    artist: cbartrun
    concept:

An herbivore, the skittish "scrub-duster" forages arid grasslands, using its short trunk-like snout to unearth the roots of plants. Its blue fur serves as a camouflage against the evening and night skies and sparse vegetation. Its four fake eyes(to balance the three real ones) developed as decoys to its predators.

    Indigo Stalker
The Indigo Stalkers are a nasty little genetically-engineered replacement for the guard dog. Surprisingly light for their three-foot wide body, stubby legs are able to move them along flat surfaces faster than a man can run. Their three tentacles and hard sharp claws were originally added to the design as weapons, but the clever little fuzzballs, learned to use them are a secondary set of legs, allowing even faster movement- especially over rough terain and vertically via brachiation. The large triple eye set is sensitive to both infrared and ultraviolet spectra, giving them remarkable nightvision, even against active camouflage. While particularly vicious to intruders, they are remarkably affectionate towards their keepers, often cooing lovingly and rubbing against a keeper when scatched on the top of their "heads."

    concept:
    Grocid Beruloth
These creatures favor polar regions. They are adept aquatic hunters, and can leap from the water to glide great distances to flee predators or hunt for prey.
While swimming, their third eye is directed downward to watch for predators (like Orcas) attacking from below
When gliding, it is directed upwards to watch the skies.
Their fine blue fur helps both to insulate them from the extreme temperatures,
and also to help them blend in with the blue-gray arctic water. As Beruloths age, their fur whitens, and the creatures migrate towards ever icier climates.
Both poles contain large beruloth graveyards.

    Great Trepoos Bat
What the Great Trepoos Bat [also MarOgn] looks like and what they are ? Three eyes and blue fur – was the most common characteristics of the creature among the rescued members of the Trepoos 4 expedition – one of the most barren and hostile planets of the Trepoos system. That is where the expedition was attacked by an unidentified creature. The only existing image as well as a vivid description we owe to dr. Martin Ogntoff which as one of the few took a better look at the monsters and wrote about the encounter in his journal:
„… today we heard these “screams” again […] high in the mountains […] hard to describe – sounded like eagles but with much more growling near the end […] everyone, feels stressed. Dogs are very nervous every time these creatures are getting closer. Yesterday two of them run away for no reason at all. We found one of them later torn apart like if it exploded […] tomorrow we’re continuing along the path we found today […] first the dogs went crazy, even though we didn’t hear a thing, some of them broke the ties and ran away. Then we’ve hard these flapping sounds – like wings. But not one or two – sounded like hundreds of them, than the “sand storm” started coming from the flapping noises direction (even though the weather forecast said nothing) […] visibility decreased to almost none […] then we saw the first one – huge wings […] hole on the forehead – like an eye, apparently they were seeing us in spite of the sand. Grabbed two of our men, taking them in huge claw-like legs, killed other three […] horror […] after the attack one of them landed just next to me and started eating one of the bodies […] it’s back was all covered with blue fur, long tail…”

    aoikami
Colonists have named them aoikami, they're very gentle and curious creatures. Theyr'e strict vegetarians and can often be found around colony plantations, where they get fed by the farmers, who see them as a lucky charm. Some believe they make telepathic contact through their third eye (they're the only species on the planet that have this trait), but there hasn't been much research. It's true that in the presence of a aoikami, some people get headaches and strange visions.

    Trocynian Lion Worm
The Trocynian Lion Worm lives in the orange sands of kualawhatickiti. During the mating season the females of the species grow a mane of coarse blue fur. small clusters of the fur is rooted in nerve clusters that make the females "receptive" when stimulated by the males. The fur is blue in colour so they stand out in sharp contrast to the landscape making them easy to find for their mate. The presence of three eyes is to help with the mating process as well. The Lion Worms reproductive organs are an exceptionally complicated organ that requires perfect timing and accuracy. Having three eyes placed in an equalateral triangle allows them to precisely locate the "organs" of their mate for precision copulation through triangulation. The three sets of teeth are to grab ahold of each other once connected. They have to hold on tight once all the fun begins.

The Pygmy Skurva is a small burrowing mammal, known for it's extensive tunnel networks and it's piercing cries. Its diet primarily consists of insects, although it also feeds on plants from time to time. Inhabiting the rocky desert regions of the Yogunta Moon, it avoids its many natural predators with keen eyesight and warning cries from its neighbors. The Pygmy Skurva's bright blue mane and tail are used in communicating and in its well known, spastic mating rituals.

    concept:

Their origin is shrouded in mistery. Nobody knows where they came from or how they evolved but let's face the facts: These creatures have become the biggest plaque and annoyment humanity has encountered since medieval pestilence rats.
Rumors are that they were developed by the cosmetic industry to animal-test their products (AKA: "Ow, that shampoo burns my eyes). Later the military got interested, using those rats succesfully in spy operations (...and girls locker rooms). Enhanced with different chemicals and substances they became faster, stronger and more agile than their precessors. As a side effect of this artifical chemical enhancement their fur turned blue and they grew more aggressive.
Somewhere in their history some exemplars broke free ( probably flushed down the toilet by the laboratory-cleaning-lady) and they started to plague our towns...
But like mentioned, this is only a rumor and probably just another urban legend floating around in dusty bars around the world...

    Blofoor
This race was created by Karista, one of the most talented wizards of the city Alturag. The Blofoors are intelligent species, who can tell stories, riddles and tell what the future brings. They can't talk to people but they are telepaths. Karista was truly surprised that their creatures can so easily tell these stories. She didn't realised that she had created spiritualist creatures. Blofoors have three eyes. One eye can see the past, one can see the future and one can see only the present. That's why they are so talented. However, this talent was first noticed by the Lords of Alturag and then estimated as very dangerous. Finally made creatures and their creator doomed.

    Night Chaloomps
Territorial Marsupials very rare in the jungles of Mat-u-Atin, believed to be a myth these gargantuan breed have a unique addition to their anatomy other than their long blue fur. The all seeing third eye heightens the sense of foresight, allowing this mythical marsupial to not only sense danger from long ranges but it allows them to see the danger and actions before they happen. This mutation is rather advanced and is linked to the brains seperation...the Night Chaloomp contains a third section in the brain hidden in the middle between the left and the right. This section is what allows the highly advanced foresight to be achieved. The blue pigment of the fur is yet another adaptation of this gargantuan creature of the Mat-u-Atin jungle. The jungle contains large bright blue poisonous plants that most predators know to stay away from because just one touch can kill most living animals, but the Night Chaloomps are invulnerable to its secretion. The Chaloomp will hide within this plant for protection but a side effect is that it has stained the pigment of its skin to match the plants coloration, embedding the poison in the hair follicles.
Chaloomps move in pairs usually small families consisting of a dominant male and female and one offspring. They vary in size but adult males can reach 1200 pounds and stand upright at approx. 10 feet

    concept:
    Tokepi
Only very recently known to men, Tokepi is both bizar as it is beautifull. Five years ago it was accidentely discoverd in the Amazones by a small expedition of botanic researchers while search for rare orchids. Very little is know about its habits, for the creature lives only in high treetops and never goes near the ground. It seems to feed soley on nectar collected from wild flowers such as orchids, which the creature gathers by using its incredibily long tongue. The Tokepi live most of the time alone, but during breeding season they gather in large groups while using there brilliant blue fur to attract potential females.
Seemingly strange as it is already, the eyes is what makes the Tokepi truely bizar. For a very long time scientists where baffeled as why it had three eyes instead of the normal two most mammals have. They discoverd that the creature had no pupils, but eyes much like those of an insect. But by the very anotomy, the eyes are limited to see only one color at a time. The Tokepi thus needs three eyes in order to see normal colors. Each eye picks up a different primary color, which the brains mixes in subcolors when needed. Ofcourse much more research is needed in order to unraffel the mysteries of this unique animal.

    Vitio
Vitios are extremely large, dosile creatures. They don't move around too often because they have limited depth perception due to the single eye on their heads. However, they also have an eye on each 'hand', both of which exhibit a unique detection ability. They can change their focus to see through different matter densities. While they cannot communicate with humans, they have been domesticated and utilized by their owners to detect health threats such as cancer and other abnormalities. Each pet bonds with the owner in such a way that their behaviour is noticeably different (and sometimes destructive) when alarmed.

    Wave Cutter
This creature was found on the Earth Clone Planet "2nd Serve"...
As known scientists and experts of different disciplines exposed (?word) genetically manipulated animals, plants and other organisms on this planet thousand years ago...shortly after the experiment the first interstellar war began and the project was forgotten...
Centuries later the Peaceful Age started and mankind concentrated on higher aims than might and expansion...
A recent visit to the planet revealed amazing cognitions...under the influence of the special atmosphere and other planetary factors evolution proceeded in a strange way and with amazing speed and brought some very weird creatures on the surface...all of them originated from genes of terrestrial animals.
The photo shows a so called "Wave Cutter".
It's a huge flying mammal which flies close to the water surface of oceans and opens it beak, diving the bottom beak half into the water. This way it ploughs through the water and catches small fishes with its beak sack.
To navigate through the water and descry its prey the "Wave Cutter" has a third eye on the bottom side of the bottom beak half.
The eye is on the front, this way it can see underwater and look for fishes or other prey, while the 2 eyes can look where to fly...when prey is sighted the 3 eyes combine to a perfect view machine for a predator - no chance to escape!
Regarding the creatures anatomy and behaviour - the "Wave Cutter" sleeps upside down hanging on big branches - scientists assume that the "Wave Cutter" evolved from bats and pelicans, but can't comprehend how this combination could ever lead to a single creature...
But what can you expect from a race which was involved 1000 years in an interstellar war - caused by the avidity for material things?
    well...life find's a way...

OK - before voting/posting read this!!!

    1. Please give c&c or a reason why you voted for the image!

    2. Feel free to comment on any or all entries, the artists will appreciate it!

    3. No voting for your own entry!!! If a participants votes for his own entry, every member has the right to call him a stupid lame morone in this thread! And i will delete his/her vote anyway...

    not accepted entries:

    All WIPs

    Eriboss

There was no description and also not a clear design of 3 eyes...i had the feeling there are eyes everywhere and nowhere......sorry...

    Vampire Ninja
missing description and your phrase "I'm still working on this guy"...was the sign for me to interprete it as a WIP...though your creature looked as if it was shocked that i leave it in the thread...haha....

    newmanhyde
your entry is a plant...no creature...it would be a nice entry for POW...if we had it

    Sasa007
Ok...3 eyes...but where is the blue fur??? The ability of changing the fur and skin color is not a valid concept for this topic in my eyes...sorry...

    close to rejection:

    Gloklund
As much as i like your entry and art skills...it was a character actually, but your veteran status, the funny idea and the lovely execution won over the char rule

    special note:

    OtterFrenzy
In the posting thread at the top of your image there was the line:
"Here's my progress so far..."...that's confusing...just leave it, if you want your entry in the poll, if not, state it as a WIP...

    perineum
same goes for you ("Heres mine. The Three-Eyed Razorback Snarkelpuss(wip?) dont know if Im gonna go back in.")...what is "wip?" supposed to mean? Just state it clear...

well, it had been looking like JakkaS or Tom Garden for me for the longest time, but the Gloklund had to put that bit of "Brilliant!" up and snatch my vote

Oh gosh. For me it came down to the bat, the rat and the chicken. Bats almost always win out with me. Demonic clown faced bats, like ThirdEye's, especially. And even though the wing muscles are upside down, somehow this added to the weirdness like an upside down crucifix. White Wolf's blue rat with the eye attached was also really clever, I thought. Ultimately, Oddo's blue chicken won out because of the overall strength of the render, its passive, venus-flytrap predatory methods and the fact that although chickens are indeed stupid enough to decimate thier food source to extinction and starve to death, they have so much personality in their faces as birds go, and this guy is no exception. Plus, there was some risk involved taking feathers as fur; it could have gotten rejected for the poll, and yet Oddo really gave 110% effort despite the potential risk. That's called "believing in your idea" and I respect that.

I also liked Jakkas' and Gloklund's and Bruce Jensen's creature has tons of style.

I Voted for Rudzy. I like the concept. Nice and simple and I love that it comes across completely in the image. Needs no explenation. Everyone did fantastic though. Tyler_Lockett almost got my vote purely because of the texture but I love its facial expression as well. And Walnut, I really like the atmosphere of yours even though the environment is still rough. It has a very peacfull feel. Reminds me of orangatans in the rainforest. MIKECORRIERO, I love your style of rendering. I couldn't really tell the difference between the male and female though. I could ramble on for ages cause all of the entries were great, and then there was mine... er...

Woh, Lots of nice entries here, I voted for Gloklund, just too funny man, I laughed pretty hard when I read your concept. Jakkas your painting is done very very well and the concept is great, Bruce Jensen I really like your creature too, nice job on the painting. Tyler_Lockett I love the squirrel, very funny and cute in a strange way. MIKECORRIERO Nice job. rudszy I like your concept. Everyone else real nice paintings this round. This was a fun topic.

My vote went to Jakkas. I love the idea of past, present, future seeing eyes, and it is beautifully done and well presented.

Voted for Gloklund! Words cannot describe how amusing I find that image. He tied with Oddo (very nice concept, with such a soothing pallet), but humour won in the end.

The Boulder takes issue with that comment.

    I know

    Sasa007
Ok...3 eyes...but where is the blue fur??? The ability of changing the fur and skin color is not a valid concept for this topic in my eyes...sorry...

heheh I know,...I have rushed this to get it done without properly reading the description what was needed for this competition so at work(not having time to fix this) I uploaded this with a lil' help from Cerebrae.

Heh thet is reason why a silly description about color...

    Cheers

I voted for Fozzy. I like the colors, the sense of scale and just the rendering overall. Oddo's was a close second, beautiful picture. It has a great, soft style to it. I also really like thirdeye's, walnut's, and mikecorriero's. Good stuff.

Man, hard decision... lots of good entries...

in the end, fozzybears entry won my vote, for overall scale and color composition (altough I think this creature won't be able to fly anymore with its fur all soaked with water)...

JakkaS (the concept), Mike (nice to see something drawn from you), Thirdeye (nice render), Walnut (overall mood), Tyler (for sheer craziness), Oddo (painting style), Gloklund (humor), ceberae (structure and combo with background)... all awesome... but you know that already..

    Keep on rockin'!

Great entries all around.. though some seemed less furry than other.

The Shikami by Walnut won me over on the qualifications of the COW request and general cute value plus phyphic powers always good

Bruce Jensen@ You've got my vote, your creature was really a "blue" melancholy creature, i really liked that. One thing though: try to vary the design of your creatures more, your entries have a lot of similarities between them. Don't let that hamper you.

Goog & MasumiX@ Thanks for the vote and comment. Truly warms my heart.

Voted for Jakkas - Very strong concept and great render. I like that you had a purpose for each eye instead of making a creature with just one 'magic' eye (as the majority of people did). This could be another star for you. hehe

Voted for Jakkas, basically for the reason behind the 3 eyes and the great drawing.

Whoa, I'm stunned at the number of votes I've gotten so far. I honestly wasn't expecting anything considering the rules I broke. Thanks gang!! And one from Matt Dixon himself, thats crazy. Thanks Matt!! That made my day.

I like alot of the ideas for these creatures, but I really liked the simple and clever idea behind rudzsy's creature. I liked Jakkas', Bruce's, MIKEC and walnuts work as well but I kept coming back to rudzsy's for some reason, even though it was light in conceptual text.
