    █▓▒░ Deselect's Little Black Book ░▒▓█ (Updated Nov 28 2006)

    ב״ה

After quite some time of lurking on these boards I have decided to post some of my own work.

To make a long story short, I have struggled with my art for years -- putting it off most of my life as I never thought I would get anywhere with it and became terribly uninspired.

All of that changed after meeting my wife Anja. She has been my muse ever since.

I was in a cast recently as the result of being hit in a head on collision from someone driving drunk. For four months for my broken wrist (dominant one, of course) prevented me from being able to persue my art. It has now been off for about a month and amidst all of the specialists I see to correct my injuries I have been feverishly catching up with all of the lost years and taking it seriously.

I am hoping to build up enough works soon to compile a portfolio and get out on the scene.

Anyway, on to the art work.

Disclaimer: Please excuse the terrible quality of these scans, I was using my friend's multipurpose scanner/printer/fax and discovered a few things. First, I discovered that HB pencil doesnt scan well on cheap scanners (my other pencils were stolen) and secondly, multipurpose scanner combos are bad ideas. Considering I do not have my own scanner, I cannot complain.

Here is one of my first serious sketch in many years. First one since my wrist has been freed. One hour foot study:

    █▓▒░ Deselect's Little Black Book ░▒▓█ (Updated Nov 28 2006)

One hour study from reference. Trying to get better with contours and simple blocks of shade:

    █▓▒░ Deselect's Little Black Book ░▒▓█ (Updated Nov 28 2006)

Most recent one from just a few nights ago. 2 hour study from reference:

    █▓▒░ Deselect's Little Black Book ░▒▓█ (Updated Nov 28 2006)

Many of the pencil tones are missing from these images. I am going to try to hunt down a scanner more suitable to use. I have some more images to post if anyone would be interested in seeing them, along with paintings, etc.

Any feedback, comments, or critiques would be most appreciated.

    Cheers.

Nice stuff! I really like the last one with the girl in the zorro mask. I like the tones you got on it and the way you drew it... with like strokes outward.
That foot study is swell as well. Wow, after years of not drawing, you're having a pretty good comback.

Very nice. That foot is clean. And the third one's my favorite, love the eyes and expression. Also like MattGamer said, the strokes really bring it to life.

Thank you very much for all of the nice comments.

I have some older sketches from the book available to share. They are a bit explicit, so I am not sure if that breaks any of the rules for this board.

Once again, I wish I had a better scanner to show clearer images and details of those drawings, they look much better in person.

The last one was a lot of fun to draw. I am trying to really loosen up when drawing but still achieve realism in the tones. A problem I used to suffer from greatly was the fear of drawing or painting on good papers and canvases for fear of 'wasting' the materials on an end product I disliked.

I will update with some older sketches shortly.

EDIT: On a side note, would anyone be able to suggest a good value scanner that is very affordable? I really ought to buy myself a scanner but do not have a whole lot of cash to spend. Thanks.

    Cheers,

Jens: Thanks. I would love to show some new sketches but no longer trust the scanner I had used before... I hopefully will find a new one to borrow or may end up buying one. I do have some paintings I can photograph.

Does anyone know why my images are not consistantly showing up?
I used the same BBCode to share the images in my first post as I did the one previous to this message, yet the latter ones only show up some of the times? It's not a hosting issue.... It's really bothersome.

    Thanks.

Sorry to hear about the accident man. I'm a lefty and I almost lost my hand by getting t-boned a year ago by some idiot yapping on her cell. So cool that you picked up the pencil again. Your technique is top notch. I'd like to see more. Keep posting man!

MrBobMarley: Thanks, man. Its been an emotional ride, for sure. I have been known to have some of my own internal struggles going on with my art and why it stopped, and this accident was just part of the equation that had me go full force... That, and Anja, as said. Best part of it is, where I live, I cannot sue her, I was given no compensation at all and now I am on small disability cheques... I need to find a new job.

SpaceAce: Thank you very much. Now just to find the optimal medium for my to start realising it soon. The table top is to rest from shoulder to the bum and it will be glass... The rest is to be decided.

EDIT: I have more to post, for sure... Problem at the moment is getting a decent scanner. I may just use my camera and have a go at it that way. Thanks for the views.

Thanks, Gmags and Darktwin. Yeah things could be worse. Dont get me started on my luck, though. It would be the longest thread on CA.
Anyway, I just finished some nice 1 hr studies I am quite proud of, may upload tomorrow.

Here's a recent 20 min sketch I did of a Shofar (a traditional jewish instrument made from a ram horn):

    █▓▒░ Deselect's Little Black Book ░▒▓█ (Updated Nov 28 2006)

Trying to get better at using solid contour lines without erasing. From reference:

    █▓▒░ Deselect's Little Black Book ░▒▓█ (Updated Nov 28 2006)

Here is an old design I did (back from 2004) when I was apprenticing to become a tattoo artist. The client wanted a gargoyle:

    █▓▒░ Deselect's Little Black Book ░▒▓█ (Updated Nov 28 2006)

Here is a sketch I did in my sketchbook a few days ago. Finished all of the pencil in 3 hours or less and was quite proud of it. Then I decided to try to heighten it with coloured pencil and now I rather dislike it. Posting it anyway to show that I won't just post my more favoured sketches. Roméo Dallaire, Pencil, Tea, Coloured Pencil, ~ 3 hours:

omfg I just lost my post when trying to post it on your thread, damn. anyways what I said before was I really like your contour line drawing of the women, I need to do more of those to strengthen my line quality, did you use pen for that?? also I really like this last portrait of yours really nice rendering and color you washed it with is very interesting. My only crit would be I think there should be a little more contrast between the lights and darks of the portrat, unless thats what you were going for. the wash probably soften everything, its jus something minor, I really dig it man.

about my master copy drawing, I'll have to repost that today after darkening a few more values. right now I'm in a drawing slump, I have ideas but nothing really excites me right now you know. what do you do if you've experienced the same thing. Just curious to hear what other artist do when in this situation?

Darktwin: Thank you very much. The Dallaire piece turned out a total disappointment. The problem with the tonal range is something I am aware of. It was partky due to the tea stain covering up a lot of the light tones from the HB and partly due to the fact that I no longer have any pencils besides one HB lead... I really wish I had some softer leads to have darkened it for sure. If I had gone over it any harder with the HB it would have started to cause nasty glare.

The contour of the woman is in fact pencil, pressed firmly (but not too hard). Lately, I have been completing a number of drawings making sure I do not use any eraser at all. The Dallaire portrait was one of these -- no eraser used at all.

Part of the reason why I am focusing on contours is due to my style of not using any form of measurement for images beyond simply visualising distances etc. So, where some may use grids, etc to do pieces, I try to nail it down properly right off the bat.

    Erasers are annoying.

As for the stale times where I do not want to draw: I have had years and years of that constantly. I also face that with making music at times. I find I have two options; 1) Take some time away from it and decompress. Get inspired from something else or just take a good 30 minutes away from the task, or 2) Sometimes when you get down the best thing is to pick up the pencil and force yourself. This helps twofold -- at times you have no choice, especially if you want to make a career out of art so its best to face it now and force yourself at times, and the other is that sometimes out of some daunting or bland task you can really get into it. For me, sometimes just rendering some bland object really lets you focus on your ability.

One of my next such tasks will be to render an egg. Exciting, yeah? The important thing is to realise that a boring oval egg is in fact something of great difficulty to render and make it appear as an egg. The simple shape is decieving, nailing the tones, texture and shades are very challenging.

I would have done that last night, but I ate all our eggs.

haha, thats funny about the eggs, at least eggs are cheap so you can pick them up anytime. thanks a lot for taking the time and giving me your perspective on things. I think I'm going to have to force myself through it man, I'm going to a workshop today and I'll be sure to post whatever I come up with. Thanks again, and I'll talk to you later

Hey man, great stuff, love that contour drawing! "Erasers are annoying", true that.
You form seems to be pretty top notch too, just keep it coming. My brother is pretty proficient in weird instruments and I'd never heard of a Shofar. Looks cool, would love to hear one.
About the Roméo Dallaire peice, agreed the tonal range is a bit one the light side, maybe more spot washes of tea would strenghten the darks? I don't know I've never worked with tea, but I imagine it's similar to ink washes. It's a fun drawing though.
    Lookin forward to more.

Andy P: Thank you very much. A shofar is not very well known to musical instrument folks (I am quite interested in a variety, as well) as it is more of a religious instrument. For more info check here.

As for the tonal range, I think I will go over it some more with softer leads once I have acquired some for myself. The tea won't get much darker but would rather buckle the paper quite badly instead.

I'll post more as soon as I can get around to it.

    Cheers!

Hey Deselect - sorry it took me a day to get in here after your request!
Sweet work - definitely go with the positive forward momentum you have in your fixed wrist and your muse - obviously there is something wonderful there. Keep on the anatomy work and life studies, they're wonderful. You have a good eye for contour and your tone work is pretty slick. Keep it real!
