Merlin's sketchbook - Update September 25 - nudity
Well, here is some of my stuff. Some of you might have seen the first two already that I posted on my other account, that doesn't work anymore.
My first digital painting ever. Still need to put a highlight on the eyes.
This one isn't finished. I'm not going to finish it because I have worked on it for too long and it was getting difficult.
Right now I'm practicing the anatomy so that someday I hope to make some very cool characters without the use of reference, like some of you guys can do around here.
Sorry if my english is bad.

lovely start for your book! wonder why anybody hasn't replied yet... those digis are amazing. love how you did the hairline and the hand in the first one. and the full figure painting is really good, too. doesn't look unfinished to me (those shoes are amazing!). but your 4th (the pencil) is my absolute favourite. great rendering and you caught a very nice mood there, too. and the last one shows you have a lot more going on in your head. would love to see some more, but as i said, great start! see you, cheers,

stine - Thank you
Rottendegenerate - thnx. I don't learn much from painting over a picture. I used a reference.
bhanu - thanks man.
blacky - ha ha, I just gave it a try and something good came out.
Thestjester - yeah first one. thnx.
you want to see more... hmm don't have much. I could make a selfportrait.

Frank Wade - Thnx.
Here is some new shit.
Hand study, and a creepy finger, took me ages to render.

This a delightful surprise . Beautiful paints, almost thought the first one was a picture. Creepy texture on that finger, I like it.

I promised I'd visit your sketchbook during the meeting, so that is what I'm doing now some of the sketches I already saw in your sb, but those you did digital I haven't. I must say that they look really good! it was nice meeting you.

I like what you've got going here. Those digi's look amazing!
I think a thing you could work on is to try to mix photo reference with imagination, because what I've seen from you is eiter pure imagination or almost exactly from photo reference.
Also I see a lot of things in this SB that must have taken you very long to complete. Do some quicker things also, maybe just lines (as I'm trying at the moment).
I hope to see some more updates soon

NoŽ - Thanks. See below for some quicker things
oma - Thanks. Made it with PS the other one also
Here is an update. Started life figure drawing class a few weeks ago. I'm still very slow, all are 6 minute pose sketches, but never realy get to the head and feet. Also added some abstract stuff (fun to do), two pages from my real sketchbook, study from photo ref and a selfportrait. All not finished yet.
October 4th, 2006 #16
Forgot to add this one. Figure drawing done without reference to practice. The anatomy is not very correct, but I still wanted to show you to see if i'm improving when I post my next no ref figure drawing.

I was sure it was a paint over!
Haha, that's freaking amazing for a first digi. But you used some ref, right? RIGHT? Did you color pick? SERIOUSLY, DID YOU COLOR PICK?!
I'll keep an eye on your sketchbook for sure Maybe a little more paintings from your mind would be nice. But keep em coming dude.

rorke - Thanks
Ulver - Thanks
TheGnoll - Thanks. I can be very patient sometimes, but It will also go very, very slow. Whished I could be faster, still working on that.
redehlert - Thanks man.
Pesmerga - Thanks. Yeah I used a photo as reference. Ha ha, the color picker was tempting, but I didn't use it. My drawings and paintings from my mind are crap. But I'll post if it's worth showing.

Last week I went to a dutch sketchmeeting in Amsterdam at SOEPEL.EU. There was a model. The first sketches I did where crap. So here are two that where a little bit better.

oma - I'll answer your question when i have more time, got to go now.
Figure in action study, from reference, with pencil.

Sorry for not posting earlier. I kinda forgot to subscribe to this thread, and then I thought I had..
On that last figure, those hands both look a bit too small, especially the front one. They're about the same size as well, which seems a bit wierd as one hand is further back than the other one.
I can't find any other flaws really
And as I said to you on googletalk don't be afraid to post the stuff you think is "pure crap" because if you also post the stuff you don't like, we're able to create a better image of what you can do very well and what you need to practice more.. It will give you better crits in the end I think.
Sweet stuff!! I love how you did the shadows in the picture oma pointed at. It must've taken you ages though
