    Bandwidth Leak?

I have a 2 gig a week bandwidth limit, but recently it's been reaching it early. I do something, then check my bandwidth monitor, and all of the sudden 200 mb have been dled from somewhere.

I don't find this particularly amusing, not only because I'm losing bandwidth, but because info is coming into my comp and I don't know what the hell it is.

Right now my comp is Dling at ~36 kb/s while the internet should be basically idle (all I'm doing is typing). I don't see any odd programs in the task manager, spybot didn't find anything, and my virus scanner doesn't show anything.

Anyone know what it could be?

    Try running ethereal: http://www.ethereal.com/

To find out where those packets are going to and from and what kind of data it is.

    Hope this helps.

sounds like a hijack to me.
a lot of hijack programs will run undetected from spybot and norton.
    (try spyware doctor)
a good indicator is to look at your default dial-up connection in internet preferences.
see if there is something called a "tibs 41", or something to that effect.
its likely that while you are online, it is dialing other sites.
do a deep registry scan, it'll likely turn up.

tensai: there are macosx binaries for ethereal in the downloads section.

This is also a good resource for comparison: http://wiki.ethereal.com/SampleCaptures

Try running spybot and lavasoft's Adaware in safe mode, if you're using windows. Sometimes that's the only way to remove junk. Easiest way is to tap F8 while the PC is booting, before windows loads, and the safe mode option will appear. If you can't get it to show, you may need to enter BIOS config and try it immediately after exiting.

Thanks for the replies guys. I got ethereal and I'm logging right now, but the leak disappeared, so that's kinda shitty. :/ I'm hoping that it will be back at some point so I can track it down and kill the related program.

I'll try the scan in safe mode too artkitty.

Alright, I'll admit it. I've been having an affair with your computer. Damn Ethereal. It's like the "Cheaters" of the computer world.

Try hitting Ctrl-alt-del, then checking the processes window to see what else is running. Make sure to check the 'show processes from all users' box (I'm assuming you're on XP).

Try the free AntiVer software. It will find all trojans.

HijackThis will find all running programs that Windows can't. BUT BE CAREFUL!!! Deleting files found must be done with complete care as you can delete registry files of good programs.

Zone Alarm will protect you from incoming hijackers.

AVG - another anti virus program that works well.
