What makes you want to be an artist?

    Well, what?

I guess I'm asking because, I'm a senior in highschool now & started becoming seriously involved in art only since my first art class in my junior year. I just got accepted to SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design). And I *really* want to go. But I've also been accepted to my local Sate University (one where my dad's a proffessor at). I just don't know which to choose. I don't know if I want a career in art. If I went to the University, I'd try and persue a law degree (via political science major).

I guess one of my fantasies is just being able to design things for a living and creating ideas.

But I also really enjoy law & politics.

How did YOU decide to the art-career path in life? Any regrets? Was there anything else you thought of doing? Or, are you doing art because it was really the only thing you *could* do in life?

I never chose to be an artist, I just am one.

However, carrier wise i was lucky enough to have a keen eye for business, so i picked the carrier path which paid more. Still the avid artist, nonetheless.

artist or lawyer? wow. I mean, are you equally interested or are you also feeling pressure from the folks to get a "real" degree? Because I understand that's quite common. If that's the case, I think you'll regret not following your own dreams.

But if you really are torn between two such vastly different career paths, I don't know what to tell you. Do you want the relative security and financial stability of a career in law or the flexibility and adventure (be that good or bad) of a career in the arts? Which do you think you would recieve more satisfaction from? Which would more likely fullfill your needs?

I myself get a panic attack thinking about working a 9-5, vacation days, retirement, etc. I know that that is not the kind of life that I would personally be happy with. Get to the bottom of some hard questions with yourself.

It feels like I didn't chose to do artwork... it just happened. Almost like a snowball effect... as a small child I pick up a pencil, belt out some scribble, and decided that it was fun. It's escalated into nowadays where I experiment with both traditional and digital media.

I'm kind of in the same situation as you, phedre. Junior, it's nearly application time and I'm applying to art schools and having to deal with some major self-doubt. What makes me want to be an artist is something I am unable to describe as anything other than pure passion for it, it's something I have loved since a young age, and ideally the lifestyle I wish to acquire. But there is always the nagging voice telling me, "You'll never be able to support yourself on it, get a regular job" etc etc. I'll figure it out, or just learn to ignore the voices. Good luck!

you shouldnt be asking that question if you know what i mean.

not sure what artist is, perhaps a story teller and creator.

create or destroy you choose young grasshopper.

i dont think its a choise thou. its what you do and thats it. rest of the stuff just feels like donkey balls no matter what you do.

if its a matter of skill then perhaps you havent discovered your thing yet.

Study what you think is enjoyable. If you think both are as fun, study both (then art would probably have to be studied in your free time). If you actually love WORKING by drawing/painting etc. then go for it. What I mean is that many people get confused with what they think would be cool for them to be doing and what they really LOVE doing. Just don't fool yourself and you will be 100% fine.

Exactly what everyone else is saying. I was in your position only a few years ago, torn between two avenues in life. Before I could really choose, things just fell into place and I could see what I wanted to do with my life, and that was through creativity, through art/design. Don't feel pressured by what other people say or think, just make the decision for yourself.

    Good luck!

I'm too dumb to be a lawyer because i always had to draw instead of doing homework.

But really, lawyer or artist? You should be able to answer that question yourself. Ask yourself which life you want to live. Thats two completely different paths you can take, and it's up to you to know where you'll feel more comfortable.

yeah, i was told chicks love guys who can draw pretty pictures....and i like girls, so...

    [emo]DAMN YOU, YOU BASTARD - YOU LIED!!![/emo]

uhm, no, really...because i have an acute sense of life's transience, and i don't want to do stuff that i don't like.

(err...that just explains why i'm poor...)

because i really like it...in fact, to me it's like eating. i have to do it, or i weaken and get depressed.

...which actually also happens when i don't eat....so why don't i get a REAL job that puts some food on the table, dammit?!?!? i'm like one step away from living under a bridge ffs! this sucks!

dammit, i swear, this was supposed to be a more serious post...i'm really sorry. you gotta do what feels right, man. and you KNOW what feels right, deep down. don't worry about 15 years into the future....you'll be somewhere beyond your present understanding anyways. think about now. don't follow in your father's footsteps unless your wearing the same kinda shoes. (not even sure what that is supposed to mean, but it seems to make some sort of sense?....aw, i give up.)

and now i'm hungry...again. gonna go eat some crayons.
In the future, everyone will have 15 minutes of privacy.

A teacher once told me if your up at two in the morning doing something and loving it than you should probably be looking to make a career out of it. For me when I was in college I'd always procrastinate like hell on almost all of my assignments, odd being that I went to an art college, but I put everything of to the last minute because I was working on my own projects, creating characters and giving them stories. So after a few bad jobs I know now absolutely what I want to do. It's what motivates me the most, I can't help it I just have to draw.

    Art is therapeutic.

Powerful art excites emotion in others.

Visual art can express things more powerfully than words ever could.

For me, it's about bringing out what's inside of me and making it a readable thing for people who are going to see it so I can clearify the moods, idea's, stories and concepts that I have in my head that I cant explain.

An other reason is that I want/like to do art is because every thing I draw is my own world where I can fly. The sky is the limit, and I want to create my own sky.
I'm obsessed with invisible things. Sounds, wind, energy. Coffee.

thats definetly the best attitude to stay poor as an artist.

That quote is the reason why alot of talented people are living of crap money.....geeez, why don't you kick yourself in the groin while you're at it.

seriously, If you think that little of your work, then everyone else will too.
