Bohemian: Always love it when you stop by!

Camara: I am very much inspired by traditional fairy tale illustrators. Some of their work is just astounding. Arthur Rackham is a favorite as well as Ivan Bilibin.

this is a very lovely SB you have. i like the classical feel of your work, everything has a nice fluid movement even the monstrous creatures, very nice!

So this is where you've been posting new stuff. Clearly CA is the place to be. As always, I love your graphite work and textures, and can't wait to see more.

Bohemian: You know, I have no idea how my mind works. I just go with it. Not knowing the final outcome of a piece is half the fun.

Camara: He's definitely one of the best. I'm constantly inspired. Thanks for the comments

SA: he he heeee. where's your sketchbook? We just went to Ikea and they had "Billy" bookshelves and furniture. I can just imagine a team of designers hiding in the corner of his apartment studying his mannerisms to create a stylish, yet reasonably priced collection of furniture that would appeal to cave dwellers.

Really trippy last update, the watercolor treatment gives it an old school kids book feel :0 (childhood memories coming back). Your sketches from post 93 are really tight, the ink one is great, the pencil i like even better. Nice stuff grack.

I drew this for the Dragon Con Quick Sketch Competition. The premise of the contest was that participants had 45 minutes to complete a drawing of anything they chose. A winner is then picked from the group for "best individual character" and "best comic page." I was very excited to be chosen as the winner in the "best individual character" category.

Nice. Did you win anything, or was it just prestige? I had a friend trying to convince me to go to Dragoncon, but my schedule wouldn't allow it... I had a lot of stuff going on.

Wow, thanks for all the comments everyone. I've been hard at work on a secret project which will be released shortly. I'll have sketches and images ready when I can post them.

BC: I won a certificate and also the judge said he would publish a piece of my work in his comic book. He didn't tell me the name of it, but he is an art director for a small publishing company. I'll have more info when I hear back from him.

Wheezy: Things have been very busy, in a good way. I just finished a freelance project, I'm about to complete another personal project and I have a solo exhibition opening in November. I've had my work cut out for me I'll stop by the NC thread and tell you guys more about it.

AmontilladoAG: Thanks for the comments! and the stars!

    RandAlThor: Thanks for stopping by.

alesoun: You owe me nothing, I live to serve (well, not really. I mostly live for art, sleep, and sushi - not necessarily in that order)

Ok guys, here is one image from a freelance character illustration I just completed (graphite):

I worked on this guy a bit more:

I documented some of my progress for my Last Man Standing 3 entry.

This is the absolute first draft, rough as it gets initial sketch:
    Name: LMS3roughsketch.jpg
Views: 256
Size: 120.9 KB

Here is the polished sketch with the beginning colors laid down for the hair:
    Name: LMS3sketch1.jpg
Views: 249
Size: 124.1 KB

Here I've completed the hair with more watercolor layers and final colored pencil detail. The same process is used to complete each section of the piece. The foliage in the foreground is finished and I'm laying the ground work for the dress and a bit of the smoke. At this point, I wasn't sure exactly how I was going to treat the smoke, so I continued with other elements. The dress was pretty clear to me and I made up a pattern that would contrast with the angular plants.
    Name: LMS3sketch2.jpg
Views: 250
Size: 155.2 KB

Here I have started to move up to the smoke area. I've decided on the base colors and I know the over-all effect that I want. I used a variety of blues and grays with a touch of bright yellow-green. I'm thinking at this point to make the edges are more gray and less saturated so that the focus will remain on the demon mouth. A bit of bright yellow around the central mouth reminds me of this while I work on the outer ring of smoke.
    Name: LMS3sketch3.jpg
Views: 248

And many hours and hand cramps later, we get this:

Your LMS piece is gorgeous, Grendel! Your colors, and the strong design elements you used throughout the piece- not to mention the concept- are all extremely inspiring. Thanks for sharing your progress. : )

seriously though theres not enough detail. you should really focus on your color theory and line quality both in which you need serious help with....... am i saying!?!? Guggs and KU said you were good but god damn it.

Still have yet to meet you at the minis but I have seen you on the forum.

you really have some wonderful work
thank you for posting the process for the LMS III

it would be great to finally see ya at some point.

    keep up the good work

Yeah I agree, your LMS entry really stood out among the rest - quite beautiful and I just can't stop staring at it. Saved to my Inspiration folder right away. Thanks so much for showing the WIPs but still, your technique is a mystery to me!
