    concept:

Firestarters are small, reclusive, and rather tempermental creatures, considered both a bane and blessing of the common household. They find their way into people's homes, most often during the winter, and make a permanent nest in the fireplace. A Firestarter never has to leave once they move in, because all they ever eat is hot ash, and the home owner is careful to feed wood/paper into the lair for burning now and then, lest it come out in search of fuel aroud the house. The black spots on it's translucent skin are created from the ash it consumes, and it indicates when the thing is growing hungry once again.
This is can often be a good thing for the homeowner as well, for they have a near continual fire going during the cold nights of winter. This is not so wonderful in the summer, but attempts at removing firestarters are rarely succesful and often disastrous. One attempt, in which a man threw a bucket of water over the small creature in order to make the starter's lair less desirable, resulted in the burning down of the whole neighborhood and quite a bit of the surrounding woods. No one could get back into the area for two months, either, as so many firestarters had gathered to eat what was left.

    The Speckled Lensmoth
This tropical moth is so called due to it's large quadular wings each containing a natural crystaline lens, which is used for the moth's feeding procedure.
A Lensmoth will position itself on a plant in a sunny area, and focus light though it's wings onto the lower leaves and branches, causing the sap of the plant to burst though the skin from heat.
Although these lens tend to atrract larger predators such as birds, the Lensmoth can temporarily blind an attacker with a complex flurry of it's wings.
Unfortunately, recent illegal import of the moth into the tinder-dry outback of Australia has started many fires, some of them catastrophic.

    Vascrim Devaco
Every year in the same time starts season of fire. It is season when Devacos copulate, which is very danger for nature. Devaco male (18m long) has two sort of special salivary glands which void chemicals when he copulate or when he is very agressive. These glands are on his back between massive bony disks. Two voied chemicals are safe but when they joint together, they start to burn! Disks keep the fire only at his back where is safe for him, but not for others.

    Kraetus
Kraetus, also known to the local diamond miners of South Africa as the Fire Starter, is a large, vicious insect. They are found in the lowest regions of the earth, as close to the earth’s core as possible to withstand the extreme heat. They feed off the lava. This creature is highly protective of its lair and will kill at will when it feels a threat by man.
When threatened, they will gather a hunting cluster of male Kraetus. To ensure a surprise attack, they curl into a ball and, at very high-speeds, will roll through the tunnels to destroy the miners. Then they will spring from their ball state to all fours for their attack.
The male Kraetus have the ability to breath a small flame from their mouth, which they will use kind of like a pilot light. They also have a frontal pouch in their throat where their semen is stored. Through a small mouth-like opening in their throat, they will spit boiling semen through the flame, which in turn, is ignited into a napalm-like substance. The victims are instantly engulfed in flames and burning flesh before they even know what hit them.
This is the main reason why diamonds are so expensive.

    Savannah Kindler: Conflagarus Africanus (Female)
Once this rather elusive and rather secretive species was found a great mystery was at last solved.
Only during the driest, hottest months of the year does the Kindler emerge from deep below ground. The baked earth crumbles before it as weak fore legs and a hardened frontal protrusion dig to the surface. Only a single female will emerge as the remainder of their species waits. Making it's way to the nearest tree, it climbs to a branch which holds the most shade for two apparent reasons; first as camouflage, yes, but also knowing that amidst the blasting heat something will take refuge there.
When at last the unwary victim stops to find some relief the kindler opens it's maw wide. This action primes the three main organelles in it's mouth. Each organelle is complimented by it's own lung. Once in place the female gimbles the organelles then with a rushing exhale plasters her victim with saliva.
The saliva itself is like none other in the natural world. Containing trillions of times more mitochondria than a single living cell, the saliva could be considered an incindiary gel. For when the mitochondrian make contact with their victim in their 'dormant' state a small fragile membrane around it is ruptured. This rupture is critical, for then the sugary, oxygen rich saliva begins to feed these small powerhouses, which in turn create massive amounts of heat in a relatively miniscule amount of time. The victim is fully engulfed in moments and roasted alive. The female will patiently wait, then dislodge herself from the limb and begin to gorge.
Moreover, in a macro sense, in the throes of it's own death many of the prey touch off the wildfires that sweep the brittle savannah. The fires roast alive all in their path and when they are done the remainder of the Kindler species emerge to feast, for they have a penchant for one element among the rest, carbon.

The Lioth lizards of planet Nardan have the strange abilty to breakdown water into Oxygen, which they release, and hydrogen which they retain in their bodies in large inflating stomach sacs. This allows the little creature to bob about like ballons and steer with their multiple fins.
They have become the pampered pets of the settlers on this planet, due to the fact that they glow intensely at night and when tickled emit firestarting belches. The Lamplighters of the city use them, as well as all the people traveling from party to party for the wonderful night life of the city.
Many varieties of these lizards have been bred for thier different glowing colors and their placid nature. they feed on vegetable and lots of water and if cared for properly can life thirty or forty very useful and decorative years. This example is the pet of the Blue Clan, and as such wears their colors on it's elaborate jeweled leash.

    Caped Moth
    Anatomy
The 2 distinct features of these creatures are their large abdomen and lengthy 'cape' extending from their thorax. Because of the size and weight of their abdomen these moths can't sustain high altitude flight, and consequently hunt and fly quite close to the ground. In their natural habitat this is not a problem - measuring approx 10 inches from head to tail, they're situated near the top of the insect food chain.
    Why the cape?
Camouflage. In areas of leafy debris, the cape covers its large abdomen, and blends in with the surroundings. This makes it look like an injured insect, and consequently attracts scavenger insects to feast upon. This also means it won't need to chase food, as it's generally fairly slow.
    Fire hazard
In the current state of human expansion these creatures have been forced into residential areas. This is where the problem occurs. Pest control is essential and fire insurance has more than tripled in these neighbourhoods. As low flyers, their thin cape is highly susceptible to catching on fire if it comes in contact with lit candles, bug zappers, or even the hot globe of a lamp. Without any senses in the cape, the moths will continue flying, dropping flaming segments as it travels. Every now and then the fire falls with these portions, leaving the moth with life intact and a ravaged cape to show its victory. However, most times the fire reaches its fibrous abdomen, sending a flaming moth to its death on nearby carpet, grass or other surface. Unless witnessed and hastily doused, this usually results in a housefire.

    the methanoth
Methanoths are very bizarre creatures. they have this odd abilitiy to do what is very similar to circular beathing. they breathe in through their noses and mouths continusiouly while their body converts it into methane gas which is released through the tubes in their backs.
unfortunately for these creatures, sometimes the methane gas ignites sending them either flying into the air like a chaotic balloon to crash into the ground destroying anything within a 10 mile radius on impact, or they simply explode with the same ammount of devestation. (we'll never forget the chernobyl disaster)
chunks of bone and blubber have also been found on top of crushed cars up to 50 miles away from an explosion.

This strange looking creature is not a lobotomised frog but more more like a lizard. It has a very unique way in which it hunts. Gathering bile and undigested material, i.e. fur bones hair, from its stomach. It is able to expel them as a blob at high velocity with amazing accuracy. This is due to the wind sacks on its back, which propel the blob thought the hole on the front of its head. This hole has a third eyelid which it can close to prevent dirt and sand clogging its stomach. The blob when expelled can be ignited due to the combustive nature of the creature’s stomach acid . This creature has to ignite to blob at a safe distance, as it’s not immune to fire itself. This is possible due to rod on top of its head, which acts like a flint. It lives in areas that are not prone to fire i.e. deserts and rocky areas.
Lonely men are attracted to the creature.

    concept:

These little creatures are harmless on their own. They live most of their lives high in the atmosphere. They have a expandable sac that inflates with various gasses produced internally. This allows them to drift along. To keep balance in the air, they vent out some of these gasses through a sphincter at the top of their sac.
The nickname "firestarter" is a misnomer. They don't directly create fire themselves. Every year, these creatures come down to ground level to mate. The males will attract females by puffing themselves up and doing quick little darting dances.
Like locusts, there are certain years where they multiply in huge numbers. When this happens, the density of creatures is so high that the constant moving around creates static electricty. This in turn ignites the methane emmisions and creates little bursts of fireballs.
From a distance, it is quite a beautiful scene. There have been occasions where the population is so dense, that local dry brush may sometimes catch fire.

    Megaterminidae pyromancus aka Giant Thermite
An ill-advised experiment in logging tried to creat an organic, self repairing tree clearing device. Internal gas sacs created bouyancy to overcome the bological limits on size in arthropods, enabling a fully grown adult to be 1.5 meters at the shoulder, as well as altering the animals' body chemistry to make them very heat-resistant. This proved to have a disastrous side effect, however. Within four generations, the species developed the ability to produce a white phosporous like fluid in it's rear bouyancy sacs, and in five generations the thermites could secrete this fluid onto their whips. Though not aggressive, the remaining Thermites must be kept in carefully controlled preserves almost all the time, as any flammables that come in contact with the whips are highly likely to ignite. They are not without uses as a species however- a young male specimen nicknamed "Smokey" has proven amenable to training, and has actually proven useful during forest fires, as he can indeed clear dried, dead, and burning trees far faster than traditional methods.

    concept:
    Pyroflatulatoris
These guys feed on insects and fungus which live within the rocks of their volcanic habitat. In order to access this food source the creatures must first pulverize the surface of the rock using their horns, clawed forelegs and teeth ( designed to crush large pieces of rock rather than bite or chew their prey ). The Pyroflatulatori's wide tongues are then used to lick up their meal.
This inefficient method of gathering their food obviously results in a good deal of inorganic matter being ingested. Pyroflatulatori have developed a digestive system to cope with these potentially hazardous substances; the pulverized rock is seperated from the organic material and circulated through a system of stomachs at the hip and shoulder where the creature's regular movements mobilise bone plates at the joints which crush the fragments still further. Finally, having being reduced to little more than dust, the waste is expelled through large exhaust pores along the spine.
One flaw in this otherwise impressive system is the use of flammable digestive gases to propel the waste particles through the pores. The collision of often easily combustible mineral dust in the gas produces spectacular pyrotechnic displays. In addition to providing the creature with it's common name, 'Fire Starter', the burning waste also deposits quantities of hot ash and soot on the upward-facing areas of the Pyroflatulatori's bodies. These deposits build up during adolesence to provide a very effective armour in the creature's adult life.

This unfortunate pair of elongated Rat-Weasels are genetically-engineered test subjects which are bred and trained as part of a military infiltration & sabotage operation codenamed Firestarter. The rat-weasel's are highly fire resitant and tolerant of extreme heat. In early infancy 2 rat's are paired up with their tails tied together, for the next six-months the rats are trained to seek out enemy fuel & ammo trucks, food supplies, munitions stores, and so on. After training the rat-weasels will be used in covert sabotage operations, where a small flaming device is attached to the rats entwined tails, then the rats are dumped off too seek the nearest target for destruction. They are also adept at creating chaos in enemy ranks and frightening enemy guard dogs. However the survival rate for their missions is quite low, thus veteran kamikaze rat-weasels are in short supply, and the rat-weasel trainers do have a tendency to cry more often than most military personnel.

    concept:

Life in the pleistocene epoch was hard both for the human and, for the Southern Gonwanaland Flame Bird. The human was a veritable imbecile and the Flamebird couldnt fly. But it was conciderably easier for the human for, in the depths of the Gonwanaland winter, they learnt that the answer to all thier heating needs came in a small, easily hunted and relatively defenseless package. Flamebird farmers or Flameherders rounded up great numbers of the small bird and coralled them in the first example of animal husbandry known to man. The usefulness of the flamebird cannot be overstated. What other animal can cook itself? After a hard night on the fermented dog urine over at the Ughhs cave you could stumble home crack a few flamebirds and have a meal and a fire within seconds! The very first fast food, the flame bird was of course hunted into extinction.
FACT. The flamebird survived in areas of volcanic activity as it sustained itself only on an algea that grew on bubbling volcanic mud pits. Its beak developed fleshy liplike growths so it could sip on the piping hot brew.
FACT. Another usefull aspect to the flamebird was, although it could not fly, it habitually flapped its wings in a most amusing manner. This is not only amusing, but, when placed next to a fire, or indeed another cooking flamebird the bird would fan the flames. This makes cooking time all the quicker.
FACT. Its brittle bones release a spark when snapped igniting the flamable stomach gases developed from the mud pit slime. When snapped open the flamebird imediately bursts into flame, so BE CAREFUL if you ever find a flamebird fossil. Gasses do dissipitate over time but you cant be too sure.
FACT. In the Book of Genesis (2:19-20) it is mentioned that the first task given by God to Adam was: to name and care for the Garden of Eden and the animals. What God actually said was "Im shagged Ads, I can't be stuffed creating anything for dinner. How about you pop down and get a couple of Flamers?" To which Adam replied "Yey Flamers!"

Although it appears defenseless on the surface, its peculiar head works like a battery, producing an electrochemical discharge that delivers terrible shocks to any would-be predators. They can even "sneeze" electricity at those who venture too close.
Although they live in the coldest areas on the planet, oxroys are being labeled as "firestarters". More and more frequently, zoos and collectors of exotic animals remove oxroys from their native habitat, and the creatures inadvertently spark blazes with their superheated nasal discharges.

    Fernus Peranus
The Fernus Peranus is one of a few species in the Pyro-Furnace family. These creatures stand at approx 6 ft at shoulder height are typically non aggressive but when provoked or put into a life threatening situation they will use a very effective defense mechanism. This mechanism is only used when absolutely necessary because the Fernus Peranus will sparingly store a certain amount of liquids which take days for its body to produce. It has a very complex infrastructure almost like a chemical lab, where the organs are specifically designed to transfer and sift liquids and gases. The highly flammable concentration of Ethyl Chloride, Isopropyl Chloride, and 1-1 Dichloroethylene are kept separate each hooked up to 3 tubes leading to the 3 facial protrusions where they are released. The Fernus Peranus will release one or all three of these liquids at once and will then blast the mixture with oxygen and surprisingly has great control over the combustion.
The sacs on its back store a 4th substance one much more potent and used in rare cases. This substance will explode on impact into a fiery ball of extreme heat. Though the fire is very harmful to most creatures the Pyro-Furnace family is invulnerable having similar traits of rocky exoskeletons. In the case of the Fernus Peranus, this creatures exoskeleton is made up primarily of a substance known as flint. Flint is a sedimentary rock and consists predominantly of silica, with occasional impurities such as calcite, iron oxides, clay minerals, and the organic remains of marine organisms also made of silica. A characteristic of flint is its natural conchoidal fracture.

    artist: GatorKyle
    concept:

The Pyronix phoenecious is a bipedal predator that is the terror of the plains. Due to its tough, armored food source, it has developed a furnace for a digestive system, and the excess heat is vented out special orifices along the dorsal surface of its neck. These animals are by necessity a diurnal species, for they give off light and are therefor unable to ambush prey at night. They have a kornified sexual apendage which is an outgrowth of the sternum. This structure can alternately be used to impale larger prey. The Pyronix is a top-chain predator/scavenger, and it often starts fires during the dry season. These fires serve to hold back overgrowth of plant matter, and renew the cycle of life in its environment.

    concept:
    Flintfingers
This towering behemoth has a voracious apetite, and scoops up cattle and livestock with its fleshy scoop of a tail. As the carcases are digested, the fumes from the decomposing flesh fill up the two glands on the flintfinger's belly (the ones that look like a sack). When the sacks are full, the napalmy substance pours from the creatures mouth. When he becomes agitated, he whips around his two fingerlike tentacles which have on the end, two flint like fingernails. Im sure you know the rest.

    artist: Stephan R
    concept:

The Kicte' Fire Lizard is at home in dense jungles and rainforests. It feeds on a very toxic berry that builds up a chemical reaction in the stomach of the beast. When a predator is near it can ignite small portions of liquid fire from the pores on its back to burn the mouths or attacking limbs of its enemies. When these animals go into a defensive mode they can sometimes burn down the trees or surroundings that they hide in.

    concept:

the rock dwelling firestarter produces an organic flammable fluid, not unlike tar, in a sack under its jaw.. He can project it from his mouth onto its prey. He has growths on the side of its claw that he can rub together to produce sparks, which ignite the quickly-burning fluid, which will burn like a wick and ignite his prey.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    artist: Lewis
    concept:

The Firestarter is a far descendant from the family of rats. It feeds itself all day long with the freshest and youngest leafs, twigs and tubers.
One problem remains for the Firestarter tho. Because just like every rat his teeth keep growing. Thus he smoothens his teeth against rocks. However his teeth arent regular teeth, theyre made from flint. So when smoothenening his teeth against rocks it has caused many forestfires.
Many scientists believe the firestarters have flint-teeth for a natural purpose. The fires keep the forest young and alive. From the ashes young trees and twigs arise, the Firestarter's main foodsource.

    concept:
    The Crematian
Evolution brought on by time, genetic tampering, and radiation have altered the surface of the Earth in a catastophic way. Creatures only imaginable in nightmares now share the world with what's left of man; one being the Crematian. Evolved from a species of crab, this crustacean no longer lurks in the shallows of reefs and the rocks of beaches, but on the lands that were once North America.
The Crematian was given its name for its ability to project a flammable saliva onto its prey or to start fires to funnel prey into traps. The Crematian then consumes the charred corpses, as it requires a high carbon diet. It projects its flammable saliva, at great distances, with two large air sacs located on the back of it's head.
Crematian stool is highly saught after as they are rich source of diamonds, the worlds only existing currency.

That damn Mike Corriero and his intolerably high talent! I saw no choice but to vote for him and his despiccably cool creature. Which is not to say none of the other candidates didn't do a great job, far from it. Everyone with an entry here can be proud of their work. (Some more, some less, but i think you can all rate your stuff the best, right?)

I voted for MIKECORRIERO, not only because of excellent rendering and anatomical design but also solid conceptual creativity. Not only did he make his design believable, but coming from a biological view his concept was sound and interesting as well.

Of course there are a whole heap of excellent images and concepts here. I almost voted for Matt Dixon, but I liked Mike's concept better.

    Kudos to all who entered!

Voted for Mike Corrierro's over Matt Dixon's, though it was an extremely tough choice. Had to go with Mike's due to the just absurd detail level and that pretty flame. How the hell did he do that?

Too many insanely rendered entries! pld:
Simonl, rushtoy, shadoman, Dixon, digitalfly, soulweaver, Mike C, Stephan R, rWDrk, Murray, and romance you made this round so bloody hellish to vote on.
Ultimately though...i had to go with Dixon. Just every sinister touch was spot on.

Hideyoshi and Muttonhead Thanks guys for the call out in post thread. I appreciate the mention.

Went with Matt Dixon's, I like his rendering style and his creature has so much personality. But I also love MikeCorriero's, Rawwad's, Shadowman's, Rushtoy's, digitalfly's, stephan r's...and a few more but I am tired of typing already. Good round.

damned work, I never have time to come up with finished works any more. Oh well. I have a vacation cming up in about a week and a half so I'll be able to turn something in again.

Mot excellent turnout I must say, both in rendering as well as some very very nifty concepting.

Vahn: Very sketchy but it clearly get's it's point across. I'm digging it.

Matt Dixon: sweet color scheme and I like the little details such as one of the spore's combusting.

digitalfly: those little graphic drawings next to your creaure are great, both in humor as well as style. They really bring the concept to a new level.

Soulweaver: very imagenative, I hate to see the little bugger sneeze under water.

MIKECORRIERO: beautifull, it looks so alien and the colors are excellent as usual.

Main Loop: another favorite of mine and the upper drawings really add to the concept. The scorch marks on the bird look so real!

Muttonhead: slick rendering, the eyes really pop out!

JakkaS, where is your entry? it was shaping up so very nicely.

Haha Voted for Rwdrk's entry. I always like the way humor is putted in to the concept, while the creature still looks serious and dangerous Cool rendering again. The feathers lookn sweet!

Rawwad, shadoman, Matt Dixon, digitalfly, soulweaver, Mitze, Mike C, Stephan R, Murray and romance entrys.

wow, lol. i didnt even get a mention! but it was my first ever creature, next two weeks im gonna work hard and shock you guys!!! my vote goes to Matt, i think i like purple, and for the simple fact that...i heard that blue fire comes from when you burn ink. (dunno where i heard that), and if it was a biological fire, i could guess it would come from igniting an inky substance.

    Firestarter!

Holy crap ~ so many good entries why can i only pick one???!!!

Anyway ~ joining the bandwagon and voted for MikeC. I know i'm stating the obvious, but it is just a beautiful piece, great idea, presentation, design, texturing, and everything else ~ I really like the way you rendered the flames ~ it is very interesting and full of energy, when I saw this piece I just stared at it for like twenty minutes, and cried.

Here are the my other favorites ~

Matt Dixon - another grade A piece! Cool design that's full of personality. hot hot hot!

Shadoman - liked this one alot, nice work with the lighting, colors and making the creature look 3dimensional.

BaronVonWink - cool design and well presented too

muttonhead - like the style alot and the lineart - plus the ideaof this guy used as a torch by some huge deamon is hilarious!

    Cognition.sb
    - i think your idea is very original and can easily imagine seeing this moth flyin around and catching himself on fire, nicely painted too!

Simonl - Really like the way you painted this, the coloring is very nice and its just a cool design, imagining this guy squirming around launching gobs of fire is great hahaha!

Complete2, fuuryoku, Romance, GatorKyle, Rushtoy, Greentopaz, rWDrk - all really nice pieces that made it painful to choose a winner

~ I agree with you marco, gonna work really hard on the next entry to make up for this one, and since nobody mentioned yours, here's what i think -

you had a strong start with the nice lineart - creature is very solid/3d and has alot of motion and life to him ~ great job - what i dont like as much is the gradient background, not that i'm pointing a finger, look at my background ha! - also the fire effects look kinda flat, like they are on a seperate layer floating above the creature, the coloring is a good start, but maybe you could work on pushing the lighting/value to make him pop more and bring more attention to the head and upper body, sort of establish a strong focal point ~ anyway that is just my opinion and i'm no expert, hope i didn't sound demeaning cuz I do like your piece, it's just that there is like 35 good pieces in this thread so some people aren't gonna get the recognition they deserve.

also too bad Jakkas withdrew his entry cuz it was quite good, as with all the work of his that i've seen.

Visually Matt Dixon is my favorite, and there were so many other great illustrations SO... i judged my vote on a more all around concept of a creature that interests me.

rushtoy got my vote, I like the unique approach you took and the lighting is very calming to look at and imagine these creatures burning like hot air balloons through the sky. I'd love to see this as a creature in Half Life 3 or something
