The Last Annual Ca Vector-Only Competition IS NOW ON!

THE LAST ANNUAL CA VECTOR-ONLY COMPETITION--2006

    And it's on!

THIS IS VECTOR-ONLY! How you interpret the topic is up to you. Whatever treatment/style you use is up to you. Anything goes...as long as it's VECTOR ONLY. It was getting to be a close race, but the topic is...

    DANGEROUS FOOD

    Starting Time: 9:00 a.m. EST, Saturday, April 29, 2006.

    Deadline: 11:59 p.m. EST, Sunday, May 7,2006.

    Ground rules:

You can scan a guide sketch in, but it can't be a part of the final art in any way. It must be deleted before you post.

All art, including any linework, coloring, shading, etc., must be VECTOR ONLY. You can't use any part of your app that executes as a rasterized image. No brushes, no rasterizing filters, no nothin' that you're used to in Photoshop and Painter. This includes the brush tool in Illustrator. Pen only.

You can use any filters as long as they don't rasterize the image to work properly. This rules out most, if not all, photoshop filters. Basically, pretend you're working in Illustrator 4.x or so, or its equivalent.

Coloring can include standard fills, the blend and gradient tools, and any opacity and deformation tools controls you might have access to, AS LONG AS THEY DON'T CHANGE THE ART TO A RASTER IMAGE to execute properly.

Once your art is ready to post, make and save a copy set to "stroke only" at maybe 1 or .5 point black to prove the vector. Or just go to whatever view you have that shows the path structure only and save it as a screen capture.

Once your art is done, convert it to a jpeg for posting. Color sometimes muddies a bit in the conversion, so MINIMAL correction is allowed at this point, but don't add any additional detail or art effects.

WHEN YOU'RE FINISHED: Post your final piece and the "path" drawing proof in this thread. I'll open up the final poll Sunday night after I nicely ask one of the Mods/Admins to insert the image URLs into my post. Fozzy, can you be any help here? Or is there another way to get it done...maybe by emailing me the image URLs?

TRASH TALK and the random killing of small fuzzy things is mandatory--especially cute wuvable bunny things! Collateral damage is to be expected... Any talk of possible "Modernist" influences will result in carpet bombing...

If I missed anything above, let me know...

I'm still reeling from the Girl's TD, plus I need to get this calendar business started up. As much as I'd love to learn from the plentiful mistakes of my previous TD, I'll have to pass on this one.

...why is this the LAST annual vector TD?! No fair!

Hey, I wanna join. I got the painting challenge going on too, but I think I'm gonna find time for some vector between layers drying. My vote goes to "God of things that roll".

If I can recover from the girly t-dome, I'll join in.

But, I warn you: My vector style is on the entirely different side of the spectrum from my traditional/painting side:

I'm taking you guys down! 8)
Got to warn you, with the amount of time i've spent doing animations in vector i've gotten pretty darn good at it. Although i like the idea of taking down one of you Illustrator users, which will be a challenge considering you got the G-Mesh tool to work with... I unfortunately am stuck with just your run of the mill linear and radial gradients which should make things interesting.

Bring it on people, i am putting my source files on the table aswell, any one of you little pansies care to match me on that?

Anyone using an obscure program like me. I'm using inkscape. It works for all my vector needs.

hey ikaekae! thanks for putting this together! quick turnaround too....sweet!
one question: in AI CS2 (and some legacy) there's the wonderful world of the mesh tool to add depth to simple gradients, etc. will this be ok to use? when shown as a preview, you can appreciate all the lines that make up the gradient mesh. if you're curious as to how this looks in final form, click on my cognition studio sampler in my signature file and look at the first piece on the kidneys - that was done (along with meshing the text) all in AI.
let me know what you think.

    cheers!

Egets, I'm at a loss on the voting problem. Does it require cookies or something like that turned on? I'll check with one of the powers that be...

...and the pen and curve tools in PS qualify...

Red', as far as I know, the mesh is a vector tool, so it can be used. I haven't used it myself yet since I just went to CS2 from 7.x...

Im gonna try and be in on this, only used vector like 3 times before for this kinda stuff (not including random logo-type stuff from graphic arts class) so this should be a fun learning experience and a whole new era of gettin my ass handed to me. At least it'll gimme a chance to play around more with the mesh tool. :B
