Your sketches are very cool and imaginative , the light goddess came out pretty good to , i took some time and looked trough your whole 15 pages of inevitable evolution , and in the first pages i found out in the back then that you were kinda in the same stage that i am now at my start , but i will let you be the judge of that...

You have a real range of work in here from really good to mediocre to bad (mostly in the really good category). But I suppose all of us do (I certainly do). It's cool to show not just what you're best at but what you're weak at also and get crits on it for growth. Takes guts.

When you do the photo references are you painting directly over the photo and sampling colors from it or are you finding the colors yourself within whatever color picker your software offers and drawing the figure from your eye's observations? If it's the latter, you are fucking nuts-o good!

stark: thanks. next time copy before hitting send I've been burned a couple times by the forums :<
hyver: dude, I'll be at your house tomorrow night! WTG!

    writerof: thanks thanks and thanks

mattgamer: yeah you're right, I went too hard with the edges of the background stuff...erm it's a bad habit to want hard edges. I started getting lazy with the colors as the study continued on. I'm not sure how many hours I spent on it. It was a few hours though. the original parkour image

writerof: heheh sorry! I was busy moving to germany! :o I'm here now, and don't know very much german, so time to get back to work!

    skweed: thanks dood

jakers: thanks dude surprisingly it's hard for me to simplify things. I have this really bad urge to want to go zoom in and render :/ Keep posting and I'll keep critting

kaff: dood I wish I could take credit for the lighting and colors and expression all that credit goes to my friend robbie [the guy in the pic] and glenn black [the photographer] Glenn started out as a hobbiest photographer I think less than 2 years ago and is making some really great strides...and taking some badass parkour pics when he goes out to practice with friends.

flamable: I can't believe you looked through all 15 pages :o I've made a bit of progress since I started the sketchbook It's always nice to see a progression, I think. Just studies studies studies! instant gratification

    atlantik: cheers mate

snubbed: thanks dude! I wouldn't have come as far as I have without crits! Knowing that you'll be getting critiques from other people helps with self-critiquing before posting! Self critique is the path the improvement

about the studies. Yeah it's all from observation. There is no tracing and no color picking involved. There's not much to be learned from using the color picker or tracing!

stark: guten tag herr brandon. I am liking germanland so far, though I understand very little of what people are saying :< the internet in my apartment doesn't work. So I have to come down and use the netz in the person in the apt below me, so I dunno how much IRC I will be doing

sorry for the lack of updates, but I've been busy moving to germany

awsome stuff in here dude, I especially like the robot image in post 402. and that gesture study in 350 is sick dude, it took a second to figure out which one was the painting. A little more motion blurring on the foot would have added to the action though. I really like all the traditional painting stuff in here, are you doing those in your sketchbook? if so what kind of sketchbook paper are you using?

-you sir are indeed a pandabat

She looks like she will eat your soul and then kick your lifeless body around for eons. I love it! I'm still learning my german too, so we're both in the same boat. Now if only I could pick up a pencil once again!

    alexc: thanks
atlantik: Thank you. I'm on exchange for a semester, less for the school, more so that I can travel. Europe may be boring for europeans, but for americans it's really quite fascinating [at least for me]

Toxdel: thanks man. yeah I have a bad habit of liking hard edges Pretty much all my acrylic stuff is in a sketchbook [aside from a few here and there] and the oil paintings are on canvas, canvas board, and masonite. I'm not sure what I use for a sketchbook paper :/ The majority of the paintings in there are on kind of cheap paper that buckles when wet. So, uhm thicker paper is better

Slash: yeah my friend takes some nice pictures

Hyver: yes it was delicious Hotel Hyver gets 5 stars

Stark: thanks man. I think there's a little bit more pressure on my learning though You can doo eet! pick it up and start drawingzorz!

Just kicking around some ideas. My riverguardian from the last post is a boring design, so I wanted to try something else with a similar topic, different approach. I hope the colors aren't too nuclear. Have I mentioned how much I hate my laptop monitor?

Nice shot buddy,I like it much more than the river guardian But something there pick my eyes out, this texture ,which you've get used is somelike you've worked on 3D model, but that is only my opinion, overall I think it is very very nice character.About the monitor, yeah I'm agree with you about these laptop monitors, they are a bit off especially when they haven't anti reflex layer and theyr colors are a bit off too but that deppend of laptop himself - his brand and capacity.IMO Germany is most beatyful country in Europa, I prefer it at France or Italy and I'm glad you going there
    Take care mate!

atlantik: thanks. yeah that texture you're seeing is from some custom brushes [i think I stole it from bumskee] in B&W making big shapes, then copying the layer, flipping the layer horizontally and setting the new layer to darken which gives you:
    Name: rg2d.jpg
Views: 598
Size: 119.3 KB
Then I painted over it to get a greyscale image, and used new layers with different blending modes: color, multiply, soft light...andof course more painting

I'm staying at Hyver's this week and every morning when he gets up he does something to warm up, usually thumbnails- so i'm trying to take a page out of his book, so to speak. Hyver got a toshiba tabletpc today, so I tried that out [muahaha he was busy doing freelance, so he had no time to fool around with it ]. I have to say, I am very jealous of his new investment.

The colour study with parkour guy looks totally awesome, i think you totally nailed the lighting and the tones: it just looks like life, it's very natural and convincing.
And you've captured the "dynamic" feeling of the scene as well, i wish one day i'll be able to draw/paint like that.
