Does anyone know what's happened to the Athenaeum?

My favourite image archive disappeared in front of my eyes two days ago and the strain is starting to show.

    http://www.the-athenaeum.org/

For anyone who hasn't seen it, and doesn't know why I'm stressed, here's a list of their top 20 artists by picture count:

    Pierre Auguste Renoir 1106 images
    Claude Oscar Monet 1072
    Camille Pissarro 835
    John Singer Sargent 713
    Eugène-Louis Boudin 685
    Edgar Degas 513
    Paul Gauguin 497
    Paul Cezanne 485
    Winslow Homer 461
    Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot 379
    Alfred Sisley 375
    Maurice Prendergast 335
    Odilon Redon 318
    William Merritt Chase 282
    Mary Cassatt 275
    Albert Bierstadt 265
    Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec 253
    Amedeo Modigliani 242
    Egon Schiele 242
    Thomas Moran 235

Does this mean I'm going to have to go back to Chairman Fred and his freakin' Art Reversal Center? Oh, crap!

Thanks for the response, egerie. I'll keep trying and report back here if I have any luck. The site was around for quite a while, but it got really good over the last few months. By the way, do you know the Spanish site Ciudad de la Pintura - it's also pretty amazing:

    Artist index
    http://pintura.aut.org/SearchAutor?A...=A?SinLimite=1

The pictures are a decent size (keep clicking until you get to the zoom window), though the ones on the Athenaeum are/were often bigger. This page gives their top 140 artists - all of them are represented by dozens or hundreds of images:

Geeze guys don't you know ... you have to download the internets so things like this won't happen. Actually I'm not kidding. I have contemplated alot about whether or not to download entire websites just because I like them so much and what would happen if they went down... forever?

    egerie,

Well, the last bit is always good advice, but the first bit is a surprise - I did quite a lot of poking around on the site yesterday without hitting a single broken link. Please tell me some of the artists where you struck trouble so I can see if they work for me. Also, if you get a chance, maybe you could see if you have more luck on a different computer.

OK, perhaps I'm clueless or ""Evil"" in a John Lovitz sort of way....

How do I download the images? When I try to save an image I keep getting the php script. What I've been doing is copying the image and pasting it into photoshop and saving it that way, but it's hella slow. All I want is some inspiration and some ref... is that asking too much!?

    EDIT

I just renamed the "display_image.php" to the "the image.jpg" in the "Save image as" dialogue.

    Thanks!! This place is amazing!!

Awsome site, I've only been browsing for an hour or so and have already seen stuff by some of my favorites that I had either never seen, or had seen only as low rez thumbnails.

You have my eternal gratitude briggsy.

You just have to left click (or Mac equivalent) on the thumbnail to bring up the high-res image window. Then you should be able to either right-click or equivalent on this image and using the "save image" command, or simply click and drag the image to a folder. If you have a slow connection you can click and drag the downloading high-res image into the window of a download manager like NetTransport, if you can't be bothered waiting for the whole image to come up.

Smile Message from the web master of The Athenaeum

Hey guys. Found this thread through my good friend, Google Analytics. You guys have a really nice community here. I don't paint nearly as often as I'd like; this kind of inspiration might spur me on a bit more.

I'm the web master for The Athenaeum (http://www.the-athenaeum.org), and I just wanted to say a couple of things:

    - The outage was due to an ISP screwup. It took us a little while to get our DNS issues ironed out, but we are fully recovered, and the site is exactly as before. Even in the worst case, we have backups, and I am committed to paying the dedicated server costs essentially forever. The site's been around for five years now, and barring me losing my job, it *will* be around in the future.

    - Regarding saving images: At one time, lots of people were leeching images using the display script, essentially calling it on their own pages to display our images without giving us any credit. So, we put a check in that doesn't allow the script to be called from outside our site. However, you should be able to save the image page as a jpeg and use the image for whatever. If you want to bookmark images, just bookmark the painting detail page (the page with the thumbnail) instead.

Thanks for noticing the site. I've worked on it for a long time, and there is much more still to do. If you have ideas/suggestions, feel free to let me know, through the contact e-mail on the site itself.

    - Chris McCormick

    Hi Chris,

Can you include thumbnails for all the work?

I assume you mean when you are looking at a list of artworks for an artist. I have a dedicated server now, with a fair amount of bandwidth, but earlier I was going over my bandwidth limit pretty regularly. As some of our artists started having lots of artworks (we have more than 1000 by Renoir and Monet each), I decided that loading 1000 thumbnails at 2 to 4 KB each (in other words, a web page that is 2-4 MB) might not be such a good idea. :-)

I took the shortcut of coding in that if an artist has fewer than 100 artworks, thumbs are displayed, otherwise, they are not. What I need to do is revisit the code that deals with paging through the artworks. It would show thumbnails for everybody, but you would have to page through results 100 at a time.

The last time I tried to write something like that, I had some issues, and I put it aside for a while. Maybe I'll revisit that logic soon.

    Thanks for the idea.

    - Chris

    Athanaeum : awesome !

briggsy: It's still happening but I suspect some kind of firewall/security setting kicking in since I'm surfing from work. Oh well.

Glad to help, my friend. Lately I've been keeping busy by adding an art history section to the links page of our wiki. I'm about three-quarters of the way through posting my links, so take a look if you want to see what I've been up to:

    There.. is.. another..... sky.. walkahhh..

Hi guys. Great site that. Instant bookmark. But there is another:
    The art renewal center: http://www.artrenewal.org/asp/database/contents.asp

It's not as sleek and fast, but it has got a good deal of art.

Umm, thanks Diruo, and welcome to conceptart.org. I think artrenewal is a great resource, despite my slight sarcasm at the top of this page.
It's on my list along with about 50 more image archives (so far) here:
