hey mikec!
i'm going to go with design and eye candy, but i do enjoy works that are sans environment so as to appreciate those details alone. in addition to these is the concept text that helps pull the story all together. unless a topic specifically states that it should be in an environment, you can count that i'd be much happier trying not to put my creature in an environment so as to spend more time on the design/eye candy. at times i feel compelled to add the environment so as to compete more...at other times i say funk dat crazee noize!
cheers!

The thing is sometimes the surroundings help reinforce the creature's concept. For example the Creature Feeding on Lava round. Of course this creature could have been placed against a white or plain background, but the fact that it suggests a lava surrounding reinforces the concept more, at least to me. Also note that the background is not busy and that it does not have priority over the creature or competes with its importance. I think this kind of background, that "adds" to the already dominant subject is nice. The Symbiotic Predators winner entry also features a surrounding, but the emphasis is placed on the creature. There are more examples like these that I think are also appropiate.
Honestly, I haven't seen yet an entry in which the surroundings compete in importance with the subject. Maybe its just me.
In any case, what would you guys suggest? No backgrounds allowed for some rounds? Maybe we could try some plain background rounds, but I really think surroundings are nice and can add a lot. Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, I understand. Something that is worth noting also is that there are rounds were creatures with no enviornment won over those that did have. Rounds 2, 3, and 4 for example, venemous bird, dont touch that, and anal parasite. I don't remember all of the entries on the polls, but I remember seeing a lot that had surrounding enviornments. But in the end, the creatures that won those rounds didn't have surrounding enviornments.
I've wondered the same thing actually, if illustrations with background are generally more appealing than a concept on a plain background. The answer for me is, it depends. I really, really like "don't touch that" entry in the winner gallery for example. Guess it depends on the pieces in question rather than a general rule... I dunno. Just something to think about.

the point is not about background or not, the point is creature design or not...
Mike you are right with the thing, that people vote for eye candy illustration more than creature design, and i wish it would be the other way round...
Last round we had the extreme case with tyranx' entry, it's obviously a Plesiosaurus artwork with minor changes...i think it's no harm to mention this since he already said it and also many members mentioned it...
I don't know how to avoid this situations, the only way is sticking to the creature design part when you are aware of the problem. So we can try to convince the majority of doing this also and getting closer to the aim if not hitting it right on the head...
But i think it's nothing to generalize...we had entries with great creature designs who won, even if stronger illustrations were part of the round...
I say, stick to what you believe and you will win![]()
hey all,
i'm currently doing some illustrations for a book focusing on evolution and it's tie to atmospheric oxygen. i'm reading the manuscript so that the illustrations make the most amount of sense to the reader.
one thing to consider when you are doing creature concepts is to think about respiration as the most important driver of an animal's body plan. To back up a bit: within the Animal Kingdom there are 35 animal phyla. A phylum has members that share a distinct suite of characters that could be called a "body plan". So, back to the body plan and respiration - the need to move has affected many of the phyla. A key implication of movement is the need for energy, and respiration is a very good design approach to energy production in an organism.
I know...total geek, but to quote the manuscript: "Oxygen is essential for animal life and that animal life has evolved a host of structures for oxygen acquisition."
Food for thought.

since I was "informed" not to waste space inthe actual working topic thread.. Im continuing to ask these questions over here.
I was told specifically that I should take my creature drawing and put it in a scene with people and environment. It was my understanding that we were to be designing creatures here. not telling stories. Don't get me wrong I like to tell stories and include creatures and all that. I just didn't think this was the place for it.
I am confused.
(a disconneected note on respiration, part of the joy of inventing life forms is being able to modify circumvent and create processes beyond those which normally exist. perhaps energy intake and expiration are even more crucial than the path of oxygen.... but thats probably not in the manuscript..... topic suggestion "Helium based lifeform" or some such).....chaos=total geek , with a degree in bio
and Fozzy...Mr Bar.....sir.....could you, in you most benevolent and wonderfiully efficient way, please move the 3CH threads again....Im lazy and Im tired of having to chase them down
thank you profusely
