DEADLINE
SUNDAY, JULY 16th
The way the deadline works: if deadline is on a Sunday and your image is posted on that Sunday 23:59 your local time it's a good entry.
In fact - as long there is Sunday somewhere on the planet your entry is ok. I will make the poll sometimes Monday afternoon my time (GMT +2) yet i'll have a look at the last entries.
--------------------------
Theodios - Sci-Fi - Orthodox Patriarch of the New World
So much time has passed since the world destroyed itself. So much time in the dark.
Theodios was impressively young when he started preaching - at 12 he had already mature audience. At 14 he was praised in more then 5 of the new cities.
He is the one who brought faith and united all of the west cities in the new world. He is brave, wise, guided by The Lord and ... ready to fight.
The new orthodox symbols are everywhere.. and Theodios is the new prophet.
The "Governments" have a hard time accepting his power.. he knows it.. he is ready.
Now... concept!
[edit] - make sure you insert the orthodox elements. entries may not be taken to the poll if they don't follow the topic.
we don;t want just another generic character with a fancy name. see the "non spanish toreador" thread for a BAD example.
[edit 2] - it is EASTERN ORTHODOX (russian, greek, etc...) - becouse... it's rich and unused.

Final.

In a post-apocalyptic world where humanity cowered on the brink of extinction, Theodios became a powerful icon. To the people, he was hope. To darker powers, he was an influential puppet. The deities of hell, seeking a way to end mankind, manipulated the once good-hearted Theodios to their will. Theodios was hungry for power, and the dark ones took advantage of that. Mortals, no matter how holy, are still susceptible to corruption.
With malice in his corrupted heart, Theodios approaches the Government buildings. With no leaders, the likes of mankind cannot hope to survive the onslaught of the dark gods.

I'm in! Same as Ryn, just dropping by so I don't pusss-out.
FINAL- cutting it close on this one. I know I'm screwed based on the line-up, but I'm proud I finished.

Theodios started his life as a religious leader from a young age. Those around him soon noticed his wisdom in theological matters. He soon became a world-wide religious icon. As age took it’s toll, Theodios fell back on technology in order to extend his life, to “Complete what I was sent here to do.” However, in light of his recent, and seemingly unnecessary technological enhancements, both his followers and the government are at a loss as to his next move.

Do we still need a desription even though we were given this?:

WIP

You suffer the spiritual disease of self.
You paralyze yourselves with choice.
Surrender it and be free of your shackles.
Wage the war within. Find the light inside the darkness,
And be saved.
Oblio: I want to ask before I take this further... is there a particular religion you want this character based in? Orthodoxy, to me at least, suggests degree of adherence to each religions own traditional writings... each can regard itself as orthodox and everyone else as heretical. I'm going (based on the sci-fi/new prophet description) on the assumption that this is a new religion that considers Theodios' teachings orthodox. Just checking.

maybeeeee I'll try this...

Well, I'll try to squeeze my hat in the ring...

At 14 he was praised in more then 5 of the new cities. He is the one who brought faith and united all of the west cities in the new world. He is brave, wise, guided by The Lord and ... ready to fight. And fight He did. The battle's were fierce and long but Theodios prevailed. He grew old. He lived a long life. Then as we all do he died.
But his followers couldn't accept that. Using Science they brought him back.He was their guiding star. But He remembers his death. He remembers judgement. And he remembers the paradise that was stolen from him. All he wants to do is go home . But his followers have other plans.
So yeah. first of all i did the first sketch "kinda going for an off base pink floyd the wall kinda look" then the character gets changed to eastern orthadox. So I decided to do a little revision. also i have noticed no one really seems to give a shit about the cartooning style so I guess i'll conform.

El Nuevo
New to this forum, but I have been lurking for a while...this looks like a good topic to cut my teeth. Will try hard to make the deadline and not embarass myself.
Arrrrgh...very dissapointed that I didn't make the deadline, I'll try to finish anyway and post in a separate thread.

more info about the topic added in the first post.
- thx Neorepto for the question.

Dominus....really likin' that quick style!

NeoRepto, love that initial sketch. The combination of the angle and the cropping of the vid-screen is a really nice touch.
-
-
Hmmmm. If its eastern orthodox, then I don't think my sketch works. Too 1984, totalitarian with the telescreen. I'm glad asked, because that's what I think of when someone starts talking about future religions.
You know Oblio, if you wanted someone to really do this right, they'd have to paint up their entry like a Russian icon. But if someone attempts that... no crits on the anatomy distortion... and no crits on it looking too flat. Although they would have to master the art of gold leaf in Photoshop .gif)
edit: THANKS Lord Dubu. Funny you were writing that as I was writing that I didnt think it fit the revised topic description.
I'd like to use the sketch and was planning to extend it horizontally with more telescreens of the guys shadowy face, but I just don't think of eastern orthodox as lording over people quite in the same way. I was originally thinking of something sort of CyberBaptist. or something like the Christian Bale movie Equilibrium where all the Tetragrammaton Clerics are crazy skilled martial artists... none of that is very eastern orthodox.
Oh well. Time to pop Francis Ford Copolla's Dracula into the DVD player...

I dunno. I get the impression from reading Doestoevsky that Eastern orthodoxy was no stranger to the corruption that power brings.

I've never read Doestoevsky. Can you elaborate a little, point me in the direction of what you've read?
When I think of religion really lording over the masses, I get a real baptist or protestant sort of idea. Evangelical ministeries... messages getting beamed onto your TV or computer whether or not you're looking for it. None of the other major religions seem to me to have such a rigorous commercial advertising budget... I dunno. It is a future religion after all. It could go anywhere.

That's kind of ironic to me, given that baptists never ruled the Roman empire, or controlled Europian governments as did the catholics of the middle ages. As to Dostoevsky and eastern orthodoxy, one of the books central themes is the role of religion and government and how very far the church has gone (in pursuit of power) away from Christ's actual message. If you can find it online, the "Grand Inquisitor" passage of "Brother's Karamozov" is a great satirical summary of that argument.
All that being said, you're concepting a futuristic incarnation of eastern-orthodoxy. One born in an age with more advanced technology than the old-school version. I'd say the traditions of your new orthodoxy should reflect a glimmer of the old roots with a nice 2.0 infusion of modern media... after all what better method to get your message out to the new masses quickly than using the tools those who failed before you didn't have.
IMHO anyway

I'm in... at least I hope so
