Thumbs down Ouch! My TEEF HURT!

So I woke up at 3:30 am today, was driven to the oral surgeon, beat the rush hour traffic and arrived 3 hours early, waited outside in the cold until the place opened, and got all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled.

I was under general anesthesia, and felt nothing, but now the pain and swelling are kicking in! I guess it's too soon to see if I've got a wisdom tooth horror story, but I'm sure it's gonna suck in the next few days.

So, tell me any of your wisdom tooth/dentist/orthodontist horror stories to scare me while I heal.

man I had a blast getting my wisdom teeth pulled. I sat in the chair..they hooked up the drip, and said count backwards from 10. "10, 9...zzzzz"
I woke up in a completely different room...I have no idea how they got me in there. I'm kinda light - I wonder if one the nurses just threw me over her shoulder and dumped me on a bed.

After that they gave me codeine and I had a pretty pleasant week after that. I was hoping more wisdom teeth would grow just so I could live it all over again.

they had to drill into my jaw to get mine out... i threw up blood a couple times later that day, I guess I swallowed a lot.. shit was swollen for about a week and I had big black and blue bruises on one side of my face from my jaw about up to my cheekbone. Took forever for the bruise to heal, looked like I had jaundice for a better part of a month; it turned yellow after it was black & blue.

***gross*** then after it healed, I was really bad at cleaning out the holes, I was always rushing out to class after eating- don't do that! that shit was awful, food actually decomposing in cavities your mouth. seriously disgusting, like having lil bits of poop in your mouth. sorry to gross anyone out

somebody once threw a rock at me. they hit, my front teeth suffered. i was just a young, innocent lad at the time. after 2 hrs in that dentist's office, i knew the meaning of pain.

then, a couple of years later i had to go back, cuz i'd actually managed to break the dental work whilst running around in some forrest.

dammit, i can still remember that awful smell. that smell which, as i was sitting there in the dentist's chair, reminded my of the time i sawed up some moose-antlers cuz i was making a sheath for my knife. metal grinding into bone and the friction causing a strangely sweet smell of something burning.

i got my bottom braces put on a week ago and havent been able to clos emy mouth properly for a week. my top teeth rest on my bottom brackets, making it impossible for the rest of my teeth to touch as they should, this means i cant chew food.

i made spaghetti the other nice, but due to the face i cant bite threw the spaghetti, the spaghetti kept running down my neck half way. now i dunno if any of you have experienced that, but imagine having 1 end of a spaghetti noddle on the back of your tongue, and the rest of it sliding down your thoart. all this is while i have a mouth full of spaghetti.

this past week ive been in a constant state if discomfort and "eww". its pretty pretty gross.

i havent been able to eat anything that requires too much chewing, since theres like a centimeter gap between my molars. and you cant get full off smoothies... ive tried...

i had a baby eyetooth for a very long time and it just wouldn't come out. my dentist x-rayed the area and found out that my adult eye tooth was lying horizontally in the smack dab middle of the roof of my mouth, so they had to take out my baby tooth, dig into the roof of my mouth, attach a gold chain to that tooth and drag it down bit by bit into place. This took several years and it was very painful evertyime they tightened the chain.

My oral surgeon when he took my wisdom teeth out saw the progress of this tooth and said "hey, you know your orthodontist is bringing this tooth in backwards right?" Turns out the front of the tooth was facing inwards. I told my orthodontist this and he flipped out cursing the oral surgeon saying he doenst know what the hell hes talking about. I showed him what he meant...he said "oh. Oops".

I fired him and got a new orthodontist who had me out of braces in 9 months ;P

Rick Hershey needs to pop in, he just had some whicked work done back there.

Mine were out in about 7 minutes under a general. I only had them removed because cleaning was tough back there and I was starting to lose bone mass in my jaw.

I had all four out in no time... but I had no feeling in one vertical strip from my nose to my chin across my mouth for about a month. They weren't sure if feeling was going to come back at all... While it was numb I could do all sorts of cool things, though... like drool...

A long time ago in my childhood I was kicked in the side of the mouth. Then, one day a part of my back molar broke off. My dentist did all the fillings and whatever.

Then one day it fell out. I wasn't happy. It hurt. I got a nice big silver one. My tooth was now mostly silver stuff that kept chipping for ten years.

Then that fell out too. 't was fun to play with, actually. Taking it out, putting it back in.

Now I've got a porcelin filling that (hopefully) won't fall out for another twenty to thirty years. It also actually looks like a tooth, which is a plus. =)

when I was 16 I knocked my front teeth out training for BMX nationals.
I had a plate for a year, after the gum healed they used the bit of root that was left in there to stick the broken tooth back on. They had to cut away the healed gum to get to the root, then the tooth wss so badly crooked I almost cried, the false tooth was way better. At 21 they finaly said my jaw was ready for a permanant crown, that's what I got now and it's awsome.
looks %100 normal again. but the number of times I hit that temporary one out was rediculous, and everytime they had to give me injections in the roof of my mouth to stick it back.

other than that I had two baby teeth that never fell out, they went below the gum and turned quite solid, merged with my jaw bone too. So they had to crush them with what looked like tools from the hardware store. that was about 3 or 4 years back and I still sometimes find my gum pushing out small splinters of tooth.

But I aint had Wisdom problems, touch wood.

Weird... I just went to the dentist yesterday in 15 years. My wisdom teeth are buried deep in my jaw laying perfectly horizontal, exactly the same on both sides. The dentist said he's never seen them like that.

Necro: No way I can top that. Ho shit... I had my wisdom teeth out when I was 16 and aside from puking up some rich, brown, half digested blood on the first day, I was eating fried rice by the third day with no bruising..

...but my friend Sherry on the other hand: had her wisdom teeth taken out and while she was still under anesthesia, the dentist decided to take some castings of her mouth, with that gross impression compound that they put in those trays and make you bite into.

Everything was fine for 2 weeks, then she went to have her stitches taken out (this was before dissolving sutures were really used). The nurse removes the stitches and kinda stares... calls the dentist into the room.

"What are those bright green plugs sitting in her tooth sockets? They look like... OH GOD." The impression compound had slipped into her sockets since the idiot doctor took impressions minutes after she had her extractions. It solidified into her jaw and she had healed around it.

Of course, you really shouldn't have that stuff in your mouth, so they had to remove the plugs of compound and she had 4 DRY SOCKETS FOR 2 MONTHS. I'm told having your fingernails peeled back is more fun than even one dry socket.

gah some pretty gruesome stories I got off pretty lucky I guess

got all 4 out at 16, and I'd say it went smoothly; all I remember from the operation (mine were still in my gums when I got them removed) was shaking like crazy as the put the iv needle into me (needles probably one of the things I hate the most), then waking up in a different room and them taking out swabs with huge blood stains on em, then waking up on the couch back home. I was told I shook like crazy when they took me to another room, like I was freezing or something other than all of that, I was back up and in school within 4 days I'd say. painkillers helped alot, though I remember not having them even for a minute reaally sucked.

I had to remove a tooth from the top of my mouth that hadnt moved down like it should.. It was full grown and put insane pressure on my skull.

aaanyways, never, and i mean _never_ agree to doing dental surgery with only local anestesia(Sp?) unless you know what you are going to. I was lying there while they drilled, cracked and pulled at my upper jaw, feeling every vibration amplified ten times through my skull. I stopped cracking my fingers after that, it reminds me of the surgeon trying to pry my tooth out. Half an hour after the surgery, waiting for the bus, i got a sudden cramp in my stomack, and proceeded to puke out what seemed like litres of the blood i had swallowed.

    teeth are fun.

Yeah, figured i stop in- especially since it seems I'm not the only one who has those sideways wisdom teeth.

    Ouch! My TEEF HURT!

Well, you can see the wisdom tooth, but what you miss is that the crown of the WT actually grew inside of that molar, causing it to split and crack and eventually a filling come out. Over a months time large broken chuncks apparently had come off without me knowing it.

I've had ribs broken (my brother put them back) dislocated both wrists once, even did my own stitches (do not use sewing thread, you'll have to cut it out- dental floss dissolves) but the pain caused by this little fucking tooth dropped me to my knees and made my fucking cry- I was happy to have the bastard ripped from my skull.

On another teeth note- apparently I have a random selection of a 3rd set, all aparently worthless, but sitting in my gumline. . .

I had to get gum grafting surgery done last year and the year before. It's where they take a piece of tissue from your hard palette and graft it onto a point where your gums aren't quite thick enough. The surgery went fine, but my stepdad decided that *after* the surgery would be a good time to tell me my grandma had died... after the local anesthetic wore off and I couldn't move my face without pain. Now that was a good day, lemmie tell ya :p

My mom woke up in the middle of her wisdom tooth extraction to find the doctor with his knee braced on her chest trying to pull out the last one. She had it done in her 30's, and it's supposed to be easier the earlier you get it done. I'm glad I've already had mine out!

Just got mine out last summer (Julyish) Proceedure was fast...about 30-40 mins...all 4 taken out. When I woke up I felt like I had had sex 1 billion times...I felt sooo relaxed. Then about an hour later at home I started getting pain, etc. THey gave me codeine, but After taking one and almost passing out I decided against it and went only pennicillin and tylenol if needed. The pain was insane and I looked like a chipmunk with giant boulders in my mouth. My mouth seriously hurt for about 2 days straight. Worst part of it is attempting to eat food. I could only open my mouth slightly otherwise my stitches would bleed or pain would start kicking me in the nuts. My whole face was bruised along the sides of my jaw as well as down my neck. And to top it off a little over a week later I drove down to florida with my gf and her family....24hr drive YAY! Let me tell you give yourself a good month to heal before doing stupid things like i did....and MAKE SURE YOU CLEAN properly...if you dont you will be sorry.

i got 3 of my wisdom teeth taken out at once, with local anaesthesia. I'm a big guy, and a lot of the times, anaesthesia sorta doesn't last long enough.

So, the lady pulled out the one on my lower right just fine and dandy.

then, a minute later, she starts loosening up the other two. quite a lot of pain, but i figured it was normal. she started seeing tears in my eyes, and asked if everything was okay- i asked if it was normal that it hurts, if it's normal that i can feel my tongue, my cheek, and oh my god, my gums...

heh- she gave me another few shots and we had a laugh. oh, i hold the record for the most bounces on the floor for a tooth extraction- 9! ... yeah.

then, the last one, which i got cut out a few weeks later, went down with no incident... kinda boring.

Yea I had mine taken out a few months ago... Well 3 of them anyways. They were coming in sideways and hurt like a bitch! Apparently I had what they call L roots, which makes it really hard to get them out. They had to break them out in pieces, then drill them to make sure they got it, and then I had to get up and go to the Xray machine so they could make sure they got it all out. That process went on about 3 times per tooth. I was sooo messed up and when they told me I had to get up to go the Xray machine I was just like "ARE YOU KIDDING ME!". I stumbled and made it okay.... or at least from what I remember. My youger brother took me to the pharmacy so I could get the pain pills. I walk in with blood all in my mouth and packed with gause. I had to answer 50 million questions because I had never used that pharmacy before. Totally sucked and after I got the meds and went to get back in the car I felt this gagging feeling. I took the gause out of my mouth and then it happend. I threw up a crap load of blood, and I just couldn't stop throwing up. It really started to hurt when there was nothing to come up anymore. Anywas my face swelled up huge and the pain pills barely touched the pain. I had to have my face on ice 24/7 for a week before I actually looked somewhat normal! Not fun at all

I was at the dentist couple of weeks ago, for a checkup. They charged me with 10 cents a second, where 7 minutes was waiting for an xray plate. All she told me was "You know how to brush your teeth and they look fine".
    Thanks!

When I was a kid I had some problems though. I had an extratooth lying just over (under?) one of my front teef.. didn't hurt to take it out because I had like tons of shots with painstillers(painkillers? analgesics? ..)

Sounds like some of you had some real trouble though

    WOW. You people are HARDCORE!!

I was such a whiny baby about the whole thing. I was told I needed my wisdom teeth out at 16. I waited 'til yesterday. I'm 28.

Moral of story: Don't wait 12 years or else all of the work you had done like braces will be pushed aside by the wisdom teeth. They put pressure on my straight teeth throughout all of these years, and they caused my bite to go off and my upper teeth are now crooked again. So, maybe after all of these years I'll need yet another set of braces. Also, I must say, the pain of the pressure was much worse than the pain I'm feeling now.

Stupid evolution of our stupid jaws.

The only thing I remember about my wisdom teeth extraction was the gargling of warm salt water...it was and still is nasty.

The one thing I hated most with my braces experience was the process they did with my canines. Yep, I was one of those bonafide vampire-looking freaks when they decided to drop. I hate rubberbands to this day.

Braced, or no, my teeth are still crooked as heck.
