    Fire Starter: Flinthulk

Here is a concept creature that I originally did for the C.O.W. "Fire Starter" topic, but I didn't finish it until this evening. Only a week late!

Anyway, the concept is that the Flinthulk is mineralvore--it consumes only certain kinds of rock deposits using its molten drool to soften the stone, then chewing them with its multiple sets of powerful jaws.

Flinthulks gravitate towards molten environments that do most of their digestive work for them. Due to the extreme heat, Flinthulks have formed thick scales created from their high mineral content sweat. These massive slabs of flint-like (hence the name) stone along the Flinthulk's spine grow continuously until they break off, and produce great flaming sparks when ground together. Also, to endure the low-oxygen environments, their vast lungs are externally exposed on their sides, just below the ribcage and above the hips. These are well-vented through wide pores to improve air flow and keep the delicate organs from overheating.

Humans, though not directly threatened by the docile creatures, have hunted Flinthulks mercilessly to defend highly flammable grass and woodlands from the forest fires inadvertantly started by the beasts as they travel, showering sparks in all directions.

Thanks, gug. Yeah, I'm liking that drool myself.

Just got to work and I'm looking at this on an LCD monitor rather than my CRT at home, and man, it's amazing how much difference there is in the color. Looks way more saturated here than it did on my trinitron. Maybe a bit too rainbowy...

Never did thank Seasonreaper for the comment. So...thx!

Now that I'm looking at this again, I'm thinking the areas around the reflected light coming from the lavadrool are going a bit grey. Anyone else think so?
