Here are some of the WIPs from my "Chicks Who Draw Chicks" pin-up calendar entry. I used watercolor and colored pencil on hot pressed watercolor paper:

I started with a light watercolor underpainting then put in some darker values. After I had the basic colors down, I started with the colored pencil.

not seeing many responses in here but it really needs to be said that you're doing an awesome job braving the world of color. all the catl wander about, restless in eager grack-ticipation. OK maybe as a vocabulary-smith i'm not the best but i know that i like what i see here.

my friggin subscriptions have been actin up so this is the first i've seen of much of this stuff--> great job on this doodle... the red on the yellow is a good combination for angry work doodling i.m.o. of course, the TD entry is a delight and the paintings that you posted (what size are they?) seem to be a nice organic exploration. One minor crit for all the color stuff would be to maybe conciously try to emulate the color scheme of some art piece that you really like and try to replicate it. in the larger paintings they seem to be on more of a yellowish green area of the slider which might need to be neutralized with some warmer tones.

keep up the awesome work...we're looking forward to your visit!

    Thumbs up

Grack, darling.... I freaking love your stuff. Seriously. You have a beautiful sense for value (something that I'm desprately trying to work on!). I'm trying to break into watercoloring as well, so I wish you luck... I need to learn how to work faster.

    I'm watching this thread, btw.

Bohemaian: Thanks, m' dear. If you ever want any crits or advice about watercolor I'd be happy to help. It's a bit tricky at first, but once you get the hang of it, you can create some really interesting effects. I also had a problem with working really slow, but I just practiced pushing through a piece as quickly as possible and eventually I became faster. It helps to lay out a fairly detailed sketch. Once you get that out of the way, decide on your color palette. Then when you have all of those elements the piece goes much more quickly.

Reaxion: Thanks, man. Here's a new sketch for this week's COW:

A lot of your work reminds me of art nouveau, or in particular Mucha's work. Lovely, oh and grats on the calendar win.

Have you ever thought about branching out more in terms of style and subject? It seems like you could totally rock as a character/fashion concept artist and I would love to see some architecture or vehicle designs in an art nouveau style.

Ideas are easy. Making them real is hard.

This book needs a lot more love from others than it has been getting! Where are the comments, people?!

Your linework and textures are absolutely delicious. I love your in-progress works, especially creature from Jan 14th, I enjoy seeing how you build these up. I'd love to see more of the exploratory watercolor studies you've been doing and of course, I thought your calendar entry was one of the most delicate and atmospheric in the bunch.

A great book, I can't wait to see it grow

Chirp Chirp: Art nouveau is a favorite style. As far as branching out is concerned, I really do love costume design. I used to be a backstage technician and did the whole drama club thing in high school. I'm really interested in fashion (in a conceptual way, not in terms of what I wear) and I think it would be really fun to work on a movie designing costumes. Architecture, unfortunately, is a weak spot at the moment. I'm really working hard to try to round out my style. I'll be sure to post my progress.

Steph: Thanks for the comments! I always enjoy seeing how other people work, so I've been documenting my progress on certain projects. I also think it's quite handy to compare the unfinished and completed pieces in order to examine what could have been done better and to determine what elements are working. That's something that really helped with the calendar piece. I learned a lot from painting it, I feel that the next project will be better because of it.

This is my entry for the "Hairy Beauty" COW.

    Here is the WIP:

    Name: hairybeastcopy.jpg
Views: 678
Size: 147.0 KB

    And here it the final:

    Name: hairybeastfinal.jpg
Views: 678
Size: 160.8 KB

This was my first digital painting. I'm totally new to creating stuff on the computer. I recently got a wacom tablet and it's been quite fun playing around and experimenting with different brushes. I know there is quite a bit that could be improved, but I had fun and learned a lot. I just wish I had time to participate more often.

Lovely creatures, man. Really really great!
Only crit would be to check up a wee on human leg anatomy, the lower part of your characters seem to be a bit weaker than the upper part.
    Keep up the fine work!
