B-Man, No problem man! I know it wasn't in the CC section , and it wasn't really a crit, more like a tip ^^ thanks!

I was inspired to draw when I looked through Mrgrumbles sketchbook, did a self portrait.. spend way to much time, and still the eyes turned out shit
( my self portraits use to look like aliens )

It was hard to scan a3 on a4 scanner..

    WOW !
    Very nice man! !
What would make it better would be to follow the shape with your hatching.
Especially for the cheeks, mouth, nose, eyes... hummm...everywhere
    Keep pushing man !

Dang, what are you eating man? I sure as hell didn't do shit like this when I was 15 Keep it up and you're gonna be a sick cat at my age. Real nice sp, the fingers looks thicker on the hand not holding the pencil though, I'd guess the pencil hand is a little to small.

    Keep it up

Really good start with the self portrait. Very nicely constructed. Watch how much you render though, all the shadows look the same value. Remember your light source is on the upper left corner, so the shadows directly to the right of the nose and under it will be much darker than the areas that is facing the light source.

hehe, good job, dennis. you're improving and it tells.
the portrait is very nice as construction and lighting but i would suggest a more organic-like render..
danielC and bendragon are both right..use accents to point out darker areas and also keep in mind to chase the face volumes with your render.
other than that, you're really getting there pal..

YO! The ship is lookin very nice, i really like the colour palette you've chosen, it works very well. I felt a sudden urge to add some deep reds into the background for some reason. Dunno why ;P. I'd also fade out the upper area of the background structures. Looking forward to seeing further progress on it.

The portrait is also very well drawn. Points all round!

    Aaarrgh,
Young talents are appearing like raindrops.
So good at your age, at any age really. Quite talented and observant.
    Excellent studies and thinking.
One crit on the last enviro, which I really like, is that the light values in the BG are competeing with the lights in the main object. Can fix, I suppose, by going lighter than or darker than forground object, and/or less contrast. But tis a study and the shapes are attractive and interesting in any case.

Oh, and can you stunt your growth and not get any better? Thanks.

  • Thanks guys!

I'm sorry for my lack of updates I didn't drew anything for two days after
that self portrait, and when i "came back to it" I realized a lot of fault and ugliness in my stuff been working on it since that.. pretty much all of my free time have been studying faces and colours.. I also had some problems with school.. I don't wanna say its a negative problem but its still hard to change my habits.. Cause I'm lazy in school ohwell.. I don't have much to show right now, just this quicky quicky thing. been working mostly with traditional colours =) I hope that I can start to improve "faster" by realizing my own problems , , I really needed this 2 days break^^

I will bring my sketchbook to the gymnastic competition tomorrow.. hopefully
i can study some eyes and ears ^^

    ohwell.. Photoshop, 1 hour almost

hey friend! your going berserk! its been a terribly long time since i came here but hell yeah the space ship is gorgeous! really nice things to look at everywhere, like there are so many levels of interest. and the reddish shadows work awesomely with the rest of the pallet.
Your selfportrait kicks ass also, but as daniel said following the contours of the forms with your strokes would make it heaps better. proportions seem really good, although your left ear(our right) is bigger than the other, remember to always compare what your drawing to everything else (and obviously if its a symmetrical feature compare it to the feature on the other side). its great to see you describing the shirt with such clean lines.
do more selfportraits man, theres nothing better to study from than life and there is no one more willing to pose for you than yourself!

you rule! keep learning, keep progressing and keep having fun!

looking good, as usual dile. i actually like the self portrait despite that you think it didn't turn out as good. just remember to set up the structure of the skull, which will save you a lot of guessing later on. i really like the drawing of the girl on #386 with the patchwork outfit. the spaceship is looking good as well, remember to keep your edges sharp for clarity. good stuff bro! keep busting ass

  • Thanks guys, i'm short on time but I will reply proper tomorrow!

so Kjartan or if you prefer, Wolfbane showed me his vids and made me do one myself ^^

you can choose whatever to laugh or cry.. i'd go with laugh myself but here it is! 46 minutes of painting , 120 minutes of trying out compression tools, and 60 minutes of uploading! so much for so less.

    meh...

holy shit! i'm actually finding it hard to believe you did that man, that's truly a step up. wheres the picture?! it looks great!
i do have crits though, i really liked it when it wasn't cropped, composition wise it was fantastic. if you kept the legs in the air i think it could have been a better piece.
buut maybe its just me, great job either way!

ok, what to say? You said YOU're jeaslous of MY progress? Well you have to see something in my work, I don't see or you are just tossing around compliments without meaning anything.

You know what? everyone already told you how good you are and how nicely you already improved and also gave good critiques where it was due.

Unfortunately I don't know of anything I could give to you. Let's try it this way: If you have anything specific you want to ask me, pm me and I'll rant about it. Right now I am too busy struggling with my own faults to crit out of the blue.

Just one thing: Take your frigging time! It doesn't matter how long a scetch or a painting takes you. Set your goals beforehand and stop when you reached them, not one second before.

Sorry that I can't tell you much but YOUR progress is fucking jawdropping.

Heres a speedpaint I did to figure out some about enviroments, and how the brain use its "fill in" function, and when the brain does it at its best .. complicated, and all a part of my stupid thoughts... I should stop thinking instead and go draw.... >.<

Well, I understand what you mean by fill-in function It is mostly a matter of practice and after a while your brain speaks the language of form. Actually, it is very much like a language, where you learn the vocabulary and the grammar in countless frustrating hours and when you begin to talk freely, all the practice takes off and your brain provides you with the words you need.

Also, I understand why people didn't like your mass-update. That is because your work sucked back then and people didn't want to see it. Now, it rocks and you shouldn't hesitate to show off.

Either way, your blog is Bookmarkified, even though I can't comment on it.
