oh man, great sketch book man. I'm digging your pencils too. The orc is coming along nicely. When are you going to post it in the finished

P.S. Where did you order your moleskin sketchbook from?

JERI: thanks! yeah the one with the hands turned out pretty good..

DannySketch: thanks you.. guess that means it's going in the right direction then, hehe!

Kian and guitarjames: thank you very much! feels very good to hear that people think I'm improving a bit at least..

    camilografix: thanks!

BarretThomson: thank you.. yeah well I did a stupid mistake on the orc accidently merged all the layers and saved it so the technique I used on the upper body is'nt working so well anymore.. but I'll try to get it going again.. or redo him in a more interesting composition maybe..

I bought my moleskin book at http://www.moleskine.co.uk..

Bald Muffin thanks! I will try my best to keep it up and make it better..

Tobin: hey! yeah maybe I'll try that further on.. not really into vector work myself so I rather focus on other things right now but in the future, yeah sure, I might love it, heh!

The early pencils blew my mind! The fun you have with the overlapping images is inspiring.... i really think you should try to stay that playful with your color pages and vehicle concepts.

If you're into vehicle concepts, check out this guy's stuff too http://www.drawthrough.com

Scott Robertson used to have some free tutorials on his site... it seems now you have to buy a DVD....bummer. Anyway, his method for vehicle design and getting perspective dialed is really good.

Also thanks for posting in my SB!

surfacemonkey: thanks man! yeah I guess I should be more playful in my finished pieces.. just that I want to learn to give those things a finished look, have'nt made it happen so far though.. and the overlaping image thing feels like more of a sketch technique to make tjhe pages less boring than a finished look.. but hey I will try it out..

yeah scott robertsson is the shit.. thinkin about buying his DVD..

some new crap from school and home.. not much I know..

Hi Joe, really nice tone work here, congrats on becoming an art student and I wish you the best of luck in your endeavours towards an artistic career.

Your line work has a nice clean fluidity about it that is just pleasing to look at, your industrial designs look great as does your other character work - which is a rare thing mind you. I encourage you to improve your skills in each as you continue along your path, artists who can illustrate a wide range of subject matter are highly prized.

    Keep at it, Darren

love the spaceship and sword chick of the recent update!

with the eeyes, dont forget to have a look at the corrugator muscles and obicularis oculi and the other muscles that control the eye/brow area, they really help and it only takes like a quick read over to study.

oma: thanks! yeah more will come, promise.. think I'm gonna stick with this sketchbook for a long long time now so I make alot of pages and have my improvements during my schooling recorded in one thread.. so feel very very free to check back every once in a while

Magic Man: hey! thanks man! you inspire me so much and those words coming from you really boast me to keep pushin to get better..

Haxxxor: thanks man! hmm it's really just a brush that is made up by dots instead of one single big dot and then set to brush dynamics so that it's edges end up more like real brush strokes..

rodrigo!: hey man! love your stuff! thanks.. did'nt really understand much of those words, heh! I'm not fuckin a doctor man, hehe! no jokes aside I'm gonna check it up so I understand excactly what muscles you mean and try to read up on my anatomy..

mull77: thanks man! glad to make you feel a little funny inside..

dont have much of an update today, was gonna photograph some paintings from school to get crits on my analog painting which is to say the least basic.. but unfortunatly I dropped my camera in a full glass of beer so it's not working to well.. gonna try it out soon though once it's dry inside, the display is totaly fucked but I think it can still take pictures

anyways, here's a ittle portrait I'm doing for a DJing friend of mine.. really early stage and I would love to get some hard crits before I get to far with it..

Congrats on becoming a student. I remeber your other skecthbook, that had some great stuff in it. You produce some very clean work at times. And seem to be improving at a rapid rate.

hey joe - love what you are up to man. especially how you deal with pencil. love the loose figures and eye and other studies. i think your friends portrait could use some of that looser touch? looking forward to see how it turns out.

Nice work. I understand what you don't like about the last portrait (the quality I assume, don't know if it's a likeness) but it has a deeper sense of expression. If you want to regard it as a failure, know that it's a good one.

tensai: hey! thanks! yeah I know, I need to get alot looser in my colored work..

Listing: thanks mate! yeahwell I kinda like it actually.. mostly meant I was'nt very happy with the hair yet.. gonna work on it though.. liknesswise it's spot on..

joined character of the week this week on the subject Bi-Polar Man.. It was alot of fun and these ..... of the week things feel like really good practice.. gonna enter more of them..

I am in the middle of moving right now so dont have much else for update than the Bi Polar man piece.. well here it is..

The sad fate of Bi-Polar Man

Peter Johnson was a man who had his emotions in total controll, he took great pride in this attribute and as an IRS employee it was a great asset. He lived his life comortably auditing and calculating and was pretty happy with it until one day when he audited the wrong man. Insane brainsurgent/mad professor Igor Rubowsky. One day John woke up finding himself dressed in a suit of iron on a surgents table in an empty warehouse. Two faces, one brain, two modes, one insane killer and one over empathatic over emotional nice guy. John was from now on doomed to walk the earth as Bi-Polar Man. His two personalitys unaware of eachother but always affecting eachother. When his right evil side of the brain was swtched on his left emotional empathatic side was sleeping and vice versa, never seeing eachother but always affecting eachother. His emotional side always started caring for things that his evil side later destroyed, so soft side morned and cried and found new things to love that was later killed or destroyed by bad side and so on.

Looking good! I like the chow a lot, kinda what I had in mind too. For your friends portrait, her eyes seem a bit large. I think I would wait on adding little details and such until you work out a solid base. That is unless have have more than a couple layers. If you posted the pic you're working from, I could give a better crit.

Keep up the good work man.
