    Deverion's Sketchbook [12.20.06]

    Hey guys

Ive been lurking at CA for a long time, and i finally decided to actually post, so my first post is gonna be the start of a new sketchbook. A little background on me - Im an illustration major, and I plan to start this fall at the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design. Most of what ill be posting here is going to be practice sketches and drawings that i do in my spare time, but i thought it would be cool to use this thread to document my progression when i start my studies later this year.

Anyways, here are the first pages from my sketchbook, and also 2 concept characters that im still working on. Crits and comments are more than welcome. Ill post more once i get off my ass and scan some more pages from my sketchbook.

I used references for a few of these, and others are from life

Liking the style. Digging the rendering on the first 6 pieces. Great character concepts but the poses are kinda stiff. Slight anatomy issues with the second character. Definitely love that Skeletor looking staff on the second character. Keep on posting.

Thanks for the comments darkchild. I think the way to get rid of the stiffness when i do future characters designs is to just loosen up. I sometimes get carried away doing detail in a certain part, and forget to stay loose and take a step back and look at what im working on as a whole. That, and I also need do a whole lot more of anatomy studies. Ill post more soon

Smitherines - wow i dont know how i didnt realize the alignment of the eyes was off on the sketch; i took the image down for now because i want to scan the re-sketch, as i corrected it after you pointed the problem out.

Well ive been really busy the past week so i haven't had much time to work on studies/life drawing. I just started working on them today though so I'll have some pages scanned soon.

Here are a couple of character concept sketches, and also a b&w illustration i finished a few weeks ago, i thought id post them on here and maybe get some feedback.

Im also working on some studies of various interesting trees i discovered (i dont have much to work with, but at least ill be starting classes soon and will have plenty of figure drawing and life studies to work on ) Ill post those next. Also i scanned a drawing i did using a reference photo i found of an eagle harpy. More soon.

Wow...it's been an incredibly long time since I updated this sketchbook.

I've been so busy with art school, but I've still been practicing and drawing as often as possible. Good thing is I have alot of work from my first semester, and even though I haven't learned many new things yet, I'm getting practice with alot of materials which is great.

Anyways, I thought I'd put some of my work from my first semester in here. I'll post some of my sketches and drawings I've been doing in my free time soon as well.

Very nice updates here! You seem to be coming along with your studies quite well. I can't believe members don't write in here more. Really like this one: http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m...ches/harpy.jpg

No real big suggestions other than to keep studying!

    Cool Stuff.

While those pictures that are drawn from life are generally good, the ones from your imagination are lacking in contrapposto. Adding the contrapposto will give the subject a sense of weight and realism.

darkchild - thanks very much, I really appreciate your support

Kougansharde - you are absolutely right, now that I've had the opportunity to draw the figure from life in my classes, I'm going to try to incorporate what I've learned when I'm doing imaginative stuff. Of course, I need much more practice and more time spent studying contrapposto/anatomy, but hopefully I'll get there some day

MY favourite so far is the psychedelic line falcon, or whatever it is.
I agree with the others that the poses of the characters look a little stiff but overall nice pencil sketches.
The colors on the small dick man live drawings are very promising.

    I´ll be back, Wolf.

A tutor once said to me: "Let your mind go!" and it didn´t come back.

Dreamworker - Thankyou. I agree, my characters can tend to be stiff sometimes, but I'm working on it.

bbwolf - Thanks, the falcon was for one of my 2d design classes. I've gotta get rid of this nasty habit of making my imaginitive figures too rigid. It's weird because I tend to do that only when I'm not drawing from life or from a reference. And with the "small dick man" (hahahaha) I was trying to approach using watercolors differently, using a temperature shift with the color palette I decided on.

Anyways, I thought I'd do another update today, here are a few pages from my sketchbook. These are just some (unfinished) character designs I worked on, off and on over the course of a week. As always, comments and crits are very welcome.

Didn't really get a chance to draw much today, but I did start this little sketch. I looked at various pictures of horses for quite awhile and struggled with the proportions; however what was even harder was getting the horse/rider proportional ratio correct

Oh well, I'll keep working on it. I am also trying to spend more time with the line drawing before getting into rendering, which is one of my big weaknesses right now. Comments & crits are very welcome.

that page is marvelous, what meida is that?
my only real crit is to make your lines longer when hatching, and to thik of the form when rendering, but otherwise, keep up the good work

Thanks Blanquish. That was just a page of 5 minute studies with ink wash. Thanks also for the suggestions, I'll keep those in mind while I'm working in my sketchbook.

I did end up finishing the sketch from my last post, but unfortunately I'm kind of in a rush right now and have to leave in an hour or so. I'm travelling with my family for the holidays, so I will post it (along with sketches I do while I'm gone) next week when I get back.
