Yep, proportions seems a bit off in the portrait. Eyes are kinda unaligned, I don't know if I said this earlier, but a cheap trick (it isn't a scientific thing, but it's worth trying) is to draw her left eye first if you are right handed, and the other way around if you are left handed. Another thing that helps this kind of linework is not to enclose features. I.e. the lines around the lips close all the way, so do those for the eyes. I'll look for an example to clarify my crappy explanation.
    Keep it up!

ヨー James, things I think you should do - more enviros, even in thumbnail form - a page of thumbnails should be great. It's good you do life drawing - perhaps some of those can be sprayed with fixative and then given a water colour wash to make them seem finished or more refined.

p.s. keep up the good work, skull looked good. (yep an asspat).

Just great to see this amount of work and how it's all paying off. Yr getting exelent crits here too - take em on! Some times it seems to take a while for da msg too sink in lol.
Think some of the best crits point to you taking more time to 'think' your work out. I know its hard as yr alwys flat out but it Will pay off.

Hey guitarjames, couple of crits on the portrait. Female neck should always look thinner than the width of the head - exaggerate the ref a little if you have to, but you shouldnt usually. Also, try toning down the entire face and only let the white of the paper show through for highlights. That way you can push the darks darker.

I like the hatchwork on that one Keep up the good work.

Love that portrait james, you seem to be getting the hang of that color! With enviro thumbs try to block in rough values, thats the most important thing in enviros. With the digi, you have the values backwards. Things get darker as they come towards you, and as they get farther away the atmosphere gets in the way so they get lighter. Keep up the good work ~

Hey james! Nice to see thumbs! Your sp is pretty cool.

Now with the thumbs, the lines look shaky - the trick is to ghost the line between starting point and end point (you can even put two dots in the those places, and play dot to dot sort of thing). Make sure that the pencil moves from your elbow and not wrist. That way you can get much straighter and shaper lines. Thumbs are all about shapes so getting some sharp lines will help to add dynamism and solidity into them. Hope that poorly written advice helps (English isn't my best area is it XD)!

Hey james, your pencil skills are definately improving. Try to think of overall values as much as values on individual parts. One side is usually darker than the other, with even the lightest value on that side darker than the darkest value on the light side. I like the creature, but you should put at least quick doodle person to indicate size (or a silhouette). Keep it up, much improvement lately.

Your sp from a couple of posts ago is superb, you're taking your time to paint these and it really shows. The same goes for your pencils, everything is looking a lot tighter.
In that helmet test you could try reducing the saturation of the background colors, cause right now everything is competing and nothing pops. It might be the oldest trick in the book, but if you want that red to jump out just go for a considerably desaturated cool green.
    Cheers!

alright, so lately you're getting insanely better. Watch your values with color, the apple's flat because it's all midtone. Same with the guy in red armor, some of the highlights are muddying up the color. Looks sweet though.

Hey James, nice updates.. I'm not one to tell, however, these thumbs , i know you said you wasn't happy, but I think you stated the wrong reason for not being so.. If you enlarge the thumbs just a little next time, and do exactly like you did this time.. just one thing different, don't try to catch any elements, leave
tons of space for your brain to fill in!
If your not given a special assignment, then you don't need to sketch up a particular idea, STAY LOOSE !

Good stuff man.. but i ain't giving you no asspats anymore Just tips and crits !

Hey james, life drawings are looking good. I like the painter guy, but the blue lines flatten him out. Try only putting them on the dark or light side.

I like the way you painted that portrait. The lips are tricky, need some studying. Much better job on the eyes btw, even if they are a litte big.

Coloured portraits are getting better and better.
You are still drawing eyes a tad big, try to force yourself to do them smaller. And remember that the mouth wraps around the muzzle, it's looking too flat and facing forward in your last portrait.
    keep it up!

Hey james, I like your b/w selfportrait. Dry brushstrokes look really good there.

As for watercolour it's a bit too dry. Try starting out with a really diluted colour and then building up with more saturated colours.

Also, I don't know what you look like, but I think the eyes in your drawing are a bit too big. And the face doesn't really have a definite shape. I suggest paying more attention to your bone structure next time you draw.

Crits: in the watercolor church try using straighter lines to construct the volumes. Use a ruler if you need during the basic construction.
Digi armor design's looking cool. Value-wise, you're rendering every little piece separately, which is ok if you aim for a more descriptive than realistic lighting. Observe how volumes turn away from the lightsource and get darker, and how different parts of the image affect the whole (i.e. what casts shadows over what, what blocks the light to what, what reflects light, etc).
Hands studies looking good, b&w sp looking sweet. Just try scaling down the features in the wc portrait.
    Cheers!!
