Some of my comic book pages (pencils)new images added 13 September '08(on page #16)

Here is a small sample of my comic book work. As I mentioned in a previous thread, I hope the fact that these are the pencils doesn't dissallow them from the Finally Finished forum. They are from my current job at the house of ideas...that's Marvel, non-believers.

    Comments welcome.

wow! really nice! In the panel where one of the dudes kneels by his partner because he just got shot. those hands are so expressive, I know exactly what he must be feeling. Very powerful! I would love to see it inked as well.

Ahhh, it does the heart good to see pencil work from the comic field. Very nice work, Staz. I love the panel work in all of these. I'm loving pages 3, 18, and 26. I personally would love to see more. A great contribution to the FF thread.

The big guy looks a little akward in that pose right after he kills those three guys, but that's the only thing that caught my eye. Beautiful work, sir. The amount of detail on these (especially in the port scene) is awesome! Here's hopin' you got a great inker, letterer and colorist for these.

Thanks for the uniformly positive responses guys.

    Barts:Thanks mate.

nicolas:I'll try to get around to posting the inked version of these pages. They were inked by the great Tom Palmer who has done a fantastic job. Hopefully Tom & I will continue to work together. I know what you mean about Kevin Nowlan though, unfortunately I havn't worked with him. I will definately post more pencils when I get chance.

    Lone Wolf: Again, thanks.

vigostar: Delicious? Wow, never had my work called that before...

poise: Thanks for noticing that, it's nice to know that the subtleties of body language & location etc aren't lost on everyone, most people can't see beyond the big splash images of Batman coming thru a plate glass window, or whatever.

Okay, that's three requests for Tom's inks, so here are a few. There's all the inked versions of the pencil pages I posted, plus one more, which is a favorite of mine after my editor said it looked like him after a night in the pub.

Mr. Visions: Thanks mate, as I said earlier, I'll post some more pencil pages when I get chance & when I have a few worthy of inclusion on these boards.

Mirana: Oooo... criticism. Thanks for being kind about it tho & I'll take it on board, I can sorta see what you mean.
The trick about comics (I feel) is knowing just how much detail to put in or leave out. Too much (& I see a lot of that) & the page looks cluttered, & the story telling is lost...too little & any sense of place is lost, I've been guilty of that myself at times when a deadline looms.
As you can see Tom has done a great job on the inks, & from what I've seen of the coloring that is also looking nice.

    Hey Staz,

These are great. I think I like the pencils better than the inks, although they are both really good.

I really like the detail and expression you put into the faces, even the middle distance characters have more detail and expression in their faces than some comic artists put in.

great stuff, I'd like to see more.

Huh. Was the grey matter coming out of the back of the guy's head too much for the publisher? That sucks...it had a nice diagonal going on (wow, that's morbid of me...).

Overall looks nice. I loooooove inks, but pencils have a texture you just can't duplicate. Sometimes I'm a little sad to see the ink after enjoy such good pencils.

You got it in one. Exit wounds are seriously verbotten from Marvel's regular (Marvel Universe )books. But don't forget these things are bought by 5 year olds, & as a father of a soon to be 5 year old little girl (who loves Spiderman) I wouldn't want her reading a comic book containing that kind of imagry.

Plus I prefere what Tom did on the inks to that panel to how I pencilled it. I think the image has more movement to it now.

I didn't realize Underworld had a young target audience. 5 yrs seems rather low to me, either way...unless your dad works in comics.

I don't think that 5 year olds are the target audience, but lets face it, if a 5 year old goes into the local comic book store & asks his Mom/Dad to buy him a comic with Spiderman on the cover (as that particular issue does) he's probably gonna get it.

I think that the official target audience is teens & up,but I still think it was better to edit out the brain spray.

Beautiful work. I´m very tired right now so my brain might be totally out of wack but from looking at this I get a feeling of a classic Neal Adams-esque type of look at the same time as it feels very modern. Very nice indeed.

Is that you in your icon, Staz? LOVE the hair!! XD (And the collection of books...mmmm).

Aaah, it's a spidey issue, then? That makes more sense. I don't think a parent would take a 5 yr old to a comic store anyway, but that may just be my crappy upbringing (I wasn't allowed to go in comic stores AT ALL because I was a girl and that's where creepy guys hung out. At least my parents were partially right--the ones here are fronts for porn. XD)

Too true mate, I have been very lucky to get an inker of Tom's caliber, I feel we are both pulling in the same direction...something which hasn't always happened with some of the other inkers I've worked with.

That is exactly what I was aiming for, so thanks for picking up on that. Some of the other comments I have received on the art for this gig don't see the modernity, & just feel it looks dated...sigh!
Although, I was never much of an Adams fan, for me John Buscema was always where it was at.

Yeah, that's me in the pic...& yes I do have something of a fetish for collecting books (mostly art 'natch).

Comic book stores as a front for porn? Really? You have some strange traditions over there. Here in the UK (yeah, I'm a limey), comic book stores are just that in my experience, & on the whole do seem to be mostly frequented by young kids, rather than Simpsons style comic book guys.

Took a look at your site, some nice stuff on there mate. Particularly the 'Hell's Knot' stuff which seemed somehow edgier than the rest.

Not all comic stores are porn shops (I hope), just some of the ones local to me.

Thanks for checking out the site...though I haven't updated with anything of worth in a looong time (embarassment!). I'm in the middle of midterms right now and they're totally sapping my time. The HK stuff is a project I've had to work on in increments and is meant for a older audience than my other oooold projects. I'm actually working on it again now for a couple of classes, so hopefully that'll get some damn updates!

(And now I will stop babbling in your thread, my friend. PMs or email are probably best!)

Please post more work when you can. We don't have enough comic work here. It's inspiring to see it.

I see Neal Adams, but the hands, the shadowing, then overall feel... dude, that is SOOO Jerry Ordway!!! The unsung workhorse of comics.

That is a huge compliment from me, btw, I love Ordway's work.

And you certainly bring your own thang to the party... I'm not saying that you like EXACTLY like Ordway... not at all. But you and he has similar.... sensativities and solutions... how's that?
