Silvestri's Sketchbook- need help with colors and such!!

Hello all! I've been watching the site for quite a long time and have finally decided to jump in with some sketches from my workbook. I'm based in Seattle with only a real basic art education. I'm trying to teach myself the rest of what i don't know (although I do remember everything I know) or wait for an opportunity to return to school.
My sketches are mostly done in ink on Bristol board. I like not having the option to erase. It keeps my mind moving, the sketches quick and stops me from getting hung up on the small details to begin with.

Let me know what you think..I love constructive criticism. I think it's about the fastest way to learn and grow new ideas.

Hey another artist from Seatown Nice start to an SB. Your insects are cool looking. On your anatomy, the creature holding the staff, the right arm doesn't seem to have the correct form. The bicep doesn't curve like that. I really like the designs. As most members here will tell you study from life. Get some anatomy books and start reading Please post more of those wicked creatures!

    Wasp more stuffs

Thanx Darkchild. I love the Seatown..I live just south of it.
I knew the anatomy was a bit off but i still struggle with that area (amoung others). I'm an AIS grad so I still go in when i can to catch lifedrawing sessions. Always does seem to improve my work for the next set of drawings.

and now..Some batches of heads for quick studies..Some dudes and a couple of little devil dudes..

(can anyone give me a hint on how to post title, image, title, image etc...?)

Nice work! I like the faces. Work more on the anatomy and so forth. Just keep posting dude. To get a title, press "go advanced". There you can do most things.

    No pain, no gain.

Kaktuzlime and Katzgod thanks. I'll keep working on my anatomy for sure. Got some good reference books but it always seems that drawing from life helps the most. I'll try to post some those today along with some of my carttony type fliterings.

    Life drawings

Heres some of my life drawings from some recent sessions. Most of them are two minutes and under.

I apologize about the picture size. I'll get that under control and fixed here damn quick.....

Cool bugs they remind me of the starship troopers movie, but the guy with staff is your best yet from my view. The designs on the ends of the staffs are coolness, well i hope to see more.

Hey, nice work with the last several batch of works. I really love the creatures. I'm glad to see you do some anatomy studies. Great work with everything. You really know how to fill up a piece of paper Plus you have a wide range of topics that you draw. You have been busy since I last visited. I going to answer you question here as well as in my SB. I use parchment paper. I think it's called Astroparche 60lb vellum finish. My normal sketching tools only consist of two objects, a 6h pencil and a White Prismacolor pencil. I know that a 6h pencil isn't very dark, but I play with the values in Photoshop. The actual color of the parchment is a light yellow but after I darken the values in PS the page becomes more brown. I hope this helps, keep on with your awesome work I'll be looking forward to your next batch.

You've got a good sense for creatures. I like where you are going with them conceptually. I'd be very interested in seeing a more complete piece by you.

Darkchild, Blue...glad you like the creature stuff. I'll work on some more finished black and whites to post here in the next couple of days. I don't do much color, just cause i'm not good at it yet, but i suppose that is a reason to get on practicing it. Thanks again for the comments!

Thought I'd include a couple of metal sculptures I've worked on recently. Just starting using some of my weldign and metal work skills to do some projects for work (university of washington medical center). These were used in part of a "heart of the matter" themed display. I believe they will be going into permanent display.
The peice with the rose in the center is diced stainless 2" round bar. I shaped the petals and welded them together then heat treated them to get a blue tint in the center and gold tint on the outer edges (color may not show well here). The other one is made from sheet tin and rivited together, inspired by the tin man. Both shapes fit into the guidelines of what they were looking for.

Both are awesome, but I love the top one more. Either the whole piece is slightly crooked or the right is shaped slightly different than the left. Maybe I need my eyes checked again. Either way great job!

Darkchild- Thanks, the heart on the top is mounted a little wonky (i didn't do the mounting) and altough it was a symmetrical design it wasn't exact. I've got a mask i made for a different project I'll try to show next week. Got to get some pics of it.
Frank- thanks!! checked out your sketchbook as well...really nice stuff.
