Lightbulb New Aspiring Artist Please Help

Hey everyone! I'm brand new to Art and this website. I was looking to find out where I should start. I bought a bunch of "How-To" art books. Do they really help at all? I'm going to start school through AIO in april. I'm shooting for my bachelors in Game Art and Design. Any help on where I should start out would be awesome. I love enviro art and creating characters. What should I do? Thanks in Advance.

Ok, I'll do that but as someone starting out in Game Art and Design should I start creating characters or should I do Enviro's or Concept Art?

Honestly, I can't say at the moment. I'm still very new to Art. Any pointers would be great.

Just post your favorite stuff you've done, and we'll be able to tell you.

I'm having similar problems to you (I'm also pretty new)- the crazy confusion of "what should I do?!" Hehe. Nuts to try, like anything else, and well worth doing.

Does anyone know what kind of set up I should buy for drawing? Like does anyone have any links or know of good stores in maryland (east coast). Should I buy a desk/easil... what kind of tools should I buy etc... Or what size pencils/pens for someone who wants to create cool characters to move into the gaming industry.

The tools are a secondary worry in the very beginning, the primary is to get enough practice done. Of course good tools make drawing more pleasant, but the need to draw as much as possible overruns the need for "proper equipment". Just some pencils and paper will be a good start. Nothing fancy is needed, too much stuff (especially if it's damn fine) will only distract.
