hey people. here is a bust of cthulu i did up to appease the great sleeping lord. He was unhappy with the great many designs of him over the years, so hopefully he'll accept my supplications for succor.
hope you guys like it!
I like this, I really do, I like the hints towards the ancient cyclopian arcitecture, & I think it's a terrific design for a monster... however, it doesn't look like Cthulu to me. In his description in the original short story 'The Call Of Cthulu' Lovecraft describes the face as being just a mass of tentacles (or words to that effect), & I'm not getting that from your pic, plus I'm certain that there's no mention of teeth in the original text. It's still cool tho'
I'm going to second Staz on this one. Anyone that is familiar with HPL wouldn't recognize this as Cthulhu visually. Not to be too anal but you mispelled Cthulhu as well. You should check out the Wikipedia entry on Cthulhu to get a bit more background on the god. Great looking creature bust though.
i agree with the crits. but it is a nice design anyway. would love to see a full body version too
my old sketchbook
hey guys thanks for the crits. I can understand what you're saying about it not looking like cthulu, and im actually glad you said that. It was my intent to have him look different from the usual Cthulu.
i appreciate the need of change, but i mus admit i agree with the others.
Anyway, maybe it doesn't suit the (extremely vague) description, but the actual design is top notch imho, reminds me of Mignola's monsters, and i love the way the mandible reminds me of half-dolphin heads.About the geometric shapes in the BG, those perfectly suit the description, the aren't supposed to looks right.
I'd like to see more stuff
Okay, so it ain't Chtutchu, but it's still pretty sweet. He does feel like he belongs in the mythos. One thing i don't like is the tentacles: they look like overgrown earthworms and they don't flow together with the rest of the head. My 2 cents, to take or leave.
Hey let me just say that i like this version a lot, i'm kinda bored with the usual depictions of the great old one. One thing i always liked about Lovecraft were that he kept his visual descriptions vague, so i think this design does Cthulhu justice. Noone knows how exactly he's supposed to look, and i prefer badass over the standards - it's one monster where you can go all out and design as you see fit, which you did. Cool
It's still a cool looking bust but for the folks that aren't familiar with Lovecrafts description of the character here's his descriptionIf I say that my somewhat extravagant imagination yielded simultaneous pictures of an octopus, a dragon, and a human caricature, I shall not be unfaithful to the spirit of the thing. A pulpy, tentacled head surmounted a grotesque and scaly body with rudimentary wings... It represented a monster of vaguely anthropoid outline, but with an octopus-like head whose face was a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind. This thing, which seemed instinct with a fearsome and unnatural malignancy, was of a somewhat bloated corpulence...
— H.P. Lovecraft, "The Call of Cthulhu"
to once again post something completely superfluous: i second what john said, the descriptions are so vague, i always took that as an invitation to everyones imagination, it's quite boring that "fans" seem to have agreed on that pretty average design.
funny name = Lovecraft
look I dont know why I love you I just do
thanks for the replies. glad to see this striking a chord.
undertow- that description is actually describing a sculpture of cthulu, which is bound to look different than the real thing
Well ,let's be real about it: noone could witness or depict the true image of the Great Old One and come out of it the least bit sane. So we should be happy if this isn't "what he actually looks like". Don't see no future in slavering blind madness ...
nice design this painting has,...
