VOTING!! Teen Challenge #7
The topic was Cybernetic Samurai. Vote for your favorite!
Not accepted entries:
TheGnoll and Tigermilk - good WIP's, but not finished enough for the poll.
Sung-jae Kim - Sorry, but like you said yourself, you missed the whole "cybernetic" part of the topic. It's a nice character design of a samurai, but I can't really accept a piece that only meets half of the criteria.
Everyone else, AWESOME work this round. Seriously. The next topic will be up soon, and I hope you all continue this level of great entries.
Speaking of which, post suggestions for round 8's topic here if you have any. (WolfBane seems pretty adamant about "war god" though, so chances are that's what it'll be if i see some support. )
Good luck voting, it'll be a tough choice this time around.

mine went to sir green sock, absolutley loved the composition and colors. close second was a 3 way tie between lewis (wonderful design but tighter rendering would've gotten it), hunter (all around money but a bit unfinished looking), and luxun (loved those colors and the fx on sheild but action shots win ).
the rest ill throw out some crits as I see them, wolfbane, I love the lines but the rendering I think could have used a little more contrast and I'm not too sure how the testure brush is working out, maybe tone it down a bit.
Plate, your image isn't working for me but going on your most recent version in the challenge thread, the overall form looks a bit flat, maybe use 2 point perspective to give a little depth, the design reminds me of tron in a good way.
Prophet, nice rendering but the anatomy is looking odd around the neck and shoulder, also I'm wondering how he gets around on the gound with those feet.
Evil Sloth, I like your colors and pose but the arms get lost in the fan/flag backpiece.
Keng, props to you for going purely traditional though it looks as if the samurai is standing on a different plane than the rest of the drawing becuse the perspective makes it seem as if the viewer is looking down at him but the rest is at eye level.
the design is nice and very functional looking although the rendering could be tighter and it dosn't really read as a samurai at first.
Phantomblase you ahve a very tight rendering but the pose looks very stiff, almost verorlike painting there, very nice.
androz, I like the more biomech approach you took but I wouldn't want to go into a futureistic feudal battle w/o a shirt, the pure black shadows flatten the image out too imo.
shamblingcat, the helmet makes me think warhammer 40k tau when i see it but they're ripped off samurai too, tighter rendering would make it a lot nicer
if anybody thinks I'm with the crits keep in mind I'm pretty much an art n00b as well and am not speaking from any sort of expertise so take them with a grain of salt, if I really pissed you off we can go out back and fight. as for the next round I don't mind what topic although I think we should go balls out and make full illustration a prerequisite for the finished piece, best of luck to all in the next round and hope to see the same caliber work from everyone.

Wow, I finished mine just in time 0.0
For another WOW, this is near imposible to choose a vote for 0.0
I think I'll..
I'll put my vote towards luxun. I think design wise it's my favourite and the skill is there to back it up like a rocket launcher might back up an m-16. The colours are also great, nice bright pallet.
Great job everyone. Absolutely mind blowing collection of work in this thread. Hats off to you all!

It was very tough to choose on this one, but I ended up going with xHunterx. Despite the sketchiness around the legs, the colors, textures, and overall style are what really caught my eye.
Second place goes to sirgreen sock. I love the composition and light trails, but I'm having an incredible amount of trouble figuring out how that guy swung his sword with his arms in that position. To me it looks more like he's ready to swing, rather than following through on a swing.
Overall, there was an excellent turnout on this challenge. I hope that after school gets out I'll be able to put some real effort into these. As for the next topic, I missed the last vehicle challenge, so I wouldn't mind something along those lines. Airship maybe?

I went for hunter, the dot texture kinda threw me off but i really liked the originality. Wolfbane was a close second, really digin the dreads and the cloth thing going on.
sweet work everyone.

This was a really hard choice for me to make, XhunteX, Luxen, wolfbane, and Sirgreensocks, tough decision man, I voted for xhunterx, love his palette and his concept was really strong. I liked how he kept a looseness with his brushes, Same with Luxen and Sirgreensock. Great job everyone,

Greensock gets my vote! Awesome action there!
Everyone did a reeeaally great job!
EDIT: How about "A roman warrior in action" as topic for the next one? Getting some cool action poses and so on in there.

these are really good.. Props to you all. both for working this hard and paying attention to helping each other get better.
My Vote went to Wolfbane. I like the clarity of the design. It is put together the most like an actual character concept to be modeled from.
and the irrational reason is that I am a costume designer, and its a cool costume....looks like some research into samurai armour actually went into.

Great job everyone!
My vote went to hunter, stunning design and execution, albeit the legs could still be cleaned up.
Close second was wolfsbane for the impressive design!
Crits for the rest:
Plate - cool design, definitely reads well. Not too fond of the solid black background, and think the forms could have been pushed for more depth.
luxun - nice design and stunning colours, whats bugging me the most is the legs seem awfully short, and maybe the shirt and hat could have been tweaked more to be less anachronistic.
invincible wombat - Nice dynamic pose and cool sword. Colours came off pretty neutral and dull, I'd push the colours more, maybe the highlights too for more depth of form.
evil sloth - Liking your technique. the colours came out well, too. Overused the textures a bit I think, background especially distracts and flattens the guy.
Keng- Good work so far, i'd like to see it polished up and finished. For the future, stay away from the metallic gels, they scan like crap.
dile - like the character and pose, black lines flatten the design though, use value and modelling to show division in those forms, this way looks a bit sloppy.
phantom blaze - overall has good design and impact. Overuse of bright white highlights and black shadows flattens the form more than anything now.
lewis - this one has a lot of potential, I dont think its finished yet. Clean it up and give a touch of strong highlights to make the form and metals pop and you'll have a real strong piece.
andorz - very few clues to read the fact he's a samurai, but cool nonetheless. Stay away from the pure black shadows, doesnt work too well.
prophet - nice design and mood, the hands and face throw me off though, could have been pushed further.
Flaskpost - really digging the character and attitude, wish it was more finished though, has so much potential for awesomeness!
shamblingcat - another good design and idea that should have been finished. The whites are too white and the shadows too black, gotta work out that balance!

Pokemon=no, I was actually thinking about entering the next one .
BTW, I voted for hunter, the peice was just too well executed to be ignored.
Also, kudos to luxun and SirGreenSock, both great entries.
can't wait for the next round!!!!

Seems like everyone here is down and comfortable with simple character design, how about we turn this into a real challenge for most of us and illustrate an actual scene, illustration, narrative while at the same time leaving it open.
For example, envision how the typical fantasy world would have developed and evolved by the time the 19th century rolls around (maybe work with the contradiction of magic vs. steam and guns, or how they adapt together). That'd be open enough to create a scene with characters interacting, or an environment, or just a simple scene where the character himself is the focus.
By the way, hopefully the due date for the next topic will be some time AFTER the workshop, dont want a conflict of interests on my part.

I like Greensock's idea. Painting scene is way more challenging than just a character and offers so much more wiggle room
May 28th, 2006 #28
Same here, I say orc scene would be tight, and about the final submission date, I'm not going to Montreal, but I do start my first job, and I have drivers ed, and weightlifting. And besides, more time = better quality entries.
