A class sketch assignment. We were supposed to do a book illustration, so I chose my almost all-time favorite book, The Sun Also Rises, by Ernest Hemingway. I kept trying to build it up and it didn't feel right, so I decided to stick with a sketchy minimalist approach. (Ala the webcomic A Lesson Is Learned but the Damage Is Irreversible, perhaps?) Also I am trying to improve my digital painting in color. I just wanted to get some C&C, as I've been looking at it for too long to be objective. And anyway I need to post more stuff around here
Never read the book so I can't tell you how well the image corresponds to it.
I believe the lady's eyes are too far apart and her mouth is a little bit off center. Also, I think you can cut away a bit of the right side from the image.
The head is tilting without much reaction from the neck. I usually recommend trying out a position before subjecting a drawn person to it. I'd also use references for both of them. In addition to Jeri's comment, the guy's ear is semi-ridiculously small.
I'd also continue with the head to the right (maybe just adding some back light), because right now, it looks like a poorly placed vignette.
