Description: Overnight this giant monolith appeared. One can only assume it is alien in origin. People are glued to their radios as the zepplins go in for a closer look!

well, I am sure everyone knows this already, but on the chance anyone is unclear - and for the sake of trying to be helpful, here is a definition (or 3) :

    mon·o·lith n.

    1. A large block of stone, especially one used in architecture or sculpture.
    2. Something, such as a column or monument, made from one large block of stone.
    3. Something suggestive of a large block of stone, as in immovability, massiveness, or uniformity.

I guess I won´t participate after all - but it´s mainly for technical issues with uploading and new internet connection on other computer. Good topic though!

Hey Red Rook, somehow your damaged monolith also lost some of it´s contrast and clarity. Besides, looks like only the flags and ropes got damaged, but not the rock.

you realise you cannot re-use a painting you did for something else, i cannot accept this if it was originally done for a dsg.

I think He/she meant to say EOW, and put in DSG by mistake...I hang out at DSG, and I don't remember seeing it. maybe I missed it .

BTW Mr.rook, did you see the TD2 entry withthe octopus helmet? I thought of you instantly.....

The majority of the runes were indecipherable, but they could hold some clue as to the monoliths purpose before it was plunged into the ocean so long ago.

    Yarrrr!

    E.O.W Round 29: Monolith
    Story to come!

    Edit: Story!

    Joe's Basement:

Over the unusually wet spring the basement in Joe's humble abode had become quite flooded. The repair crew said that due to improper grading in his tiny backyard the foundation was in dire need of repair. Joe didn't think much of it, he didn't really have the money to repair it anyways. After they left he retired to his favorite easy chair to contemplate which relative of his to bother for a loan or whether or not the bank would approve him. The chair had always helped him think, but he also had a tendency to take sudden naps in it as well. He was of course, unaware that where he currently sat was one of the spots severly weakened by the flood damage. Just as he was beginning to doze off, the floor that had previously endured the worst of flood had finally seen it's last breath. He, along with his easy chair, fell straight through the first floor. There was a loud thud as the falling came to an end and much to his surpise he was not in his basement - he had in fact fallen straight through even the basement subflooring into a natural cave; at least it seemed to be naturally formed - however this was no ordinary cave. It was enormous, probably the size of the entire quaint town in which Joe lived, and if that wasn't enough it was lit almost as if this was where the sun had come to hide after the evening. Past the distant rock formations and a field of magnificent wildflowers, the like of which had never been seen above ground - Joe saw a massive rock, a monolith that could not possibly be born of nature.

My first ever EOW sketch; Im new here. I have seen many artists put their sketches on DeviantART, inspired/ for Conceptart. I decided this would be good "inspiration" to get better at digital painting, especially with all of the different DSG's and EOW's. Any help is appreciated. I have trouble adding detail as you can tell. Photoshop CS2, 45 Mins.(I kept going back to add things)

    E.O.W Round 29: Monolith

*Imageshack might have changed the values a bit.

Description: Many people believe the recently "placed" footsteps were from a mysterious being, or some type of non- human, especially since nothing will remove them. Scientific evidence proves that no human can be placed at the base of this monolith, and then be picked up; the footsteps are too close to the structure for any type of aircraft to place the being.

FunkytownP nice , but there's some wonky perspective present there.

The monolith is at a 45 degree angle to the city in front of it. You used the vanishing points of the buildings (which at are 0 degrees) to define the monoliths sides too! ooops. Here's a best guess inference from your city, what the vp for the monolith should be.

    Final:

    E.O.W Round 29: Monolith

It was built as a symbol of peace, by a race long forgotten.
It stands now weathered, chipped, and alone.
It will one day be adopted by visitors from far away, and as the center of a new civilization it will become a new symbol - one of unity and life, anew.

Ok...I should have been doing something else but this EOW caught my eye and I was lost.

    E.O.W Round 29: Monolith

"The huntsmen stared in wonder at the structure, which seemed so out of place on those cliffs, in stark contrast to the nothingness beyond it. With no signs of life, they could but imagine who had once inhabited it, and why they had left."

I am sure one or two people might choke and die from the cliche description, but it was a fun piece to do!

Zhirang, I think you have a nice sense of lighting going there - digital is good...

speculart, your rock texture is creepy. I thought that was a photo. The light is so cool.

hey Spyro this is fucking awesome man!
is it a matte painting or completely brushwork?

Also very impressive work by Speculart. looks partly photorealistic. very cool!

Hey Funky that´s quite interesting but there seems to be a mistake in perspective as bruce already mentioned.
Bruce could you explain that perspective issue a little more? couldnt follow your "overpaint"
What are these two vanishing points on the left and the right hand side of the monolith for?

Cheers zhiwang/bumskee/chrike, chrike- brushes only, nothing photographic or referenced, although i used I-netGrafX's foliage brushes which gives the treeline a more realistic feel than if i'd went in with a tiny hard round and sketched em individually , speculart, stunning stuff, great work allround fellas
