    Storyline:

    The year 2446 CE

Mankind and its technology have advanced at an exponential rate, however trivial political, religious and social demands have caused the splintering of former superpowers into smaller nation states, pitting themselves against each in a number of minor conflicts.

Since 2395 a minimum of 27 conflicts, hostile incursions and border disputes have been raging in various confined areas across the planets surface, sparking a new global economy.
Covenants of major corporations have banded together in various factions and are now the true international players, feeding the ever increasing demand of new weapons technology.
The change in style of warfare has rendered weapons of mass destruction virtually useless increasing an appetite for more unconventional weapon systems, specifically the VidaNova Corporations newest developments in the field of creating new species of animals bred for specific purposes.

The idea behind this new move is too harness the animals natural intelligence, sensory abilities, and ability to traverse difficult terrain. They are currently working on models for civilian implementation, ranging from beasts of burden for remote areas to leisure models as pets. However there have been worrying reports of certain products escaping from captivity, and having unexpected effects on the flora and fauna they interact with, conspiracy theorists place blame on a huge range of subjects, ranging from the Cytarabinoside used in manipulating metabolic pathways in the animals, to mother earth resting control back from humanity to satan himself.
Some minor political and religious groups are already rallying, trying to bring this series of unnerving events to the public eye, wild rumors and conspiracy theories are already calling this the 8th day of creation.

    Topic for COW:
    Giant Suicide Digger

A creature made by scientists by mixing genes of existing and extinct animals...there are also some mechanical/technical parts implemented in the predators organism. The predator must be able to be mounted and is carnivore, making him a living and very aggressive killer machine. We need to see something like a saddle, where the hunters can sit on, but you don't need to draw the hunter himself. The creatures full body must be seen.

These creatures are about the size of a cow. They are a genetic cross between beetles and moles, along with unique DNA sequences acting as a genetic bridge for the different DNA strands that constitute the creature's "blueprint". Which also gives them particular fenotipic characteristics, most notably, a very other-wordly appearence. The Giant Suicide Diggers are covered with tough chitin, and they use their frontal appendages for digging.

Creature has the digging abilities of a mole, the seeking abilities of a truffle hunting porker, the tenacity of a badger, and about a ton of high grade 23/34rd century explosives. And it's probably friendly too, til it goes 'boom. The breeders/scientists weren't particularly concerned with keeping it neat and tidy looking, the raw cybernetics are crude and visible. Nothing the creature's overly concerned about since it's probably juiced up on a cocktail of steroids and drugs.

PROJECT GOALS: BIOENGINEERICAL UPGRADED CREATURE FOR SUICIDE MISSIONS
SHORT SUMMARY: Our project is successfully finished. We have used a critter called by natives "Kayakas". This blind creature, that can sense electricity, lives under the planet surface. It uses this ability mainly to track down others of its kind. We have discovered that GSD [Giant Suicide Digger] can sense strong source of electric field from over 50 kilometers...
    UPGRADES:
"Kayakas" AKA "Digit" have very interesting way of procreation. Speciman of this kind looks for strong electricity fields that's generated by "Kayakas'" females ready to procreation. Rest of living organism generates much smaller electric fields, that also can be sensed. When a male and female meet each other, they release genetic materials from their excrescences on their back. We have genetically changed this material to make it explosive, so when the substance is in contact with oxygen, it blows up! We are able to control the power of explosion and also have control what targets we want to destroy.
    ADDITIONAL NOTE:
Our power stations, bunkers and static field generators have "Anti-Digit" systems. When our security system tracks down presence of GSD it can automatically change the electric field power ratio or even turn it off. In 99% cases this stops the GSD.
    VIDANOVA POLICE NOTE:
We suspect that this creature was used to attempt on one of the VidaNova leaders.

Giant Suicide Digger aka. Armant 2.0
VidaNova Corporations has spawned a new breed of atomic bomb, one that lives and breathes and reproduces. The Giant Suicide Digger has been over 150 years in the making since the dawn of the new era when chaos was awoken in the form of Gene Splicing. Man kind had reached a new technological hurdle which it overcame with great pride but disastrous affects. In the year 2275 sector 40.44 of the Colorado Rocky’s breeched it’s overload in the secondary power source resulting in a cataclysmic explosion which left the rocky mountains in dismay. The terrain became impossibly difficult leaving a labyrinth of jagged razor sharp rocks in the aftermath of the incident. VidaNova had begun experimentation on underground genetics of species such as gofer, earthworms, ants and armadillos. Through these experiments giants of the underground were born and reproduced to be used in times of warfare. The dawn of a new era of weaponry had begun, once the Suicide Digger was conceived.
Here you can see a Suicide Digger in hibernation mode docked at Bay VidaBista 45. These giants are dormant until needed, each containing a surgical implant in it’s brain that will hone in on specific locations through means of magnetic fields. Once it’s destination is secured this giant living time bomb begins its underground journey and it will end with the destruction of whatever lay in its path. Suicide Diggers were created primarily with the genes of Bulldog Ants and Armadillo’s giving the creature a profound amount of natural protection with it’s thick plated body and massive claws and pinchers. The thick shell at birth is injected with a form of liquid explosive which grows as the animal ages and increases in size. A small detonator is installed and without even knowing it’s purpose the creature harbors an atomic bomb in its back.

In a world or war scientists have genetically engineered a new hybrid species designed specifically to annihilate enemy military bases without detection. The rapid tunneling and burrowing capabilities of mammals, engineered with sensory abilities ensure quick, undetected beaches inside enemy lines. However, this alone was not sufficient enough to destroy the entire base. Scientist combined beetle genes to the species which caused the mammal to grow a hard layer on its back which would provide protection from incoming bullets. In the growing months of the GSD explosives among with other remote devices were attached to its back where its hard shell would grow over it. Now an armored, burrower with sensory abilities, armed with explosives is at their disposable. Destruction lies ahead.

    Porcus unicornis
    Length: 2,5 meters
    Shoulder height: 2 meters
    Weight: several tons
The Porcus unicornis, also known as the “Cavecracker”, has a nose in the shape of a pickaxe. With this nose, which structure is comparable with his bone structure, he digs till deep under the ground. If he walks into really hard stone structures in the deepest of the world he likes to use his 70 cm’s long horn on the forehead to smash it apart. This horn is a mixture of the hardest and most solid stones and bones the world has ever known.
With special sensors on his head the Cavecracker can detect electro magnetic signals and locate strategic hostile positions. When the signals reach a certain amount of intensivity the explosive parts attached on the Cavecracker’s chest inflame and cause total destruction.

    RAOPS
-A raops is about the size of a pickup truck. Its giant armored head is covered in electromagnetic receptors. This trait allowed its ancestors to detect buried food, but it is now specialized to seek out the signals emitted by military targets. And since a raops is engineered to always feel hungry, it reaches its mark fast.
-A raops' optic nerves are hooked up to the bomb planted on its underside. Though nearly blind, its primitive eyes do detect light and dark, and when it surfaces, the light triggers the explosion of the bomb.
-Powerful stomach acids are disgorged from its mouth to eat through tough barriers.
-This creature produces a lubricating slime to line the tunnels it digs. This slime is also highly combustible. So, even if the raops is destroyed by a decoy mine, all of its tunnels will explode with it, breaking apart the structural integrity of the ground beneath the main target.

    GX Plasma Dozer Worm
The giant plasma dozer worm is a miracle of modern genetic warfare. Measuring in at 55 feet in length and weighing in excess of 10 tons, this behemoth uses its helical arrangement of hind pseudopodia to spin itself through the earth. The drill-like shape of the head and the fiery furnace of a digestive system allow it to bypass all of the toughest obsticles. Ampullae of Lorenzini that have been modified to detect electro-magnetic signals through the earth guide this monster to its target. The GX bombs arrayed underneath the beast's tough clitellum have been connected to these ampullae, and also to our newest encoded GPS system, which makes for precise targeting for the explosion. A computer system with an advanced AI is set to trigger the explosion once the target is reached and all of the safety conditions have been met, ensuring that your newest aquisition does not accidentally blow up your base.
Vida Nova corporation, bringing you the newest and best genetically enhanced weapons, for those times when you just want to kill your enemies with style.

Mass produced by VidaNova, the genetically engineered and mechanically enhanced Gehenapede is roughly 20 feet long and the upper body stands about 8 feet high. Its combination of drilling appendages and hydrolic powered neck allows easy entrance to military facilities. Each body segment carrying a destructive payload can separate from the main body allowing strategic placement in large complexes. The sensitive filiments on it's "eye" stalks trace electromagnetic signals and retract for protection while boring through rock.

    artist: Neorepto
    concept:
The vulcan worm is no more a real worm than a garden weasel is a real weasel. But, nicknames that follow an obvious function tend to stick. The vulcan worm is a reptillian based vertebrate. Its powerful claws dig. Its eyeless, snapper-turtle head chomps and strains earth through bony gills in its lower jaw. Its serpentine length is covered in rigid blade-like fins that extend from the body and curve counterclockwise. The fins' orientation encourage the beast to travel its burrow in a spiralling motion through the earth, speeding up delivery of the bomb it carries implanted in its head. Genetic engineering and cybernetic implants in the beast's brain stem hieghten the vulcan worm's natural equillibrium allowing it to dig its path without disorientation. The beast is also genetically engineered to be extremely sensitive to temperature and pressure. It digs ferociously and singlemindedly when submerged deep in the cold earth but is extraordinarily docile when exposed to room temperature or above. The open air puts it nearly to sleep.
The vulcan worm digs its path and surfaces. Upon exposure to the ambient temperature after reaching its destination, its unmovable mass simply lies exhausted and waits for its fate. A variety of detonation devices work well with this program. Bombs set on a timer, by remote, or in the presence of predetermined environmental conditions or electromagnetic frequencies can all be successfully delivered with the vulcan worm.
The residue left behind after detonation of the vulcan worm bomb resembles first magma, and when cooled, black volcanic rock. On the rare occassions a peripheral victim survives the massive explosion, ground-zero of the vulcan worm's attack is mistaken for a naturally occurring geological event, based on superficial analysis of the evidence left behind.

I voted for MikeCorriero's. I love the atmostpheric lighting, it really makes it believable as a giant creature. Also, the little advertising portion at the bottom looks really professional. I would love to see it in color, but it works so well without it.

Others that I liked for their painterly style are Chuck, mate, Jakkas, machzero, walnut, and perineum. I am practicing some fast painting in photoshop, and would like to get better at it. And Soulweaver has this great sensitive style that I really like, although I doubt I could ever emulate it.

I would probably assume Fozzy didn't deem my work finished enough to be an entry, which is fair. I hadn't actually stated it being final, and I hadn't added a description. Thanks for noticing though Lady Medusa!

I was really glad to see so many people choose black and white for their entries. I think everyone who did used it to great advantage for their entires, pushing the envelope either with grayscale or really great layering of texture undistracted by color. In the end, however, I decided to give my vote to Gator Kyle's Plasma Worm. I thought his entry had the most "genetically engineered for subterrainian purpose" look to it. In a sense, because it looks so odd and simple, it seems almost more believeable. You wouldn't breed an animal for subterrainian travel and ultimately self-destruction "for looks." I think the rendering and presentation is the nicest with the most naturalistic application of texture in the bunch. He didnt go overboard on the technological additions either. And lastly, he used the phrase "ampullae of Lorenzini"... little sensory organs animals like shark have. A friend of mine wishes she had them, I think its a funny sounding phrase, and I was amused somebody used it in their design.

JakkaS got my vote because his design struck me as the most plausible for underground digging...and it was an exceptionally ugly critter. Loved MikeCorrierio's piece, great black and white rendering...maybe it was too pretty for me, was a hard call between these two wonderful pieces; Soulweaver had a gorgeous pencil rendering, but I couldn't picture it as effective a digger as the others; loved Chuck,Mates as well, it's particularly mean looking, but shapewise I had trouble imagining it burrowing-but it could just be me.

Anyways, great job anyone! I know I learned a lot trying to put something together, and also from seeing the other fantastic entries.

some of the creatures were well-rendered, but just had too bulky a body or too many appendages to be effective at digging. while chuck, mate, soulweaver, and jonoy had nice pieces, the bodies just didn't look like they were engineered for digging.

both neorepto and gatorkyle had great digging creatures. the countdown embedded in neorepto's creatures head was a little distracting, and the people just standing there was a bit unbelievable, so i went with gatorkyle's creature.

While definitely being the more ‘alien’ of the entries, I think this design falls through on a number of areas including its practicality as a digger and how ‘terradynamic’ (new word bonus +1) it is. It just doesn’t seem like a creature that could move through the ground well. The coloring is ok, but for instance, the appendages start meshing together a bit and those white speckled things are indistinguishable as anything other than lights. Also, as part beetle and part mole, it looks like neither.

    OtterFrenzy

The weakness of this picture is far and away its lack of clarity. I can tell what you were going for, and the idea of arms on all sides is brilliant, however it seems like such a rush job! The head starts out ok, and than it just falls apart in my opinion. Given another run over and cleaning up, I think based on design merits alone you would be on the top half easily!

    Jonoy

The thing I like most about yours is a balance between its hyper realism and back-story about its ambushing. However, the first part is also imo the weakest aspect of your composition. The beetle is very very well done, however it just looks like a large glowing beetle/cicada and while they are good at digging, I think the normality of the design is what for me at least, nocks it out of the running :/

But seriously man… the rending of the beetle is spot on!

    machzero

This guy is almost too cute to blow up! But oh well, his targets won’t know that! The design is very strong as far as practicality goes (you can’t really beat a mole at it’s own game) so my only real critique is lack of alterations and the practicality of placing the explosives on the outside (I know I know, its for looks) however I wouldn’t want to risk any of those getting gunked up and scraped off! Nice rendering, it has a fairly rough look too it, but is refined enough to see what’s going on!

    JakkaS

And my personal winner is… “digit”. Not only does this picture contains easily the best rendering of any here, but also provides one of the few practical and yet, diverse designs of all. It really looks like it could just ram its head into something until it moves! Fantastic job on all aspects!

    MIKECORRIERO

This composition has two distinct places of focus for me. First and foremost is the design of the critter and for this I commend you. Other than the rather cheesy Godzilla creation story, the animals you mixed and the depiction of them are spot-on! The rendering, while basic does get fairly detailed and does a good job presenting the beast

HOWEVER: and this is just my opinion, the environment is mind-numbingly confusing! I have no idea what is what and what is happening!!! I almost would have ratherd you just render the creature plain… maybe I am missing something obvious, which is more than possible!

    walnut

I really don’t have anything to say that I think is wrong… this guys is just too plain! I mean… maybe I’ve been seeing these things too much and you can’t argue with its practicality, it just seems too normal!... so if this sounds like a downer, realize its only the design aspect I feel is lacking

    pvpham

The rendering is functional, and the design of the animal is great… just not for digging! This guy would be an awesome war horse type of thing, but a furry rhino really couldn’t do much in the ways of tunneling I reckon. So the concept, execution and design are all good… just not for the goal of this creature!

    Lewis

this almost goes hand in hand with pvpham’s design above. You have a great looking creature, however it almost seems like it’s built NOT to dig through the ground. Really no aspect of its design suggests the ability to burrow into the ground other than that though, it would be awesome as just a normal creature.

    Soulweaver

In my opinion this is the best RENDERING of a creature that has been submitted… it wins hands down in that department. In addition to that, it is the most believable and closest to life design of the group; however to me, it lacks both the sense of scale needed as well as any implements of digging. Everybody knows how big a horseshoe crab is, and so unless you placed a person in the picture I get the distinct impression I could punt this lil’ fella as a football! The claws on the back are awesome; I just don’t know how they would help with burrowing!

    GatorKyle

Defiantly in the top 5 designs for the best and most practical of creatures, you really can’t go wrong with a giant burrowing drill bit covered with spines! The rendering of this guy comes in close second with jakka’s as far as simple yet effective color, and like was mentioned, it doesn’t have to be beautiful!

    perineum

This is most certainly a great rough idea, however like OtterFrenzy it just was never cleared up. I also think its composition limited how much of it you could show so its really one dimensional even though you tried so hard to get it to pop out. Im not really sure how those large claws on the front would help it shovel away dirt and rock, however they do look cool and would be cool to see used against tiny little guys running around in terror. I am assuming those green orbs are the bomb/explosives however some clarification would/could help imo!

    Chuck,mate.

Fantastic render… I really can’t add to that. Your colors are amazing, and you offer just enough of an ‘environment’ to get both a sense of scale and yet it still looks like a conceptual picture. However I think it really takes a nosedive in the arena of practicality. The arms play their part well, but the legs would offer no aid in pushing its way deep into the earth. Furthermore, I really have no idea if it goes head first or what, as the design doesn’t really speak its function. I think showing it doing its thing with a cross-section would help this immensely.

    imp_pixel

This design has the good, the bad and the ugly. The ability to detach separate pieces and detonate in mass is simply brilliant! Their destructive nature would be to that of a sink hole, destroying the foundations of a massive area! The amount of technological enhancement while not terrible seems really rushed. Simply placing drills on its arms wouldn’t aid it in digging nor scooping and moving of debris and as far as the ugly, there seems to be far far far too much in the way of exposed electronics and sensitive body parts. I certainly wouldn’t want my electromagnetic sensing earwax to be plowing headlong into rock and dirt! Overall, the coloring seems rather basic and while there are clearly some biological elements, it seems like 80% mechanical and 20% biological to me.

    Neorepto

Simply one of the best back stories EVER! And with a design that boarders on both the fantastic and believable. While in “real life” the spikes probably wouldn’t be as useful as they are meant to be, they look cool! I love the timer on its forehead, even though I am assuming it was just placed for to be funny, and probably wouldn’t actually be seen externally very nice rendering!

    Carnifex

A good staring place, this could really use allot more work. I really don’t get a sense of how it would move; it seems to me rather more suited at laying there and looking sad!

Listen, it's early morning/late night/whichever you prefer according to your timezones, and I voted for imp_pixel. Because:
Each body segment carrying a destructive payload can separate from the main body allowing strategic placement in large complexes.
One of the most creative and intelligent solutions I've ever seen. Pure genious. As for the rendering, this is my first "true concept art" vote (as I understand the meaning of "concept art")- that is, I see it as a concept, something in the process of being concieved, something that can be reworked, rethought about, redesigned. Some of the rest of the design and functionality of the creature may or may not be very practical or intelligent, bur as far as the droppable explosive payloads.. well I've made my point, I'm tired and I have to get some sleep

This round, as usual, has some pretty awesome entries:

    br0ken_spirit - evil!
machzero - funny and a helluva digger I suppose
Jakkas - your style amazes me, again
MIKECORRIERO - darkness! cool looking evil thing there
    lewis - great idea
    Soulweaver - incredible design!
    Chuck, mate - speechless

I went with Mike's. Its nice to see a monotone done well. But I think ost importantly what swayed me was the incorporation of technology. Even deeper in that, due to the nature of the beast, a natural element was used and shown in how the creature would have had to be handled.

Jonoy all the way here. Sweet creature, fantastic colors(and color effects) and it's really dynamic. I also liked how he spun the concept around and made the concept a failed offensive. Time to go evolve again haha!

Legato > Tnx, for the crit. I totally agree with it. Although the reason i went rhino/boar was because i thought everyone would step into the mole kindoff creature. Thus i wanted to be a bit more different, but therefore it lost some credibility yeah...

    Greybelly > tnx

I voted for Chuck_mate. I really got the sense of how big that creature was. And the bomb inside it (in the animated pic) was lovely to see aswell

Ill be in for the next COW

My vote went to Neorepto, I fell for the overal feel and look of the "animal".

It may come as a surprise, but i thought Jakkas' picture was the best from the lot. Both render and concept were right on the ball.

Legato: Right enough a crit, all i can say is when i came up with the idea it seemed like a logical way to go. Next time i'll try something crazier.

legato, thanx for the crits. i'll consider it in my next pic. didn't think much ahead with this pic,it just kinda popped into my head.
props to raops on the superb rendering, but i'm sorry to say i won't vote for anyone, because i don't feel convinced enough by any of the concepts.i kinda feel that many just randomly blend creatures to make for good looks and think about the concept rather afterwards, but that's just my impression.sorry if i offend anyone.

Thanks to Lingmerth for the vote and eyesofruby and legato for the feedback. This was my first COW entry ever and it was nice to get some response. And yeah, the timer and the people pointing at it were funny, simple ways to convey "bomb," as in "timer = bomb," and a sense of scale quickly. As far as narrative, perhaps those two guys are curious as to why such a ferocious thing looks so sleepy. I didnt really want to convey any big story beyond that. Just the creature.

No worries Fozzy... it really wasn't polished enough and I don't expect votes. I should have been clearer in stating my final!

Thanks for taking the time to crit all these Legato, and for the kind words. I was a bit rushed on this, doing it the night before it was due, and it definitely shows. I played around with a few things, but the meshing of the mechanical and biological didn't quite work out like you said. The idea was there were some internal augmentations, but the metal sat outside a little like armor. I should have done it from a different angle and thought it through more. The body segments are intended to be organic, but the lines I put it made it seem mechanical. Initially the drills seemed cool, but when I drew them it did seem, well, funny, but I wanted to finish the thought. The forearms are intended to scoop the debris. Besides these problems, and the others you mentioned, my rendering ability wasn't up to what I wanted to achieve...definitely need to keep working on the coloring skills!

Thanks for the kind words and the vote GreyBelly! I really need to work on my rendering skills, and when I get the time I will take another shot at this to try and fix what didn't work. I was working on the Industrial design of the week, and when I put detachable pods on there, the detachable explosive body parts on this just dropped into place in my head...and indeed, they were cooler than the "torso/head" of the creature in the end. That kind of thing is why I really liked the cohesion campaign.

JakkaS - The rendering is fantastic, the description plausible, the results, big and beautiful.

honestly, i think you had such a strong relationship and similarities between your IDotW and this you should have come up with something modular... or really similar looking! but its all in the past now

Voted for Mike's. I think what's interesting about it, other than the cool rendering, is that the creature itself looks bomb-like. Some of the creatures here look like creatures... that just happen to carry a bomb. I think it's the proportions of the body to head that make it seem that way. I also like it's somewhat expressionless face, which makes me believe the scientists created a big, dumb, bomb-carrying creature.

Walnut - I liked the thought behind yours (as explained through your call-outs).

Soulweaver - You could've convinced me that your creature existed in this world, and that you were drawing a still-life of it. Really interesting rendering.

First time ever being on these forums and looking at these great threads, and then I noticed you got voting’s so I'll throw my two cents in.

Jakkas- You clearly get the award for most eye candy for sure. The rendering is just beautiful and I like this design.
When it comes down to it functioning and digging underground I'm not too sure how it would do. The round shape of the head would be perfect for ramming but what bother me is it's weak spot where it would explode. When digging a hole it just seems like a rock could get easily lodged into that thing and causing it to explode before arriving to it's destination. I think it's too overly exposed for me in that one bump on his back. If that was protected more it would of been perfect!

Neorepto- My vote goes to you. Again, an awesome design and rendering!
I personally like spikes, but at first this is what gave me second thoughts before voting...that was until I look at the tail. That tail to me looks like a drill when I look at it more closely. If this thing actually used that tail to make holes it would be extremely believable for it to dig holes in grounds and through hard surfaces fast without having any problems. I honestly love that timer on his face and how the people are just standing in front of it like a bunch of nimrods before the big bam. It's alot of fun and really cool, nice going man!

my vote went to MikeC best overall design and had all of the elements requested in the specs.
second up was Jakkas - damn, that's hot.
third up was Chuck, mate. with an incredible vision (and kick ass gif animation that didn't make it to final).
    cheers!
