Thanks very much for the comment. As there is not real art community to belong to locally for me, this site is my support structure for critiques, learning, and inspiration. I appreciate the motivation you have given me to update more.

One thing you might find useful, when you scan in your pics in Photoshop try adjusting the levels. (The tool is under Image>Adjustments>levels) Play around with the sliders to darken your graphite and whiten the paper. Otherwise the paper looks a bit smudgy. (Or you could try and smudge it less when drawing..but that's harder.)

Try a lot more life drawing, to pin down anatomy and some other basic things like foreshortening.

Good to see you checking Loomis out btw, he rocks big time. Keep drawing dude!

    Mentor Work

My CA mentor is Rabid Peanut (Thomas Hunt - http://www.rabidstudios.org/).
Below are assignments I have done for the mentor program.

    Action

    Sitting

    Laying

    Holding A

    Holding B

One of our assignments was to draw a blob creature, I created a creature that lures insects in with it's flower appearance. It is a carnivore thats sits on vegetation or branches.

Below is what I came up with:

Id like to see more form in your people not just outlines. I can't really tell if you understand the structure under the skin. its almost as if you are drawing the space around the people instead of the solid forms of the people. While this is a valid exercise adn can be quite usefull I think you would benifit from thinking about the bones and connections that make up the forms.... wait you have a superb mentor,.... I'll shut up now

Thanks for the tip Cold, I really admire your work.

Here are 2 items I have done recently. The creature is part of a assignment from my CA.org mentor Rabid Peanut. The person holding the sword was a really well done drawing until I added clothing. hehe. It was a quick sketch though and fun to do.

Smile Practice in drawing is always fun...

I am practicing my lines and armor/clothing. I need to search more reference on cloth and how it acts.

I need to work hard on toes, fingers, and drawing bigger. I couldn't get the facial features I wanted for the two on the left because the head was so small.

Looking good Wheezy! Your are making some very good progress, just keep up with those studies...if necessary do studies of just hands, or feet or whatever really frustrates you. I belive you mentioned cloth, a good excercise is to place cloth over something in different positions so it is sometimes folded and sometimes hanging. If you do do studies of cloth your going to have to render them with shadow or else the depth won't connect and that is what cloth is all about. I love watching this stuff!

    Wink Thanks so much Rabid!!!

I have taken a lot from your mentoring Rabid and will continue to work on any knowledge or suggestions you pass my way. You are a inspiration and so is your massive Puppeteer poster hanging framed above my desk.

For anyone reading this, Rabid is Thomas Hunt, please visit his site RabidStudios.org.

I have had a abundance of inspiration lately. I received two things I wanted very badly for xmas this year.

    1. The Marco Djurdjevic DVD from CA.org
    2. The Techniques of Puddnhead Volumn 1 Creature Design and Drawing. by (Kevin Llewellyn)

    I am having a blast.

5 Things I need to work on:
    1. Anatomy (Hands)
    2. Rendering
    3. Drawing larger, I find myself running out of room for detail and rendering.
    4. Composition (focal points)
    5. TAKING MY FUCKING TIME. I rush too too much.

Here are a couple things I have done recently beyond studies of hands, heads, and gesture which I don't plan on scanning in.

    The Lich

    The Battle Stance

    Thanks Jin!

Well I am trying my hand at this week's CHOW 102 The Plague Doctor. What better way is there to have fun and practice than to participate in the CA.org weekly CHOW?

    Cow CHOW 103 Evil Genie

The single hardest concept to conquer in digital painting is: PATIENCE

Here is my sketch for the past CHOW 103 which I did not finish the painting enough for entry, but will post it here as soon as I am done. At this point the longer it takes me to paint this chow the better in my opinion, because the more I learn. I have a feeling I will get more efficient at digital painting the more I do them.

I see the great artists of the CHOW churn out work the first day a topic is released like they shit out pixels and it is amazing. I have a lot of respect for my fellow CHOWers. Even though I only lay out a sketch every week I feel like I am in the game, even if I cant get the color out in time for the vote.

I like how your attacking more interesting poses, keep it up and definetly get some friends to pose for you. Even if you already made the pose you want, by having somone imitate it in front of you it really helps anyone out when making corrections and double checks...

I can tell you are really putting the key points on those DVD's into practice. I like how you are capturing these characters in mid pose, like they are half way through their full action....really gives them personality!

haha awesome! ape/beetle and nazi jelly fish. Keep drawing crazy things like that! I commend you for posting random stuff and not being afraid to show them with pride =) As for anatomy you definitely need work.

Work on your foundations a bit. its a bit boring but when artists start out, do you know why they draw the boring tea cups, wine bottles, cylinders, cubes, and cloth? so they can get better at observation and proportions as well as understanding light and applying the right amount of medium on the canvas.

I like what you have because your not afraid to show your early stage work and that shows that you have strong characteristics as an artist. Keep up the good work and never stop drawing! =)

Just draw your ass off. Whatever you do, don't -- stop -- drawing...

I am always too lazy to scan...

It has been a while since I have posted to my CA.org SB. Thanks Rabid and Maerrick for the awesome input. I have been taking some art classes offered through various organizations in Raleigh, NC. I am trying to get better at telling a story with my drawings more than them being stiff and just floating in space. It is hard, but it is fun. Thanks for visiting my SB, I will be updating more often, I have 2 sketchbooks filled since I last posted so....

    Still Learning

I have been doing a lot of studies and life drawings to improve my understanding of what I see in my mind and around me. I am slowly getting away from floating figures, but it is hard. I am drawing a lot larger, a couple of these were done on 11x14 Bristol.

Many thanks to all of you who I learn so much from on this site, and thank you Massive Black for this site's existence.

    Learning Photoshop

I begin Bobby Chiu's digital painting class tomorrow. I am hoping to gain much improvement from it and plan to really work hard on every piece of knowledge he gives me.

So here are a couple things I have been trying to paint lately.

    Learning by doing.
