    gaijin's SB [9.27]

    Hello--
Here i'll post half finished stuff, abandoned pieces, sketches, studies and random stuff. And then I'll have to make more!
Scanner is in storage along with half of my stuff, so it's pure digi for now until I move into my new place.

old sketch for an unfinished mars painting

i've been using characterdesigns.com for quick studies, there's a lot of great poses and well lit figures for practicing.

Thanks Matt, I'll excavate the scanner one of these days, it's got a pile of desk junk on it. Here's another study and a sketch for a new painting.

That study in your second post is really good. I love how the skin lights up. The robot about to get his head torn off is neat too. I'd make his face (well, face) inder the hood darker though. And maybe show more of that big claw? Anyway, i like the loose style here.

    Thanks for the replies, everyone!
Sorry for the lack of updates, I've been very busy lately, and haven't had much time for the sketchbook. Here's an update though.

    gaijin's SB [9.27]
Another back study that quickly ended up as playing with a brush, unfinished. Just downloaded a Barontieri's brushpack, so now I've got to learn how to make some of my own!

    gaijin's SB [9.27]
Another version of the headphones-wearing octopus. He's groovin, but it's not quite working.

    gaijin's SB [9.27]
Modified, expanded canvas, changed arm positions (octopi don't have tentacles, just arms! And squids only have two tentacles. Huh, right?)

    gaijin's SB [9.27]
fun sketch i decided to use for this next enviro

    gaijin's SB [9.27]
Lots of issues to resolve but it's coming along. Hydroponic park on a mars colony, of course. Or something similar.

Woo that's it for now, gotta make some progress on those paintings. I'll scan the paper sketchbook for next time. Now for sleep, and then off to work.

    Sickly sketches

been under the weather the last few days, more time sleeping and less time drawing. But I did some sketching at least.

Damn dude, nice work. Checked out your site too, sweet to see how you took that glasses guy sketch into a spacescape. Throw some updates up, and I'll be a happy guy.

    Update

Well it's been a while! Thanks for the comments guys, I'll try to update more often now.

I've moved to LA, getting ready to move again though, so I'm living out of my gf's sister's livingroom which is cramped quarters. At least compared to when I had a studio But at least the computer is out of storage. Digital paint will have to do.

Here's a study, part of a set I hope to make, of bald/bare heads. Found the ref online somewhere... 3 hours spent painting I think. Noodled it a lot; I should get better reference.

You know you've done something right with your study when you managed to make a bald head look sexy.

tensai: i liked that one too--

    elisa: glad you're enjoying em

jeri: yeah, i can't disagree there, it helps to draw female heads though there is something attractive about them, maybe partly the neck

another head. this one was harder because the reference was low contrast... had to look up some anatomical reference points.

Very cool works, LOVE your digital work on the website you are just primed and ready to do some crazy stuff~* Keep it up w/ the head renders, I think its a great way to learn the planes and the basic shapes, my only suggestion would be to add a second light source (maybe warm and cool?) and try rendering that for more practice Hope to see more updates!!

    Chow

WIP of dragonfly/human hybrid. Job/apartment hunting takes too long. Rushed the final submission, and didn't finish the illustration I was hoping to use. But I learned a lot, I really need to do more character concepts and this is one more that I didn't have before. I'll go back and snug it up tomorrow, maybe play with color, because I really like the CHOW theme.

Hey mate, your studies are great!
Especially the three of the head and shoulders. Pretty tight.
I like your pencils the most, really good and expresive. More pencils!

finally started to seriously play with textures and custom brushes today, not mine though (barontieri's and some variations i've made). had to reinstall windows XP today too, computer barfed itself up

i liked this scribble, not entirely sure what's going on but i'll take it further. i'll make up a story for it.

Hey man there are cool studies in this SB! I like your rendering technique in the construction of head. The last image, i suppose is a wip, is more drammatic and sad.
    See you soon

Thanks Dreamworker. I'm stuck on this last one, and I've gone back a bit to the second wip posted here... it think it's more successful as an illustration somehow. Anyways. Here's a quick sketch for the IRC TD.
