    Looks great Dennis.
You're making huge steps forward with every new sketchbook page. Makes me jealous. =A=

A small note on the last painting:
Play around with her face a bit more. It's the first thing you look at, and beside of her hairstyle, it doesn't look very remarkable. But the rest of the image looks awesome. I love the rendering on the gun and the green/yellow coming from the bottom left corner.

    Keep it up!

    Killing it dude! Awesome stuff

I love the latest painting, I just wanted to make a few changes though to address a couple issues I saw. This is certainly not the only solution, and I probably overdid it in a few areas (subtlety isn't easy to get in a quick paintover!).

    Name: dile.jpg
Views: 787
Size: 425.8 KB

    Anyways, the issues:

-Head awkwardly sitting on neck, not viewed from low enough angle based on horizon line. I moved the head, showed a bit of the underneath plane of the jaw, changed the mouth shape to lower viewpoint. Also changed the eyebrows and the shadow between eye/nose/eyebrow to be a bit stronger shaped and bold. As Mullins says in that pdf, attractive females usually have less emphasis on facial structure and forms, and greater emphasis on strong graphic shapes and values of the features.

-Hair is really lame, not a natural feel to it, painted as a flat shape instead of forms, not interesting shaped. Hair is a great opportunity for shape design, and lots of little positive/negative shapes, so I was surprised that you didn't take advantage of this given how skilled you are at shape design.

-Image too dark overall. Especially in thumbnail view I notice that this image has large flat dark areas with no real information (like the entire lefthand side of the painting). I added a greater influence of the ambient blue light of the sky to upper planes to help lighten things up, and cut out more shapes. I also added a bit of direct sunlight from between buildings cast onto the left side of the painting (and one in the top right). I don't think the shapes I put there are very successful, but there is lots of opportunity there for interesting things with bits of light cast there. It also help contextualize why the girl has her head in light.

-Added light to girl on her leg and shoulder/arm. Her head was in full light, but nothing else was??

-The colour was pretty weird on the original to be honest...there are a lot of strong greens in there. The far building is straight up green, and there are some green spots in her hair...I'm not sure if this was intentional or because of your colour blindness, but in any case I found it strange looking. I tried to shift the colours to more of a blue/purple hue in the shadows, also to give the painting a little more complementary palette with the yellow/orange of the buildings/her face. The clouds in the distance are a purplish colour, which isn't consistent with the mid-day strong sunlight you have set up. On days like that, clouds will be yellowish, and start to take on a more red/purple hue only when they are suuuuuper far away (only seen on clouds right near the horizon they are so far away), this is because of Rayleigh Scattering.

Anyways, hope you don't mind my scribbles ontop of your awesome painting...and hopefully one or two things I said make some sense haha!

Hey Andrew, thats one of the best paintovers I've recieved on this site so thanks a lot buddy! I wanted to call it done and never touch it again, but since your crits were so damn good and spot on, I felt I had at least try to make an attempt at putting some of that sonea flavour in there!

Nemome: Thank you, I agree, I *still* feel I can do more with the face. But for being me, and having done very few characters in paintings to date, I feel a little good just because it's possible to make out a face at all! Thats how horrible I am with that stuff, and thats why I am now focusing so god damn hard on it! Hopefully the "little changes" i've done helps a bit, and when I get back to it, I'll try to sculpt those forms out a little more and bring some extra attention to her! I really appreciate the crit man!

    Blazingdimensions: My pleasure! Thanks!

Flaskpost: hahahha! It's the light, I promise you! ; ) Thank you my dear kind sir!

Other news: My "conquer mars" piece (here http://fruktsallad.deviantart.com/ar...mars-353177284 ) and I got featured today in the daily deviations.. right now my mind is completely blown about how much trafic that site can get you.. I counted over 5000+ views just today and more than 700 favs..Just on that one piece! :ooo I really don't know what to say except for that..insane!

    Hey there Will,

Very solid stuff you are putting out lately!
    Warmup: Alien reference I guess?
I tried LAB for photos but never for painting. Can you describe the advantages you got out of it?

Revisited: Great improvement over the last post. her right hand looks kinda stiff. Watch the size of the hands also.
    Love the limited palette.

    cheers

Sorry for the lack of "art" in here. I'm busy with freelance, and the little sparetime I have is spent with family and/or in zbrush.. :E

AndreasM: Thanks a lot man! It's getting there haha! And same right back at you!

Just wanted to say that I'm still alive..kinda! A lot of things going on at the moment, both good and bad! (mostly good!) also right in the middle of moving.. yeah yeah..anyways.

Here is a sketch i posted on my blog yesterday. ( http://www.dennisbjorkart.blogspot.com ) Got a few more of these that I haven't saved as jpegs yet but soon! Feels pretty good to be working with lines again. I'm also finishing up a couple of art-tests that I'll be able to post shortly. woho!

So... I've updated this sketchbook 2-3 times the past few months, and I manage to hit the data-base roll-backs everytime. Lets see if this one sticks! I wish I had more to show, but for the last month or so I've been tied up in freelance, which is fun, but also moving to my new apartment Finally got "everything" setup and working. The only problem is that it doesn't have any internet or phoneline access yet.. so it will take a while for me to get back online..Currently operating at 22kbps!

Kickass update Dennis - still unfortunate I couldn't get to meet you in London. Maybe next time, do have a ways to catch up But have to work on a few things personally for now.

Keep the updates coming, always a pleasure to look at your work. (Remember when I said regarding your work being of the same quality, if not better, as a certain legend I mentioned in the past to you? I still hold firm to that )

I haven't really looked in here since my post, I guess I was kinda expecting it to disappear like the last ones as well.. Glad ca stays online though!

John: thanks a lot man, I really appreciate those words haha I hope I can catch up on other things as well..! It's being worked on. And yeah, now that my bank-account is looking better and better each month, I really regret not getting those tickets..but well.you can't really know with freelance can you. I still consider myself to be in the start-up phase as well.. ^.^

Papu: thanks man! I will try to.

Non-art update, was digging up my sketchbook (which is now merged into one thread for the first time in 4 or so years!) for someone on FB and saw the replies.

Basically I'm really busy with work and I've also moved to my own place again and things are just starting to get a little more calm which hopefully means I'll have time to do something personal or get to post some of my work stuff soon!

    Cheers everyone for looking!..

    Woooooah.
This is the first time I visit your sketchbook and I must say, your progress is astonishing compared to your first studies!
I just started my own sketchbook, and I hope my progress will become as striking as yours.

    Keep the good stuff comin'
