    Teen Challenge #9: Rough Landing

Anyone ages 13-19 may submit an entry at any time before the deadline, and any medium (sans photograghy) is allowed.

    The Topic:
    Scene: Rough Landing
Open to interpretation in terms of location, time period and so forth. Like last round, try to make it a fully illustrated scene, preferably with some degree of narrative.
(Thanks to Pixeldragoon for the topic!)

    The Deadline:
Wednesday, July 12th at midnight EST
A few days longer than the usual two weeks, because otherwise it would coincide with the deadline for round 1 of LMS2, which would probably result in chaos for those hoping to participate in both.

    Now get crackin'!

I'm in, need to keep the skills sharp over the summer and having only completed three pitiful sketchbook pages this should whip my slacking ass back into shape.

    Teen Challenge #9: Rough Landing

The impact of the small gunship was mostly due to a small miscalculation of the flight computer, but the crew (mostly) survive.

Phantom are you using black for the shadow? If so...it should be a cool shadow (I think) so dark blue should better suit. Unless I have no idea what i'm talking about.

I think I've been told some time long ago in a galaxy far far away that warm light gives cold shadows and vise versa.

actually thereare many ways of going about making shadows...best way is to go outside and look at them. I find that a darker tone of what ever color the ground is works ok, as does using the the opposite color (looking at a color wheel for instance , the yellow field would have purple shadows) the warm cool thing can work but the color choice is very particular. Black tends to go flat. what ever I do I usually glaze a thin layer of paynes grey over the top to deepen it with out changing the color. But then I work in actual oil paint, I don't know how wel lthis trasfers to the comp... thin transparent layers works ok though. and remember shadows have dimension and shape and variences of colour.

Color lecture over....probably more than you wanted to know
    Chaos

Chaos.... see, shadows aren't blue because of the "warm to cool" thing... They are blue because the sky acts as a light source on them. I'm looking at a yellow house right now, and it is definitley bluer than it is purple in the shadows. A red house would be purple. A darker tone of the ground would only be the case of a cloudy day where it's fairly desaturated, even then the shadow shouldn't be very deep.

Just gotta keep in mind during the day, there are 2 primary light sources; The sun and the sky. Warm sun, cool sky. etc. etc.
