Thread: Portfolio/web-site review
June 24th, 2006 #1
I´ve always wanted to make this thread, but I just didn´t had the chance...... or the guts for that matter. Due to "you know what", I better make the best of it when the times comes.
Of cource, I don´t really have anyone else to ask this stuff, and I fully trust this site spirit to present people with constructive ( and sometimes destructive) critisism. so here it goes:
Name: Mathias Tapia ( or matias, or mathew, or mateo....It doesn´t really matter, is a biblical name, so call use the one that translates to your language)
Aim: Concept artist ( I´m currently working as an illlustrator)
more stuff in my site...
http://www.mippu.com/images/ILUSTRAC...bbitfarmer.jpg( Out )
Everything is in my site already, feel free to say " Take that crap out"...And if you are feeling specialy caritative today, you can check my SB and tell me if there is anything that is worth putting in my portfolio.
Anyways thanks for your time and patience, I´ll add the link to this review to the "portfolio reviews" sticky.

The one of the boar surrounded by the hyena's is definately the best piece here. Cool concept and well executed. This should be the first thing a prospective employer sees. The trolls with the dots on their faces are really good too. The robotic designs are refreshing and well painted, and add variety, so definately keep those. That knight charging at your is pretty cool, just fix his hands so they don't look so blocky.
You have consistent anatomical problems with your human characters. The first 2 characters have tiny hands and static poses. Your woman warrior (4th piece) has a TINY leg and her crotch so widen apart (it sorta looks like she has a penis), but that is worth salvaging since everything else about it is really nice.
I wouldn't put too many troll/goblin pics tho, too much cuteness. The fully colored ones of grotesque monsters aren't doing anything for me. The genie is nicely painted, but I'd lose the rest of the monsters. The B&w pices of the more realistic looking goblins are cool, but feel that it's bring your portfolio down.
But it's all pretty good despite some of the glaring issues. That's my .02

The initial black and whites are my favorites - and I adore sketch 1b (the Stitch-esque characters). The color pieces don't really hold up as well to me, though, and compared to the initial pieces, the later black and whites probably ought to be taken out - the level of draftsmanship is much higher in the first set.

Thanks guys !
I´m taking out the ones you tould me too ( I think)
I have a few more pics that I would like to add to either replace or join the other lot, let me know what you thik ( This have been posted before, I changed some things here and there)
I also have a bunch of character sketches, speed paintings, etc....but I´m not sure if a speed painting counts as a finished picture.
Anyways, If you look at my SB and find something interesting, let me know ( cause I really really don´t know )
