Hey Fishspawn, do you recommend going to Laguna College of art and Design? I ask because I was recently accepted for Animation, and I am curious for thoughts about the school.

jdeegz - aight, thanks for the crits

Swift Sketcher - Hey. I definitely reccommend lcad. its one of the only schools with a focus on great traditional animation. The sculpture program is one of the best out there - i've decided i like it the most out of everything that I've done so far. Like all schools though, its mostly about the effort you put in. But there are usually great teacher/student ratios and there are a lot of amazingly good teachers there. It's also in a great location - i've had several friends come visit and complain about not living here Hope to see you around next semester!

Here are some anatomy drawings, 20-40 mins. I hate taking pictures of them with my camera because it always butchers the line quality. Oh well.

Lol this is a bad way to start a new page. I'm trying out different things though. Last 2 looked soft because i was trying to apply what i learned about oil paint to it. Apparently i didnt do a very good job at that. More hard brushes on this one. Also i sampled some color from some reference pics because i was having a really hard time making things look bright. I'm too used to dark atmosphere. Need to lighten things up. Anyway here it is, 1 hour.

I think your art is kinda similar to mine , you have all you need , you know what to do , but sometimes u get bored doing it , i kinda got over that... Wit time that disappears. I watched most of your sketchbook , good line-work , and the perspective is very well built but you have some problems with the oils , i noticed some of your paintings , the one after Caravaggio, the winged boy , his right leg is kinda short , or the perspective dosen't really show. And in the portraits , you should separate the sines , the light side and the shadow side. And the second digital painting above this post is , kinda weird , the water doesn't have a support , you should build the grass plane a little bit more even if it's a sketch, and use more brushes. Keep on drawing and concentrate more!

jdeegz - thanks, next time maybe i will

flamable - yeah, a lot of my problem is laziness and the fact that i don't employ all that i know every time. Thanks for dropping by and giving me some criticism.

Another speedy. Probably about 2 hours.

i think you should try to push yourself even more on these speedies.
have you tried 30minutes speedies? or even 15? or 10?
try to do some really fast speedpaints, just to nail down the composition and colors, it really helps alot. and from time to time you can stop and take your time to do some of these advanced ones.
keep working on those gesture drawings, try to work on some more dynamic poses aswell.
    keep it up.

Slayer - thanks for the crits, shorter speedpaints sounds like a good excercise, will try that - always working on gestures.

Ok, so this was gonna be a speedpaint because i saw some random girl with insanely green hair today. But i definitely can't render skintones, so i spent like 4 hours struggling with it and i still don't like it very much. Need help!

Ok so i was trying to fix that girl with the green hair by copying a ref photo. Eventually i sampled some colors to see how wrong i was and got frustrated. So then i just sampled colors from all over and just made the sketch that way - that's the first one. After that i did the same thing with various other people's paintings.

Again i did not mix these colors, but sampled them from the ref. It was an attempt to break my misconceptions about color/value in the face. These were all pretty quick but i think overall it may have had some impact - it was certainly easier towards the later studies. I don't really know what that means but i definitely think this method was worth a shot.

Oh and sorry that they switch sides a lot.

So here's a 1 hour speedpaint since thats what the title of my book claims to do now. Also it was fun, and i will probably keep going later.

looking good man, keep up the work, and i think you should also do some studies of landscapes to get a bit more of a feeling for aerial perspective and stuff, also, on that last one you used like one color per object which makes it look a little flat, try to bring in some random variation, it spawns ideas and adds life. keep it up!

algenpfleger - thanks for dropping by, definitely going to do more landscapes and thanks for the tip!

Here are some figures. First 2 pages are 20min - 1 hr from artistic anatomy. The rest are 30 sec - 5 min from a gesture workshop. Still need crits on my figures!

EDIT: here's my 1 hr speedy for the day. Used ref.

1 hr speedy from ref. So looking at some of the best digital landscape artists i've decided to start making my own custom brushes instead of using other people's. This is the first one using my own brushes.

not really feeling the textured brush for your foliage... i'd just go with some quick strokes of a circular / square. its too distracting =\
where's the horizon line for your water?
what is the thing on the right border of the image?
