in college? That's how old I was too Hope you get into ringling! I was accepted but i couldn't afford it ::sniff:: But I'm veryhappy with the school I went to instead, and the person i met there teheh

Nice SB! 17 and in college? Wow.
As much enjoyable as drawing anime is, I'd say start studying real-life anatomy now. After studying the basics over and over and over you'll find that drawing other things will be a LOT easier and a LOT better."Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most." --Mark Twain

Angelo Dukakis is a character of mine from a story idea I had...basically, Angels are aliens who created humankind on Earth and thats where the Angel/God theory came from. Works with religion, but is alot cooler. An Angel comes to Earth in the early 1900s and gives a warning that humans ignore, and return in the new millenium to wipe out their failed creation, sparking global war with a superpowered, superintelligent race.
Mech Pencil, sketchbook paper, blending stick for some shadows...sorry its so bad all.
