A portrait I just did. Took me an hour.

I'm having a really hard time controlling values with my charcoal pencils. I guess I bought the wrong ones again. Anyone know of any good ones, and the paper? I was thinking soft/smooth paper is better for getting th values and all right without smudging.

I've always been partial to Generals charcoal pencils. I love to use good willow and vine charcoal sticks.

Play around with the myraid of papers out there. Look for something in the 60/70 lb range. Experiment with different 'tooths' to see what works best for you. I like some relativly cheap Strathmore for all purpose sketching.

Hard to bring myself to try to ruin an $8 sheet of good bristol ^_^

try a workable fix between layers of value to cut back on smudge. Beware some fixes may alter the tooth of the paper somewhat. Hairspray works in a pinch if your out in the field sketching.

Yeah i like ur stuff, the last ones got some nice warm colors. I like ur style of painting, the way u did the beard also. Maybe it's a bit massive though, just thit little detail that makes it realy hair or something? I don't know.
I'd never realy painted so guess it's more dificult than people think hehe.

Keep it up, some nice portraits and concepts in here

Cup of Joe> thanks man . I looked thorugh your sb, and it shows much improvement. keep it up!

JeroArt> yeah. the beard. i think that's what threw the perspective off. perhaps instea of giving him a goatee beard, i should have given him the 'gandalf' beard. thanks !

    shylone> thank you .

Wasn't home all day yesterday or night. Got home this morning. DId this as soon as i got home. around a 30 minute painting. I need to get a new oil painting set; i'm all out of colors

haven't posted because i sent my portfolio out to Art Center, and took a few days break. i drew, but i threw it all out since last monday.
i'm getting a bit more comfortable with painter... learning to compromise

a little concept. i wasn't exactly going for how the image looked; this was more for getting myself a bit more acquainted with the program.

    Thanks Haldor.

Some sketches from last night and today. I suck so bad at this. I think I should stop using the white charcoal pencil and use the markers to learn the values the right way, instea of cheating

Charlie> thanks. I think its just that the ones that were on white paper were careless, in a sense. i didn't pay attention to what i was doing. now, i try to pay 100% attention to every line that i put down. i appreciate it the compliment, thanks

lysander> thanks . you're on sijun too, right?

some stuff from today. colored an older sketch (the dome drawing in the street), and did a new marker sketch, then painted over it.

    some stuff from last night.
wasn't too fussy about getting the sketch good. just wanted the general feel of the shapes before i painted over.

hey, a famliliar face from sijun!
good stuff here! nice progress as well!
you´re awesome with color and lighting.
if i were you i would try to focus more on the drawing part. getting proportions and perspective and that kind of stuff in the same level as the colors and light.
    keep up the fine work!
