Hey, Chewster, you're back! Where's your sketchbook updates?
Sorry for my absence, SSG. Haven't done much artistic lately. Rather uninspired. However, I've just started a very cool school project, so hopefully that'll get me back into the swing of things.
First, some croquis from that same session as before, and some heartless "studies".
Alright, now the school project I was talking about:
I'm making a book. The idea is to illustrate Tool's song "Right In Two". (Lyrics can be found here)
And here's m sketches so far. Trying to develop and figure out how I want the angels to look.
I like the still-life drawings! Especially the 2nd one. I'm having a problem with the composition on the first. The objects are too close together. It wouldn't read too well as a silhouette. You might want to make your shadows much more darker. You'll want some contrast. There's not enough in there. Good job overall.
Loads of stuff, should have posted earlier. Exams messed me up, sorry.
Liking the concept in #269 even though you said you were uninspired. Face paint is always cool. Interesting pose too. Watch it that you don't cover up the body with clothing and armor and such, before the actual anatomy is there.
Nice studies in #271; keep it up. Those last two sketches have some nice details and good rendering, keep that consistent.
The project seems fun. Afraid I'm not familiar with the topic though ;[. Nice to see you trying out all those different eyes. Liking the stylized clouds too. Saw very similar looking clouds not too long ago, not sure who did those though. And thats one nice fashion design in #272. Looking forward to the finished project. What's it going to be? an animation/illustration/comic?
Keep at it, hoping to see more from you soon!
Yeah, that's kinda what happens when I'm uninspired, the anatomy goes to shite. Thanks.Originally Posted by Anthis
Yeah, I know I've seen clouds like that before too, but I can't for the life of me remember where.Originally Posted by Anthis

As for the topic, I thought I should say a few words so that people don't get the wrong impression, since the text I'm illustrating can be viewed as religious/anti-religious (depending on which version you read): I'm not a religious guy. I'm generally against organized religion. You could say I'm not so much a believer as a hoper, but I refuse to live my life to please someone/something I don't have proof exists. I am, however, a big fan of fantasy and fantasy stories. Which is what I'm treating Tool's lyrics as. The bible (and the whole christian religion) contain a lot of great, interesting stories. In short, my product shouldn't be viewed as anything religious, just a comment on human history/culture/society through a fantasy story.
Now, some pictures: (These are actually smaller in real life. I just scanned them in bigger for your convenience.)
Some progress shots of my final product. This will probably be my last update before I'm finished, since I'm gonna have to pull an all-nighter to get it done by tomorrow
"Angels on the sideline
Puzzled and amused"
"Why did father give these humans free will
Now they're all confused"
"Don't these talking monkeys know that Eden has enough to go around"
"Plenty in this holy garden, silly monkeys"
"Where there's one your bound to divide it"
I'm liking what I see here. Keep rocking Hai!
And yeah, I've been delayed by my own lazy arse and circumstance. However the fires of motivation burn within me now, or something to that effect, and if I actually -post- something, maybe it'll even get off the ground. I'll try and have a weekly upload at the very least from now on. Gonna delve into the anatomy dungeon and slay drawing skill beasts for juicy experience points.
Thanks Chewster. And link to your sketchbook in your sig as well, darnit. Waiting for those updates.
I lost about 2 horus of photoshop work the other day. It was a quick, referenced nude study. I was just gonna do the face before uploading, and then my computer froze. Silly as I am, I hadn't made one save. Burn.
Well, here's a real quick (head's too big and the torso should've been constructed better, nevermind the rendering ) character concept for a game. Just something to keep this sketchbook afloat. I should be uploading more character concepts in the near future.
I kind of rediscovered my love of drawing today. I haven't been drawing much lately (almost not at all actually), mainly because I've been so uninspired and whenever I tried to draw something it turned out so much worse than I could remember my earlier drawings did. Anyway, got some time to just sit and draw and listen to music today, and it was great. So here are two of the sketches I did.
And here are some concepts for that game I was talking about. This will also double as a school project. We have 9 weeks to do something of our choosing (had to be approved by the teachers first of course). I chose concept art as my theme, and my task is to present 3 finished character concept illustrations. These are my initial sketches on the first character. She's a APC (Armored Personnel Carrier) Pilot in a futuristic setting. Her weird legs are boots she needs to operate her APC.
You're getting somewhere Hai. Good to see you rocking on. Been absent, had to cope for a while since my girlfriend cheated on me. Trying to work up enthusiasm for drawing more.
Hey Anders.. bit of a late reply... Been away for a while ;|
Hope the project was successful, some of the finished shots in #277 are looking pretty refined. I'd say all those studies and sketches payed off. I'd say the scale is off in the 2nd panel though.
Liking the character concept in #279, but I think it's just like you said; you loose track of the anatomy when you focus on the concept.
#280 and 281; these are better, anatomy wise. I'd say they are looser and more interesting as a concept also. Glad you're inspired again. The kind of vest in the first picture of #280 seems to be recurring in your drawings. I like it though, stylish.
Like the APC driver, concept matches the topic. I think you could push it a little further, like actually making those legs look functional. They seem a bit rigid.
#281; Damn nice man. You seem to be having trouble with feet though. Like the clothing with the classic element in it. Nice and clean drawing too. I like the weapon as a whole, but I think it could use some detail.
But I can see you're already working on weapon designs in #283 ;] Last character looks nice but a bit asymmetrical.
Nice to see the dynamic figures in #284. Keep that up, you can handle it and it will make your characters look better.
Perhaps you should try some value studies and such. Seems like you were working on that in the 2nd pic of #283. The shading sometimes looks a little messy. Seems you're already working on that in those latest posts. Would love to see some more fleshed out characters, rather than 'outlines'. I'd say your torsos are fine, but perhaps you should look into pelvises.
Some of these latest drawings are pretty good. Looking forward to seeing more from you. Keep it up!
Yay, crits make me happy. Thanks for all of that Anthis! I'll look into the legs of the APC pilot. As for pelvises, I should definitely do some studies. I really feel that that is the part of the human body I'm having the most difficulty with at this point
humanNature: Absolutely. Sorry if I didn't specify credit enough. I'm not going to publish the book or anything, though.
Here's a little thing I started today. GOnna work more on it, but now it's movie-time
edit: Gah, needs longer upper arm, no? Why do I always spot these things after I upload them?
Oh, and this is from reference (obviously).

So, I just got my Copic Sketch markers that I ordered from the states. Here's my very first drawing using these markers to colour. As you'll probably notice, this was more of a test of different techniques and whatnot than a serious drawing. I love the markers and how they handle, but I've realized I made a huge mistake when choosing my colours. Turns out all my grays are way too dark. I'll see if I can find some lighter grays here in Norway (moving to the capital this summer, yay), 'cause I don't really want to order from the US again due to the shipping costs. Oh well. I'll keep experimenting with these in the meantime, I've already learnt a lot of stuff from this one.
Nice to see you still going strong Hai! I'm getting back there, thanks for the support. I'd love to see that digital ref lady finished, you're on the right track there. Also, nice washes. I like the brown tones in particular, reminds me of a certain swedish artist doing work for the Mutant PNP rgp games. Look em' up, beautiful illustrations.
Hai, it's aweseom to see you have been keeping at it man. My suggestion is to go lighter on the lines that you usually like to draw with so that when you got something that you think you are happy with you can do stronger, longer and more confident lines that look more like this here. i love that one.
Also, using markers you have to go from light to dark (as you have probably discovered by now) and the type of paper that you use makes a huuuuuge difference in the outcome of the colours.
Keep it up man!
PJ, dude, so glad to have you back here, man. I get what you're saying about the lines.
No shit! Also, using markers you have to go from light to dark (as you have probably discovered by now) and the type of paper that you use makes a huuuuuge difference in the outcome of the colours.
Not much drawing going on lately, which is a shame. But I've been busy with other stuff, like work. Anyway, here's and update I'm kinda happy about. I'm pretty pleased with the stylization of this one, although the knee might have gotten a little small. Sorry about the quality... really wish I had an A3 sized scanner.
Edit: Also, thanks to Daryl Mandryk and Alien1452, without whom this drawing would never had been concieved.
Now THAT is some real improvement! Do the drawing justice Anders and add a piece of paper at the bottom and finish the drawing. Your composition skills will come but for now some drawings deserved to be finished and this one is one of them!
I think my three star rating is turning most potential viewers away... Think I should abandon this sketchbook and start a new one to escape the stars?
Yeah, I know what you mean. Only problem is it was done on a special type of paper for acrylics. Not too sure about mixing paper types... Either way, I can't get to the drawing right now. Moved to the capital to start my game design bachelor Anyway, I do get your point. Maybe I'll do something about it some time when I'm home.Originally Posted by comixnut
Finally managed to do some sketches, it's been far too long. Also picked up some lighter grey markers here in Oslo, yay.
