hey, youre roughly the same age as me! Nice.
Ive noticed that you do the hatching in very short strokes.
Using longer strokes will allow you to finish it quicker, and will look better.

blanqish-Thanks, I still got a load of issues with my shading.

    tensai- thanks
SGS- Thanks for the crits, I really try not to stick to any style, but just ends up coming out like that anyway. I agree that its not helping with my shortcomings and that I avoid issues too much. The point in the portrait was to just study the face, but I still rushed it a bit on the body and hair I suppose. I'll try and work on all the stuff you mentioned.
chaos- A habit im trying to break, just been doing it wrong too long. Thanks.
    evil- Thanks, will do chief.
Whew, a buncha stuff to reply to, had to rush the update a bit. Lately I haven't been doing studies much, especially not ones that I was actually satisfied with. Here are just a couple crappers from my school sketchbook, with studies coming in shortly.

I actually really like your style of crosshatching. I'd say stick with it. (Unless, of course you want to broaden your styles.) But, I think it really works for what you're drawing. In that eyeball head guy sketch, you've really got your values down well. I'm liking the bold outlines too.

I would start making the jump away from pencils now. I regret not getting into other media when I was your age. (Of course, I didn't know what a compy was until I was 19) But you should try digitally painting one of these, or even try traditional paints. I think you've nearly mastered pencils, and you're showing some great skill in the wolf and rider painting. Take that to the next level. DO EET!!!!

    Gonk! Where's my 3k?!

Light, that's great! I wish there were more color contrast specifically between the hair and skin though. Man, why didn't anyone tell me you had a sketchbook? Bastards.
