    General query

    Hi there all,

Im new to this forum, I have studied architecture(but quit, jus couldnt take the workload no more haha) previously and have done a lil bit of design study in high school..and this site has definetly inspired me again to pick up my pencil!

    anyway..jus a quick question..

I am ok with sketching from life, pictures etc...
but my biggest problem is sketching from my head(no reference). Im sure this is normal for most people...
just wanted to know, will copying 1,000,000 things from life and references cure this? or should i try some specific excercises? any tips that you guys have found works?
    Sorry for the silly query...

    cheers
    Philip

Just doing reference wont make you great at working from imagination. It helps, but it doesnt make you great at it. You have to practice drawing from reference, from life, and from imagination.

build up a great imagination. combined with your knowledge of life drawing etc, i think you basically get a sum of the two. result wise.

Yeah, drawing from reference will definetly help. But while you're out and about study things right in front of you too, people look at me wierd when I walk right up to a tree or something, check out it's leaves and bark and whatnot but it works (Sometimes I even get all touchy feely too haha ) That's when they really look weird at you.

Draw something from reference, then draw the same thing again without the reference. It will expand your mind amazingly.

to help with your imagination, if your running low on ideas, try reading some books or watch films for inspiration, they can be kids books or whatever, i think i have quite a good imagination which is probably because i read quite a but as a kid, but i havethe same problem trying to get my ideas down on paper which i find i cant do, so end up drawing something really simple. i need to do what you need to do by combining reference and imagination as other people have suggested
