    Book cover pricing?

I'm having a copy of the Graphic Artists Guild Handbook send to me, but I would really appreciate some thoughts on this.

A Japanese publisher has contacted me because they want to use on of my already made illustrations on the cover of a new book about Time Travel, Time Paradox and Relativity Theory. It's a popular science book and it's a medium to large publisher (trying to assess that at the moment).

I have provided some illustrations for full pages in magazines, but a bookcover is new for me, and most of my references for fees are in the design and architecture field. For these assignments I would normally consider, among other things, complexity of requirements, expected time, meetings, revisions etc. In this case however, we are talking about something that is already done, and in a field that might charge a bit differently.

The price should be for the cover illustration only, graphic design is done by a separate company.

    I have seen these threads

    and

And I'm of course checking some people around me that might have local information - But I was wondering if people would have more information to consider.

    cheers,

find out what that publisher normally would pay for comissioned art...
(here in the states, that ranges from $1000-$5000.
typically, closer to $2500 for a large publisher.)

    ...and then charge them half.

though, it's "ok" to go a little lower, since its just free money anyways.

    I'll second that.

"Pick-up" or secondary rights are often half of what a commission would be.

Ok, that helps a lot. Thanks both of you. I take it that would be the price for non-exclusive usage and for one edition only (not including reprints)?
