The jury for the thirteenth annual Spectrum competition convened in
Kansas City, MO on the weekend March 3, 2006 to make their selections from over 4000 works of fantastic-themed art for this year's book. The jury has given special recognition for superior achievement to the following artists in each of seven categories. The artists receive a Spectrum Award sculpted by Joseph DeVito which rests on a base sculpted by Tom Banwell with either a gold or silver engraved plate bearing the recipients name. The jury consisted of Brom [artist], Bruce Jensen [artist], Christopher Klein [artist/art director NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC], Heidi MacDonald [journalist], Stephan Martiniere [artist], and Meg Walsh [artist]. Art works created by jurors were excluded from consideration for awards. All of the art selected by the judges will be included in Spectrum 13: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art to be published by Underwood Books of Nevada City, CA in October, 2006. Spectrum is distributed to the trade by Publishers Group West, Ingram, Baker & Taylor, and Diamond Comic

It's great that they're adding the category, but calling it that is only going to cause problems. "Concept art" or "production art" or "entertainment design" would all be better. Even just "games/film" as a category would be fine, and straightforward.

does this mean that the ones that made it in the annual but did not get awards were already notified that they're in?

Irene - is this the Deas cover that won the Gold from the Society on Friday? that has to be some of the best work i've seen from him.

    Cool, congrats everyone!

Hey Dan, where did you get that list? I checked the Spectrum site and didn't see anything. Thanks!

Irene, that Deas painting is gorgeous. The hands, the sihouette and the fabric... so nice. His painting for the Columbia logo always makes me drool a little. Thank you for posting.

    The Jones poster is awesome!

The Donato piece is incredible...it's so large you can start to loose your balance in front of it.

Amish - Yeah, that Deas is at the Society, and so is Foster great DEMON AND THE CITY.

I don't know the rest of the images...It'll be a long wait until October.

Nicolas - I got the press release for the award winners ONLY. The awards are debated on site, so they are known that day. For the rest of the book, the organizers need to do a whole lot more work to process and get the word out. I doubt anyone besides these artists will know if they got in for a while....Keep dem fingers crossed!

No, the mail notifications take a while to process and send. Last year there was a "hidden" pdf with the names of those who got in (but no details about which/how many pieces) a week or so before the letters went out.

Anyone with thoughts on what the criteria for the "concept art" section should be, post away. I'll pass the word on.

Beautiful illustration by Michael Deas, such a strict classic beauty face, and clothes are very strict, but refined. The landscape makes it more tense. My general feeling from the painting is a worrisome expectation of something to about to happen.
Congratulations to everyone! That's a great news! Wish I could see the art.
