    Continuing Challenge; Tie vs. NoŽ

    Hello everybody,

    Tie and myself were chatting yesterday and thought of doing a quick drawing challenge, 1,5 hours later our first two challenge entries were done, from the topic "wild princess".
    We both liked the idea of doing a challenge almost every day (at least for as long as we have vacation and are not ůn vacation )
    So that's why I'm starting this topic.
    We will just post our entries for the new topic we made up (topic suggestions are very much wanted by the way )
    We would appreciate it if you would react to us which of the two entries you liked best, and why. We'll just count votes.

    So please reply to this topic telling us who you think won and give some crits!

    The second entries will follow later today.

    Love
    Marleen

    rightright.

    2nd challenge

    subject: "fairy hunter"
    medium: photoshop and pencil/paper allowed
    time: 10 minutes at the start to plan, then 1hr 30mins.

    tie's 'gay duck thing'

    lol.

    i didnt get to do as much as i wanted, because marleen had already finished hers by the one hour mark, and then {very cruelly} cut the deadline down to 1hr 15mins. and then when i had finally finished it {on time, i might add}, i put the border round it, added the text, AND WINDOWS FUCKING FROZE. so i rebooted and i lost 15-20 minutes of work. but lovely marleen allowed me to do the rest and so here it is.

    the general idea is that it's built for running at high speeds and springy jumps. we all know that faires are speedy, tricky little things, so this thing runs through forests at top speed, jumping when necessary and reaching out with its long hands to catch the little buggers, the colours are for camouflage {though who needs camo when you run like a cheetah}. it forms a brown, tree-bark like skin on its front, to protect itself as it crashes through the forests, running through sharp stingy leaves and branches that it is moving too quick to see.

    i wanted to make it look scary so i based the head off this shark. obviously i shouldnt have chosen such a silly looking shark because now my thing looks like a duck

    noŽ's 'fuler'

    The "Fuler" is a creature living on the little secret spots of the earth
    where fairy's can be found lingering in green bushes and flowery meadows.
    These "secret spots" (which haven't been discovered by humans yet)
    are mostly in the middle of the jungle, up in trees and in the mud.
    The fuler lives from little bugs and bees, but from all the insect like creatures
    living on these spots, the fairy is the most preferred food of the Fuler.
    To catch his prey he has 5 extendable tentacles which are coverede with a
    slimy substance. When a fairy, or other insect touches that substance, it will
    slowly get paralized and won't be able to escape certain death.

    Nice concept Tie!
    But one thing doesn't look right, and that's the placing of the black splotches on the creature's head/shoulders/ thigs(?upper leg portion) If they should represent shadows, there should be black splotch on the creature's torso too, and stronger, casted shadows beneath the chests, on the lower legs , and on the creature's neck(because the way the splotches are placed right now, assuming they are shadows, mind you, the light source would be obviously behind the creature, and somewhat from below.)
    If they are some skin pegmentation, they shouldn't look like that, because right now, they are completely destroying the feeling for volume.(now i sound like my proffesor )
    From conceptional point, the neck seems too humanlike, and wouldn't suit a swift predator, adept at catching small, fast moving prey with his mouth.
    And pls consider some enormous fangs, right now it looks like if a fairy encounters that carnivor, it would get away only with post-traumatic shock and serious case of gooeiness.

    {though who needs camo when you run like a cheetah}
    Uhmmm, cheetas..? Those brownish spots aren't for good looks y'know!

    To summarise things up: pay more attention to lighting, fangs, and i just love to blab.

    Done with my duty here, on to bed now!

    (see previous post of Tie)

    That's my entry for the topic "Fairy Hunter"
    I think it took us 1h and 15 minutes, and we had 10 mins of sketching and planning in the beginning.

    Oh Sean, if you can post my image and description in your post it would be nice It's just a little easier to see that way.
    I like how yours turned out Will crit more severely later, when I am a bit more awake.

    Love
    Marleen

    cheetahs stalk thier prey in the long grass, before they give chase. my animal thing just runs around 24/7 i guess {it looks a bit too stupid to walk around at normal speeds}

    the shadow thing could arise from a {sort of} problem with my monitor. it's a dell LCD, and colours appear a lot brighter than they should {on default settings and even when tweaked} so i can't see colours like tan very easily, they just show up as white. the 'black splotches' are actually brown, and quite clearly so {but it seems only on my monitor..?}

    and if i were to add just fangs, well, that would look extremely stupid on it and and be unpractical. fangs are generally for tearing up large pieces of meat, and fairies are ever so tiny. i will however, rework the head, take off all the brown parts on the body, and add in a whole set of teeth {not just fangs} when i come back to this design later. i agree that the neck is too humanlike.. i was just unsure how to draw an other neck when the thing looks of a vaguely humanoid shape

    thanks very much for your comments!

    Heh, i adjusted the contrast of my monitor, and the "splotches" appeared brown just as you say! ^^ much better that way! (still far from perfection tho )

    Noe: Gooey tentacles and fairyes, yes! But the legs don't look good, all of em. Don't darken that much on the lower part of the creature's body, because now one can't tell which leg is in front, and which is behind. (well, we can, but because of the forshortening)And what happens to the fairyes after they are stuck to the slimy appendages? I mean how the creature ingests them, coz right now it isn't very clear. Or maybe it catches em with different intentions? j/k
