    concept:
    Moorgoon Leviathan
The moorgoon leviathan generates a strong magnetic field and passes a bio-electric current through the seawater that sifts through its body, propelling it like a jet. Males are tuned to the planet's magnetic poles to travel in a general east-west direction, females in the opposite direction, usually. The inertia of their mass makes quick braking virtually impossible. To avoid the collision of their massive bodies, males swim much deeper than the females. Males and females spend most of their lives completely seperately. To reproduce, females must call to the males psionically. Sonic communication, typical of earth's whales, is ineffective given the depths that usually seperate the sexes. Female moorgoon leviathans come to rest and inflate the tough but flexible sac around their brains with a reserve of oxygen, activating the apporpriate neurotransmitters. The increased oxygen amplifies their psionic abilities, sending their primal mating message into the inky depths below. A male recieves the message of the female and easily locates the eggs, spawned much in the way salmon do. The orca pictured above shows the relative scale of the female moorgoon leviathan.

    concept:

Vouganths are a species of predatory megalocrustaceans that
inhabit the shallow bays of S/2560 A3.
They are primarily bottom feeders that claw and cruise their way
along the muddy bottoms of the shallows with their massive front
limbs; actual swimming is too inefficient with the heavy
    exoskeletons that the valouganths bear.
Valouganths have the smallest brain to body mass ratio known on
the planet; despite being intimidating in size and proportional
speed, they rarely pose a threat to human colonizers unless
    irritated into a blind rage.
Angry valouganths have been known to use their arms--which are
plated with a soft, flexible chitin that allows them to bend--to
launch themselves above the surface of the shallows and onto
    passing cargo ships.

Living in the deep depths of the ocean these Mamathons prey on large squids. Their shells are used both as a defense measure against contemporary preditors, as well as a weapon for ramming preys and preditors. Their lights have an internal glowing to illuminate the dark regions of the ocean.

The orange leviathan skims the bottom of the seas like a ghost in the water, silent, in the darkness. The newly built testing facility for deep sea mechanics is in a position just under a part of the animal's route. It follows slight currents created by heat and the magnetic field of the Earth. Throughout the millions of years the animals have bred they have evolved so that they do not need to come to the surface for air, or need a mouth for feeding. Instead they have grown long tentacles under their stomachs that brush the sea-bed and pick up all the organisms that grow and live within the currents.

On the island of Ugljan there is a tale of Gromlek, the terrible sea monster which eats little children. He comes when kids swim far from shore, and don't listen to their parents. Sometimes, he can also appear in a bath-tub. But everyone who is older then 10 years knows that it's just a made up story to scare little children... Or is it?

Written in the old books is the coming of the beast that serves the devil. It shall arise from the bottomless pit to consume what is left of man on earth in the end of times. No man can stand before it. From the book of Job: His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth....His heart is as firms as stone; yea, as hard as a piece of the nether millstone....He esteemeth iron as straw, and brass as rotten wood. The arrow cannot make him flee: slingstones are turned with him into stubble....He maketh the deep to boil like a pot....he is a king over all the children of pride." It is also foretold that before the end, the heavens shall part and the beast slain by the One who sits at the right hand of God.

    concept:

The Deep Sea Leviathan was recently discovered during a research about life in the Mariana Trench. A single exemplar was killed for reseaching purpose and was brought ashore.
Different from the expected, this deep sea creature had no unusual appearance besides it's length of about 90 feet and reminds us of a mixture between primitive fish and lizard. Still the researchers puzzle about its classification. At the moment the guesses go in the direction of coelacanths and other jaw-fishes, though the Leviathan (as the researchers call it for the time being) misses several fins and flappers, but only has three pairs of pectoral fins shaped like the ones known of whales and a uberlong tail with sharp spikes. Researchers found rests of other deep sea animals bodies on these spikes; either octopuses and other rather defenseless creatures get casually hit and killed by the spikes or the Leviathan uses his tail intentionally for hunting. The Leviathans diet consists of every animal that's smaller and/or weaker than itself. It cannot swim very fast, but very directed. Similar to dolphins they orientate themselves with a sonar system in the head.
Leviathans are most probably live solitarily and give birth to living hatchlings (since they found a fully developed small Leviathan withiout any egg integument in the larger exemplars belly).
The latest reports give information about the unique colour of the Leviathans, already called Orange Leviathans by the puplic. The body contains just one single pigment, that colours the whole body, even teeth, spikes, inner organs and the tiny eyes vividly range.

Rendering after low-res photo taken by an AeroBot on Costeau 13, during filming for survey on the Sub-explorers of the planet.
Little is known about this giant orange sea leviathan, but it solves the mystery of the 11 missing wessels.
Theory goes, that the creature, when seeing something on the surface large enough to catch it´s attention, leaps out of the water, crashing on the intended victim, bringing it down into the abyss and then pinning it on one of its gigantic teeths, starts to demolish it with the tentacle-like mounted mouth.
Since the photo was taken, witnesses claim to have seen something looking like the mouth-tentacle breaking surface, sprouding water like the long extinct whales did on Terra 1, wich leads to theories about it doubling as a breathing organ.

    concept:
    Evergrin
Evergrin's are peculiar creatures that are named for their perpertual smile (guh). They dislike open air, but their (for lack of a better term) tentacles are useful for snatching things closer to the sea surface, such as whales coming up for air, boats, and low flying planes. Attacking manned vessels has created the myth of the giant squid, which, of course, is totally ridiculous.
Evergrin's have no eyes to speak of, but their sense of hearing is equal to none in all the world and they can imitate any sound within it to extreme accuracy. There was once an incident not so long ago where an Evergrin followed a passenger ship for miles until it finally veered off course, much to the relieved sighs of the passengers. Unknown to them, the creature had been following the sounds of an obnoxiously loud cd player spouting emo in one of the lower cabins. For years afterward, the approaching sound of 'you are the wind beneath my wings' meant impending doom for a ship or submarine.

    Pacific Coral-Grinder
As the early ancestor of today's clownfish, a Coral-Grinder spent it's entire life inside the tropical reefs of the pacific. With enough jaw pressure to bite through a passenger boat, this large fish consumed the often rock-hard sea plants that were native at the time. Though it was a herbivore by nature, it was not a rare site to watch this clumsy, poor-sighted fish consume entire schools of fish as it pecked at it's meals.
With no natural predators, the Coral-Grinder quickly overpopulated coastlines and destroyed the large, colorful fields that lined the coasts. As generations passed, the mammoth fish became smaller and smaller to make up for it's quickly depleating food supply.

    concept:
    Firegron Leviathan
The Firegon is a deep-sea leviathan that lives in sumberged volcanoes. It’s skin is nearly impossible to penetrate and is even resistant to lava. They were originally blueish, but after living in such areas like volcanoes and hot enviroments under the deepest parts of the sea they have turned into a fiery orange. The Firegron spends much of its years hibernating in these hot aand deep recises absorbing the heat around it. It’s hard skin collects heat particles to use as a defense mechanism and also as a attacking device.
Every fifteen years though a Firegron must eat. It is in this time that firegon Leviathans will leave their hibernating spots, and cause utter chaos in the sea and above. They are very well known to attack coastlines and demolish whole cities close to the sea.
Due to the fact that Firegrons absorbs so much heat in there skin they tend to emitt these extreme levels of heat off their bodies. They will release all heat particles collected under sea when they swim up to cooler areas. A firegron Leviathan can emitt so much heat that surfaces of oceans can begin to boil, they can also melt metal and cause buildings to erupt in flames.

    Giant Sea-Bee
Accurately dubbed (unlike sea-cows) the Giant Sea-Bee, this creature's tail resembles the abdomen of a bee. It's actually a filter feeding crustacean which inhabits the mountainous depths of the ocean. A fairly dosile creature with few predators, their only defense is a poisoned spine which protrudes from both sides.

    Bermuda Kraken
This powerful creature lives in famous "bermuda triangle" area. Everyone knows that this place is nightmare for all ships and their crews. But they don´t know when they enter bermuda triangle that they also cross the line of bermuda krakens territory. These creatures are one of the most effective predators ever, they are strong, huge, fast and have no mercy. Absence of big fishes incline they attacking on ships and everything wich moving across their territory. They attacking single or in small group, when is kraken only one he is able to catch mostly small ships, but in group they can destroy relative big ship. To better attacking they use acoustic waves as sonar for localise ships. That is mystery of "bermuda triangle" broken, but not absolutly. Because there was found shipwrecks of huge ships which were too big for krakens. Maybe there is something bigger and more powerful ....

The planet of Grimsdale was not known for its aquatic life, long has it's oceans remain devoid of any obvious life. However, only recently on a regular planetary scan over the eerily serene world, the DMF Empire learned of the great sub-aquatic beasts that lay beneath the Grimsdalian Oceans' golden gleaming waves. A proper name for these immense creatures has not yet been decided due to the more important matter of preparing for the inevitable conflict upon Grimsdale.
A recent enviroment and wildlife meeting pieced together a small description of the elusive creatures:
These new underwater leviathans can grow up to 2 miles long and 250 feet in girth, the entire species have a vibrant orange coloured hide, possibly for camoflage in the vast depths below.
They prey on almost any sized creature they can reach, be it a school of tiny fish to something the size of the great moonsysian tendraun.
Fortunatly, they seem to be rather docile when they surface to absorb the JG Light energy that floods the planet.

The Sea Leviathan (Ctenophora Aquamegalo) is a deep-sea-inhabitor that was first discovered by the Observer-Mission in 2039. After the polar caps had vanished and most of the land was gone, the oceanic-population recovered and was soon on a new apex. When the first ships freighters dissapeared in the south-east asian region, teams of hunters where sent down to find the reason. The orange type of Leviathans that is native to that area is a herbivore, as discovered later. It feeds on plancton and is no danger to man. It's fluorescent light can be seen from above the ocean surface at night.

The oceans of Glaucus, a small moon orbiting a gas giant in the Regulus star system, are home to a bizarre species of microbial life. When the calm clear waters become devoid of nutrients the microbes come together to form a multicellular being of titanic proportions. The microbes differeniate themselves into the massive creature seen here. Some become the great fins that use the suns energy for heat and photosynthesis, and other cells at the bottom become great tusks that dig into the ground for minerals. Together they create enough food to survive, alone they would starve.
Once there is enough nutrients in the water again, the great beasts dissolve into their constituent parts. The tourist industry tracks these creatures and directs the many cruise ships that travel Glaucus to see these gentle giants.

    concept:

The Orange Sea Leviathan is believed to be a distant relative of the Basilosaurus (an early whale) surviving from the Eocene period aprox 65 MYA. Despite its large size the OSL is a lover, not a fighter. Its powerful tusks project from the lower jaw and are used for grasping the female whilst mating and to dislodge shellfish from the sea floor. Food is eaten with the assistance of the creatures elongated upper lip or "pseudo-trunk". It is air breathing and swims via propulsion generated by the lateral motion of the tail. Completely lacking dorsal fins the creature maintains stability due to the vertical membranes of the tail fin and large lateral fins located at the rear of the body.
OSL's are a nuisance to modern commercial fishing vessels but were greatly feared by south sea whaling fleets in the 1700's, as the creature often mistook the underside of these vessels for sun bathing female leviathans and subsequently attempted to mate with them.
The conspicuous tentacles are use primarily for displaying mood and grappling.
OSL numbers have plummeted recently with the resumption of commercial harvesting. Their meat is a delicacy being high in beta carotene and tastes like... oranges.

They have been worshipped on the islands of the pacific for all of recorded history. The only scientific evidence of their existance til now were deep sea "hot zones" that fed deep sea life.. areas deep underwater that spew volcanic gasses that encourage life at the bottom of the ocean... although this phenomena was thought to be caused by volcanic activity, the true cause is the orange sea leviathan. The Leviathan lives under the earth's crust, channeling the heat of the core and giving life to deep sea creatures. Once every ten thousand years they are surface to release their accumulated energy. This is part of the cycle of life on earth as all life forms that threaten the well being of the planet are wiped out.

After choosing my 5 favorites (ninth, rawwad, hideyoshi, jakkas, and tyranx) I was torn more between jakkas and tyranx. Both entries were rendered well and fit the description. I had to vote for Tyranx in the end though. The scale and design of the creature just stood out by the excellent rendering of the scene.

I went with Ninth. I love lovely paintings as much as the next guy. But there's a design element that has to happen here as well I think. A number people painted really nice sea snakes that happened to be orange. And a few of them are really powerful paintings in their own right. But large snakes wasnt enough to get my vote.

The one person that (for me) put it all together was Ninth. Its an interesting concept with its own unique ecological demands that are worked out into a really gorgeous design that ends up becoming a fantastic painting. Ninth didnt even need to do the extra work of the scenic inset to get the vote from me and now that its there I wish I could vote for it twice.

So thats where my vote goes.

Voted for JakkaS. There were soo many that I liked and I was origionally going to vote Boug (since his seemed very possible), but Jakka's use of Orange in more ways than color pushed me over the edge. The rendering was spot-on and and the creature oozed with character.

I cant wait to see what is is submitted this week.

Rawwad great work, i really get the sense of speed of the monster!

Tyranx man you where the surprise of this COW for me! It works really well with the text! Great job!

It was a really really hard choice between you guys. But i voted Rawwad because you can really feel the speed and motion of the creature and it was pretty more orange then Tyranxes haha
    Both really outstanding job.

So many great entries, Neorepto, Ninth, Raward, Jakkas, Tyranx's monsters all made the voting difficult.

Went with Jakkas, because, his concept and design of the creature's head fitted the title most adaquately - Orange Sea Leviathan.

Save a few, most of the other pieces painted an orange-coloured leviathan, but it might as well be a Blue Sea Leviathan, a Green Sea Leviathan or a Red Sea Leviathan, etc... or just Sea Leviathan.

MAN!!! There were nice entries this round! Really liked Ninth and charge. Was going to go with charge because of the great tounge, but then there also was Tyranx and of course JakkaS. I kind of want to vote for somebody else but man, I just like the look of the JakkaS creature the best. So he got my vote. Tons of great stuff though people, plenty of people who can be proud of their sweet monster!

Wow...talk about an amazing turnout. I had three people I wanted to vote for. They’re just so great.

Tyranx- I knew you would likely enter last and holy crap! Those black silhouettes figures elevate that piece to a whole new game. That piece is just jaw dropping. You are the winner of eye candy this round, that’s for sure.

rawwad- Close second for the eye candy. Actually some details you achieved in the leviathan itself mostly out-do everyone elses. The sense of scale is there with that nice touch of the ship and that is just one wicked looking leviathan. You nailed the atmosphere of the piece too.

Ninth- Actually, pretty darn close to details for first too if you ask me. Most important though is you got a design unlike any other. This thing is just unbelievable looking. It's almost like a mix between a dragon and very angry shrimp. I also like the last changes you made. The red tones suite it well and you made the piece even better by adding in that separate piece on the bottom. I had to give you my vote.

Other ones I would like to point out...
    yAdam, Ive, GreenTopaz, Hideyoshi, Skeiff

Congratz everyone. Onward to the next round.

Ha, I just noticed how strangely calm the captain type silhouette is at the very right of the image, Thyranx! Is he somehow the guy who summoned the creature, or why is he cool with it?

I was going through the entries, and I thought for sure thatId be voting for Ninth. But then I saw Tyranx's piece, and it awed me.

No!... Maybe..... Look, that was six weeks ago.

Ninth, Jakkas, Hideyoshi, rawwad, all extremely strong entries. I wish I could vote for multiple entries, as they're doing in the ChOW this week, but I had to go with Tyranx's amazing entry. The aerial perspective and the silhouettes of the pirates make the perceived scale here just *enormous*. His texture work, as usual, is also extremely strong. Love that this concept was placed firmly in the Carribbean by the forground figures.

Definitely one of the best COW's ever.

having votet for rawwad because the head of jakkas' creature seems not to fit in the finished version, all the heads shape was formed around the orange in the face's center and within the orange's dissappear the head's shape is a little senseless to me .Tyranx's creature seems a little less realistic than rawwad's one.

    Voted for Rawwad.

I liked your design the most, its believable and you also have some great action going on.

Other standouts for me were Ninth, Greentopaz, Davi, Hideyoshi, Main Loop, Boug, Skeiff and of course Jakkas
I think this round was one of the best for COW! Hooray for Sea Monsters!

    Thanks for the votes, guys!

Tough choice for me as well. This was a great round with so many excellent participants--but we've only got one vote each, and mine's going with rawwad.

His initial design sketch was well-composed and imaginative, and his final image ferociously executed. The tight rendering and explosive energy contained within make for an image that really sticks in one's mind.

I do have a crit on it--the arch of the leviathan's body is too vertical on its back half, or the back half appears too close to the front half. As a result it might appear that while the creature was rocketing straight up out of the water, it bent down to get a better look at the boat. Still, a fantastic image that illustrates the concept at hand superbly.

Close seconds were Tyranx, JakkaS and GreenTopaz. yAdam, davi, Hideyoshi, Main Loop, ferak, and Boug's entries caught my eye too. Well done, everyone!

It was a hard choice for me between Rawwed and Jakkas, In Jakkas I reallyh like the head design, instead of being just a large eel shape, he pushed the head to be different, I also like the placement of the fins, Colors are very very vibrant all around. Jakkas work has a tropical feel to it. Love the palette, great work.
Rawweds concept also works, great action, love the colors, reminds me of the atlantic, wonderful dynamics. Rawwed's concept resembles a whale, but not really. its very belieavable.

Tyranx overall composition is awesome, but I think Rawwed and Jakka's creature concepts are a bit stronger putting them in the lead for me.

But in the end I can only vote for one and my vote goes to Rawwed, his dynamics, colors, are done very well. Great job everyone.

The dynamism is rawwads composition has won me over, like many have said this was a tough choice but rawwad' creature design along with the composition has decided it for me. I also liked skeiff's, ninths, jakkas and tyranix, but i have to go with rawwad. Great job everyone you have inspired me to join in on the next one!

This one was great. The nicest COW I've seen so far. Soooo hard to decide I had to put up a table to make the decision easier:

    Best Scenes:
charge (very dynamic, great sense of motion)
ferag seg (the same here + perspective bonus)
rawwad/hideyoshi (same scene, almost same creature, made two of my days )
Boug (made me laugh. Great idea)
Tyranx (I'm sure this one made some people poop their pants. Great scene and composition)

    Design:
Ninth (Gozilla's big brother. Closest to the Leviathan-description)
    EtaCarinae (nice squid/facehugger/jellyfish-mix)
Tom Garden (pretty mainstream, but I liked the idea of putting this thing over the surface. Missing scale tho, loved the reflections)

    Both Design & Scene:
Skeiff (Clearly visible creature profile - i loved the bug-like appearance, threatening mood)

But eventually I decided to vote for Neorepto. The creature design is awesome, the scale is shown and the egg-thing made it even more menacing. May have some technical flaws, but that's secondary.

    NICE WORK EVERYONE!

Jabo: Thanks for the vote. I still feel like a beginner in this talented crowd, so every single vote just makes my whole day.

And please, anyone with a crit, I'd like to hear it. I want to make my giant nuclear tentacle in the next thread to be my best work yet!
